MSFC Update - January 2001 Regional Conference Reports In the fall of 2000, over 180 students from medical schools across the United States and Canada participated in MSFC Regional Conferences. Each conference provided students with opportunities to discuss critical reproductive health topics and network with students, residents, physicians and pro-choice organizations in their area. Southeastern Regional Conference CHARLESTON, SC. OCTOBER 7, 2000 This conference, which was held at the Medical University of South Carolina, was small and intimate. Several members from Emory University, who trekked down from Atlanta, joined students from MUSC. Workshops during the day included a talk on emergency contraception and a seminar entitled "Developing Your Personal Ethic Regarding Abortion." A counselor from Charleston's sole abortion clinic spoke about patient counseling and a speaker from Georgia NARAL discussed local races and provided information about so-called "Crisis Pregnancy Centers." The conference organizer, Tanya Kowalczyk, commented, "Even though our group was small, we all walked away feeling energized and connected, having learned a great deal about a variety of topics, about ourselves and about each other. We are all looking forward to sharing our newly acquired knowledge with our group members."

    http://www.aapaonline.org/dow/dowstart.htm
How to Start a DoW Near You As DoW continues to expand, several DoW members have requested ideas and suggestions on how to start a DoW regional group that meets regularly. Here are some steps to get a regional meeting together:
  • Have at least one contact person, a regional coordinator to get the group going. This person will be putting together the first meeting by gathering other Asian American professionals in the region of need and interest. (Two contact people are even better, since it is often fun to work with a collaborator!) Gather a list of individuals, their phone numbers, emails, addresses, etc. of people you may know or would like to get together. Contact them by any of the above methods to let them know that you would like to get a DoW regional meeting started and ask whether they would be interested in attending. Also, contact Phi Loan Le, ple3@csulb.edu our DoW membership coordinator and treasurer to give you a list of members, their information in your region as well as information on reimbursement. For individuals interested in attending, inquire about some available time blocks and convenient locations for possible meeting times.
