in Education and Deafness Practical Ideas for the Classroom and Community Volume 16, Number 1, September/October 1997 Teachers Want Ways to Improve Self-Esteem
For Students from Minority Groups As the percentage of students from racial and ethnic and cultural minorities increases in school classrooms, more materials have become available to answer teachers' concerns.
by P. Lynn Hayes and Barbara Luetke-Stahlman P. Lynn Hayes, PhD, earned her doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh and is an associate professor in the teacher training program in deaf education at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, KS. Barbara Leutke-Stahlman, PhD, is professor and director of deaf education in the department of hearing and speech at the University of Kansas, Kansas City, KS. A s the percentage of students from racial and ethnic and cultural minorities increases in school classrooms, more materials have become available to answer teachers' concerns.
Teachers of deaf and hard of hearing children who are members of ethnic minorities would like to know how to help these children develop self-esteemat least if the results of a Midwestern survey can be generalized. The survey was sent to 64 teachers in schools and programs in two Midwestern states. In the surveys, teachers were asked to rank the importance of various kinds of knowledge in working with students from ethnic minorities.
Although all factors in the survey were ranked important, knowledge of ways to help minority students develop self-esteem ranked most important, earning a 1.45 on a 1 to 5 scale. In second place, teachers ranked the need for knowledge of ways to involve parents of deaf minority students in the educational process (1.48). Thirdly, they wanted knowledge to be able to assess the speech and language of their minority students (1.68) and knowledge of linguistic diversity (1.69).

Asian American History PROJECT DESCRIPTION America has been called both a melting pot and a tossed salad because of its history of immigration and assimilation. However, not all immigration groups were quickly or easily accepted into the American way of life. Asians were one of the groups that found it hard to come to the United States, and once they had immigrated, found their lives restricted in ways that other immigrant groups did not encounter. In spite of these obstacles, Asian Americans have contributed in many ways to our nation's history and continue to be one of the largest new immigrant groups today. To learn more about the history and culture of these Asian Americans, Scholastic.com presents Asian American Heritage. This online activity introduces different stories and activities to students and reinforces that Asian Americans have diverse cultural backgrounds. This activity celebrates those differences especially during Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in May. Return to top of page LEARNING OBJECTIVES Scholastic's Online Activities are designed to support the teaching of standards-based skills. While participating in the Asian American Heritage project, students will:

This education section accompanies the program SEARCHING FOR ASIAN AMERICA, a 90-minute program that serves up a genuine taste of what it's like to be Asian American in today's ever-changing United States. These pages consist of three learning activities designed for 7th-12th grade social studies and language arts teachers. Each activity offers extensions and online resources. The activities are best used once students have viewed the film or individual program segments. Each activity can be modified, if necessary, to address younger students' learning levels. The activities incorporate the film's specific focus on Asian Americans, while allowing students to venture beyond obvious themes to examine the program's concepts more globally. When reviewing Gary Locke's status as the first Asian American governor, students consider leadership qualities and their relationship to ethnicity. Lela Lee's comic commentary on Asian American and other societal issues gives students an opportunity to address personal, community, or global concerns in a similar fashion. The activity based on the Filipino American doctors has students delve into the challenges that immigrants typically face when coming to the United States.

Asian American Literature: Sources for Research
The web possesses incredible potential as a research tool for students of Asian American Literature. However, it also possesses the potential to mislead and misinform the unwary on just about any topic. The best, most reliable information is that provided by refereed journals and scholarly books. "Refereed" means that other scholars in the field have read the articles and agreed that they are of sufficient quality to be published.
Refereed Journals
Here are four important journals where articles on Asian American literature appear. Amerasia
This Asian American Studies journal has been in publication since 1971, and has a search engine for topics covered in past issues available on their web site (you can also use this site to search the American Indian Culture Journal and Aztlan ).
