New York City encompasses 300 square miles and is the home to over 7 million people, representing people from almost every country in the world. It is divided into five very distinct boroughs that have completely different personalities. These are: Manhattan, which is right in the center; The Bronx, which lies north/northeast; Queens in the east and southeast; Brooklyn in the south/southeast; and Staten Island to the south. Each borough is headed by an elected borough president. New Yorkers do not describe themselves as just New Yorkers. Most are fiercely loyal to the borough and neighborhood in which they live and describe themselves as "from the Bronx" or "South Brooklyn" or "I'm a Manhattanite or "an Upper Eastsider," etc. In fact, I've met people who have lived in New York City their whole lives, yet have never been to Manhattan - and they're proud of it!

Cancer Prevention in Diverse Populations: Cultural Implications for the Multidisciplinary Team
Buy Book Preface The first edition of this book was based on a series of federally funded grants for ethnically and culturally diverse nurses. These grants would not have been possible without the assistance of Barnie Lepovetsky, PhD, JD, of the National Cancer Institute (NCI). In the early 1980s, Dr. Lepovetsky met with several nurses in leadership positions in the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) and urged them to write a training grant to promote the education of minority nurses on cancer prevention and detection. As the result of Dr. Lepovetsky's support, Marilyn Frank-Stromborg, EdD, JD, FAAN, Judi Johnson, RN, PhD, and Ruth McCorkle, RN, PhD, wrote a relatively small grant proposal for a one-day workshop on cancer prevention for 30 African American nurses, to be held the day before the start of the 1985 ONS Annual Congress in Houston, TX. At the time, few African American nurses traditionally attended the annual ONS Congresses, so the investigators were apprehensive about whether enough nurses would apply to fill this small workshop. The tremendous response to the call for applications-more than 500 African American nurses applied-quickly dispelled any doubts. The investigators were impressed with these nurses' commitment to improving the health of people of color and with their involvement in community activities. In unsolicited comments, the applicants poignantly documented the need for cancer prevention/screening programs in their communities. They also recognized their need for greater knowledge and skills in conducting cancer prevention activities.

How is Gestational Diabetes Found? How is Gestational Diabetes Treated? What Can Happen to Me and Myy Baby if My Blood Sugar Levels Aren't Under Control? ... Where Can I Get Help to Control My Blood Sugar Levels? What is Gestational Diabetes? Gestational Diabetes (also known as GDM) is a type of diabetes that develops during pregnancy. For most women, it begins during the second trimester. Approximately 7% to 14% of all pregnant women develop gestational diabetes. This percentage is higher among certain ethnic groups such as African American, Asian American, East Indian, Latina/Hispanic and Native American. The difference between this type of diabetes and the type that exists before pregnancy is that gestational diabetes is not likely to cause birth defects. In gestational diabetes, high blood sugar usually occurs after the first 8 weeks of pregnancy. It is high blood sugars in early pregnancy that most likely cause birth defects. If you have gestational diabetes, your blood sugar is elevated because of the foods that you eat and pregnancy hormones. Normally, the body changes food into a sugar called glucose. Insulin, which is a hormone that the body produces, helps to turn glucose into energy. With diabetes, either the body does not make enough insulin or it is not able to use insulin appropriately. As a result, the blood sugar goes up too high.

It must have an enduring form that will preserve the memory of the dead but at the same time it must occasion an experience an emotional, cognitive, and social process that enables the living to bear their loss. It must address the loss of intimates that is deeply personal and individual and, at the same time, the loss of common humanity that is profoundly general and shared. It must evoke the particular events and acts arrested in time but translate them into thoughts and questions for a continuous conversation with generations that follow. What interpretive and analytical strategies permit designers to gain the perspective and vision that embraces these contrasting demands?

INFORMATION
ABOUT AFRICAN AMERICAN, ASIAN AMERICAN, COMPARATIVE ETHNIC, AND LATINA/O STUDIES What is African American studies? [Please check this link, www.columbia.edu/iraas.] What is comparative ethnic studies? Comparative ethnic studies is primarily a multidisciplinary and systematic study of racializations, but also their intersections and divergences with ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, and nation. It draws from disciplines but it has also advanced knowledge and pushed borders as an interdiscipline and as a view from the margins, and it is particularly attentive to the questions of representations, social hierarchies, inequalities, and the movements of peoples, ideas, and capital across national boundaries. In essence, comparative ethnic studies focuses upon the locations and articulations of power as expressed in social formations. What is Latina/o studies?
Latina/o studies surveys and studies the history, culture, and social fabric of the Latina/o populations of the United States. Courses in the program offer students an interdisciplinary perspective on the various Latina/o communities in the country. The curriculum includes courses placing the Latina/o experience in the context of U.S., Caribbean, and Latin American history, discussing the key socioeconomic and political issues facing Latina/os in the U.S., and presenting Latina/o expressions in literature, music, and art. What is Asian American studies?
