Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society Unveils First In-Depth Study of African-American, Asian-American and Latino Donors in New York Region
Study Finds that Donors in these Communities Exhibit High Levels of Giving and that Giving Priorities Vary More Along Generational than Ethnic Lines

A groundbreaking new study has found that charitable giving levels among African-American, Asian-American and Latino donors interviewed in the New York metropolitan region were higher, with an overall average (median) of $5,000, than the national averages for households that give but do not volunteer ($1,620) as well as for households that practice both ($2,295) . In addition, while there were differences in giving across ethnic lines, the most substantial differences were between older and younger generations those born before and after the enactment of the Civil Rights legislation and immigration reforms in the mid-1960s. The study was conducted by the Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society at The Graduate Center of The City University of New York in partnership with the Coalition for New Philanthropy, an initiative to advance philanthropy in communities of color. The study

February 3, 2005 AABANY Annual Banquet Features Dale Minami
We're really excited about the banquet this year, which is scheduled for Thursday, February 3, 2005 at the Waldorf-Astoria. Our speaker will be Dale Minami, who is best known for his civil rights work in the landmark case of Korematsu v. United States, which vindicated Japanese Americans for refusing to obey incarceration orders during WWII, orders originally upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court.

UCLA Asian American Studies Center Launches New Journal on Policies, Practices and Community Research for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders ((For a complimentary review copy of the first issue of AAPI Nexus, please see below.)) A new national journal by UCLA's Asian American Studies Center focuses on policies, practices and community research to benefit the nation's burgeoning Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. It is being launched as part of the Center's year-long celebration of its 35th anniversary. The new journal, AAPI Nexus: Asian American and Pacific Islander Policy, Practice, and Community, draws from professional schools and applied social science scholars as well as practitioners and public policy advocates with the explicit goal of reinvigorating Asian American Studies' traditional mission of serving communities and generating practical research. "The journal seeks to strengthen the bridge between gown and town," said Paul Ong, director of UCLA's Ralph and Goldy Lewis Center for Regional Policy Studies, professor of urban planning, social welfare, and Asian American Studies, and senior editor of the journal. "University research has been a tremendous resource to practitioners, elected officials and community leaders, and those in the community can help inform the university of what the important societal issues for research are. The journal is, as the name implies, the nexus that facilitates communication."

VIOLENCE / ACTIVISM / AGENCY
Southern California Regional Conference for the
Association for Asian American Studies
February 2nd, 2002
Loyola Marymount University DESCRIPTION
Two major historical and political events in Asian American history will intersect in Spring 2002 - the 10th anniversary of "sa-i-gu" (Los Angeles Civil Unrest of 1992), and the 20th anniversary of the murder of Vincent Chin. In many ways, these two events have made lasting impressions on the political and cultural contours of Asian America revealing that interethnic relations are not simply "black and white." The aftermath of both events galvanized Asian American civil rights groups and, as a result, increased coalition-building and political representation on many levels. Out of violence arose activism and agency.
Now in the aftermath of September 11, violence has once again emerged with an even greater urgency for activism and agency. Immediately after the attacks, Arab and South Asian communities were besieged by acts of violence ranging from hate graffiti to murder. Despite efforts from our nation's leaders to deter acts of hatred, the scope and frequency of hate crimes in the post-9/11 terrorist attacks continue unabated.
"What is to be done?" is the underlying question for this conference. Related questions include: What is "activism" and "agency" in these difficult and extraordinary times? What are the lessons and legacies of Vincent Chin and the Los Angeles Civil Unrest in the context of the 9/11 attacks? In what ways does Asian American Studies, a discipline born out of politics, have a responsibility to address these pressing issues? What is the role of the community and the academy in these turbulent times?
