The Individual Major
In consultation with a faculty advisor, interested students from any UMass Boston college may design and complete an individual major in Asian American studies with the approval of both the program and the CAS Committee on Majors, Honors, and Special Programs. Typically, one or two students graduate each year with a major in Asian American studies often in conjunction with a second major in a traditional discipline such as sociology. Interested students should contact the program director.
Program Requirements
This CAS-based interdisciplinary program of study requires 9 credits each of lower-level and upper-level course work, including introductory and culminating courses and one comparative course, for a total of 18 credits. Many courses are cross-listed with other departments in CAS; some are also linked to specific CPCS-based competencies. I. The required introductory course is

and the School of Public Health, Department of Community Health Sciences
January 19, 1998 Purpose:
This concurrent degree program leads to a M.A. in Asian American Studies and an M.P.H. in the School of Public Health with a specialization in the Department of Community Health Sciences. It is designed to provide students with an academic interest in Asian American Studies with a professional career path in public health. This program will not involve the development of any additional courses in either Asian American Studies or the School of Public Health. Present faculty and staff resources are adequate to support this new program. A concurrent program enhances the potential of both the School of Public Health and Asian American Studies Center to recruit students who are committed to combining a strong social science and humanist background with a commitment to a professional career in public health. The simultaneous preparation would provide these students with unique grounding and skills that will enhance their learning. Faculty:
Several faculty in the School of Public Health are currently on the Faculty Advisory Council for the Asian American Studies Center. The working relationship between the two departments is well established. Faculty teaching the courses that are offered in the concurrent program are also available to advise the students during the course of study in the School of Public Health as is their current practice.

Asian American Studies in the Big Ten Universities
Introduction
The field of Asian American Studies has rapidly grown from its early beginnings in California in the 1960's. As the field expands, it seeks to include the experiences and voices of Asian Americans from all parts of the country. No longer is the field concentrated by East or West coasts rather, teachers and researchers of Asian American Studies have begun to analyze the "Asian American experience" as it is affected by many different factors, region being one of them. Subsequently, the field has grown in the Midwest. Asian American Studies programs and centers are beginning to find a home in Big Ten Schools, starting with the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1991. Since then, programs have been established at Northwestern, the University of Michigan, the Ohio State University, and the University of Illinois, Urbana- Champaign (UIUC). Acknowledging this growth and the merits of collaboration, faculty, staff, and graduate students involved in Asian American Studies began, at national conferences, to discuss the idea for a Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) meeting for scholars interested in Asian American Studies. This CIC meeting of Asian American Studies faculty, staff, and graduate students was convened by the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign's Asian American Studies program on November 12, 2000 in the hopes of strengthening networks in the field of Asian American Studies among the Big Ten Universities.

The greatest independent Asian American science fiction anthology film ever created . Our experiences at Asian American and science fiction festivals
http://angryasianman.com/extra2004-02-20.html
Filmmaker Greg Pak wants you to see his movie, Robot Stories Robot Stories is currently playing in New York and Washington D.C., and opens March 12 in Los Angeles (with more cities to follow). How's it going? Very well, thank you very much. How was opening weekend in NYC? www.robotstories.net Tell us a little bit about yourself... I'm a thirty-something Korean American hapa haole who grew up in Texas and studied political science at Yale and history at Oxford before going to NYU Grad Film and becoming an independent filmmaker. I have glasses and a beard and these days I'm usually wearing a big red coat. What inspired you to make Robot Stories ? Why robots? If you had to sell this movie to some guy on the street, how would you describe it? Like most independently released films, you're operating on what you've described as a "miserably small distribution budget." What's the key to marketing this film? Could you have done it without the internet? The key to marketing the film was figuring out what our target audiences were and how to get to 'em. The festival circuit was essential for that. I'd always know that two of our big target audiences were twenty and thirty-something Asian Americans and science fiction fans. Our experiences at Asian American and science fiction festivals confirmed that. But we played dozens of other festivals at which general audiences responded incredibly well. As wonderful white-haired ladies kept telling me how much they loved the movie, I began to realize that the film could really click with traditional arthouse cinema goers, which is a typically older and whiter crowd.

August 9, 2002 James Hattori is a correspondent for CNN. The results are in: Asian American females do indeed outnumber males in television news, according to an AAJA study released Thursday morning. In fact, Asian female professionals outnumber males five to one in top U.S. markets. While this may not come as a surprise to many Asian American journalists, it should turn the heads of news directors at TV stations around the country. "Every time we had talked to industry leaders about this issue, they didn't see it as much of a problem," said Mae Cheng, vice president of print and this year's sole presidential candidate. "Now we have evidence."
The findings also reflect a potential ongoing problem because Asian males are not currently enrolling in university journalism and communication programs in significant enough numbers to change the employment trend. In response to the study, AAJA will step up efforts to encourage Asian American male students to enter the broadcast field through programs and scholarships, said Cheng. Among the study's findings: Of the 104 Asian Americans who appear on air in the top 25 markets, only 20 are male.
