ABOUT US AHANA ACTIVITIES SCHOLARSHIPS ... Relationship with Asian Caucus History of Asian Americans Introduced to America as laborers in the early nineteenth century, Asians have played an integral role in the development of our nation. Through hard work and determination, our Asian ancestors established a strong presence as immigrants belying the stereotype that Asian Americans are passive, submissive, and indifferent. In recent years, Asian Americans have gained prominence in all areas of American society as lawyers, teachers, doctors, and workers of all kinds. Despite this progress, the impression remains that Asian Americans are stereotypically not leaders, activists, or strong role models because they continue to live in tight-knit, traditional communities outside the public eye. To counter this impression and highlight the important role of Asian Americans in our history and future, Boston College, with a donation from the Jesuit Community, has established a scholarship fund to celebrate the accomplishments of students who represent the highest ideals and aspirations of the university and the Asian American community. Back to top About the Scholarship Created in 1995 through the initiative of a group of students, faculty, and administrators, the Boston College Asian American Scholarship, a partial tuition scholarship for senior year, annually recognizes juniors whose commitment to academic excellence, to promoting Asian American awareness, and to serving both the Asian American and the wider communities on and off campus, is outstanding.

    Introduction
The Social Sciences Department is an interdisciplinary department offering majors and minors which draw on social scientific methods of inquiry, connected by interdisciplinary courses that investigate subjects from a multiplicity of perspectives, rather than focusing on a single discipline. The department includes the Asian American Studies Program, the Social Science Program and the Women's Studies Program. The undergraduate major draws on the strengths of the three programs and offers a broad, liberal arts education with a focus in the social sciences. Two options within the BA - Social Science prepare future teachers for entrance into elementary (multiple subjects) or secondary (single subject) teaching credential programs in the College of Education by satisfying the requirements of the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. A third option, the topical social sciences major, enables students to specialize in interdisciplinary investigation of particular topics. Students take courses from across the College of Social Sciences. Approved topics include: Asian American Studies, Comparative Studies in Race/Ethnicity, Class and Gender, Public Service and Social Change, and Women's Studies. Special topics may also be arranged. Interested students should consult with the department for handouts specifying required and recommended courses. Students should consult the department for new topical areas under development.

    The Program
The intercollegiate Asian American Studies program offers intellectually challenging, emotionally engaging, and locally grounded opportunities to study the voices, contemporary issues, historical experiences, and contributions of diverse Asian communities in the US. By drawing on shared commitments of faculty, staff, and students from each college within the University, the program provides rich, interdisciplinary approaches in teaching and research with dynamic linkages to local communities and supportive learning environments for students of all backgrounds. The program enables students to develop critical thinking skills, competencies, and sensibilities to understand, contribute to and thrive in a culturally diverse world, with particular attention to urban populations, institutions, and environments. The program strives to integrate culturally-responsive instruction in the classroom with holistic practices of mentoring, community-building, and advocacy to address the social and academic needs of students The program collaborates closely with the University's Institute for Asian American Studies (IAAS) in relation to new course development, ongoing research and service learning opportunities, speakers and special events, publications, and graduate/undergraduate student support.
