Departments FAQ ... Site Map Disaster Relief for Indian Ocean Tsunami Victims
December 30, 2004 On December 26th, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake created a gargantuan tsunami that caused unimaginable death and destruction to the shores of 11 nations in South Asia. The death toll may exceed 100,000 and could be the costliest natural disaster in history. Relief is desperately needed in these nations, and Austinites can help by providing monetary donations. Donations
Monetary contributions to established international relief agencies are always the most useful response to disasters and are considerably more beneficial than the donation of commodities. Cash donations provide faster and better response to the victims because:
  • Professional relief organizations can purchase exactly what is most urgently needed by disaster victims.
  • Unlike in-kind donations, cash donations entail no transportation cost.
  • Relief supplies can be purchased at locations as near to the disaster site as possible, reducing transport and storage costs.
  • Supplies, particularly food, can almost always be purchased locally - even in famine situations.

Local cultural event to celebrate Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month
For immediate release
May 7, 2004
On Friday, May 14, 2004, City of Austin employees will celebrate Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month at a cultural celebration with food and entertainment representing various Asian nations. The event will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lester Palmer Events Center, 900 Barton Springs Road. Gordon Quan, Council Member from the City of Houston, will be the keynote speaker. This local event, hosted by the City of Austin Asian American Employee Network (AAEN), is part of a national month-long cultural celebration. May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States in 1843. For the fifth year in a row, AAEN volunteers have raised funds to host this annual luncheon for their fellow City employees as a way to share their Asian culture. The Austin festivities will have a variety of entertainment including: traditional Chinese dance, Korean drum and dance, Filipino songs, Chinese folk songs a cappella, demonstration of Tai-Chi, a cultural fashion show, as well as a slideshow of photos from various Asian countries. There will be an Asian food tasting, but quantities will be limited. Foods will include:

National Asian American organizations are outraged over proposed legislation that would cut access to welfare benefits for virtually all legal immigrants and residents. The bill, House Resolution 3500, comes in the wake of President Bill Clinton's call for an overhaul of the welfare system.
"This attack on legal immigrants is unprecedented in its callousness," said Karen Narasaki of the Japanese "American Citizens' League." It attacks children and the elderly, and is so inhumane it seeks to cut off emergency food and housing. How does it serve our nation's interest to create a class of sick, hungry and illiterate children and homeless, starving elderly?" The bill, also called the "Responsibility and Empowerment support Program Providing

Wake-up call : Anti-immigrant sentiments have spurred many Asian Americans to get more involved in the civil rights movement, says OCA head Daphne Kwok. Last fall, she spoke with civil rights pioneer Fred Korematsu at a student conference at Smith College. Photo courtesy of OCA By Alethea Yip Daphne Kwok remembers growing up in a Virginia suburb where she and her brothers were among few minorities in school. "I thought it was time to start an Asian American organization, but there weren’t enough Asian Americans at the school. So then I said OK, we’ll start an international club." It wasn’t until college, at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, that she became aware of the Asian American movement and what it meant to be an Asian American. Today, she wants to build that awareness among as many Asian Americans as she can reach. As executive director of the Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA), Kwok oversees one of Asian America’s leading civil rights groups. Founded in 1973, OCA has 40 chapters in 25 states and maintains a national office in Washington, D.C., where Kwok is based. Despite several important victories over the last decade, Kwok, who is 34 and has headed OCA for the last six years, believes the biggest challenges for the organization lie ahead. The main issues include the debate over immigration reform and over affirmative action. But in these crises in U.S. policy, Kwok sees an opportunity.

Brandeis Asian American Students Association has a rich 27-year history of activism, cultural expression and social activities on campus. It draws its support and ideas from its diverse Asian-American and non-Asian membership. Recently, BAASA has become more involved with planning inter-club activities such as the annual Asian Awareness Week, interracial forums and various panel discussions. A Historical Overview "Two years before the founding of the Asian American organization, black students had occupied Ford Hall with a set of demands regarding admissions policies and a black studies department. In 1970, in the wake of the American invasion of Cambodia, the students at Brandeis went on strike...Asian American had been involved in both cases to a greater or lesser degree...But they began to see that something was strange about their involvement, about shouting "Bring the boys home" during antiwar demonstrations, and supporting, like many white students did, third world struggles on campus. They began to see that the Vietnam War was killing Asian people and that all kinds of excuses and comments were being made about how Asian people did not respect human life; that their deaths and degradation did not matter. As Asian American students, they saw that it was not enough to raise the cry about American soldiers being killed; they understood what the killing of Asian people in Vietnam meant to them...

http://www.students.emory.edu/SAAAC/history.html
History of SAAAC The following is written by Stephen Chen, SAAAC's "Godfather". Stephen was one of the founders of SAAAC. Here's a little bit of old school SAAAC history (damn, I can't believe it's been about 10 years since we started this party): Executive summary: Growing from a desire to increase cooperation and communication among the existing Asian American student organizations and to establish a dedicated body to advocate for and to address issues facing the Asian Pacific American community, a diverse group of Asian Americans came together to form Students in Alliance for Asian American Concerns in the Spring of 1993. SAAAC's additional purposes were to support and to encourage greater collaboration among the existing APA student organizations and to draw attention to Asian Pacific American politics, issues, and even culture (separate and apart from Asian cultural celebrations). The coalition that SAAAC represents is an embodiment of the vision and desire to explore and to find the common bonds among different ethnic-Asian Pacific Americans and to increase power and social capital through collaboration. The (more detailed and more personal) origins: From my first year at Emory, I felt that there was a need for a more inclusive Asian Pacific American group. As a Taiwanese American Freshman (back in 1991), I didn't feel like I had a community that was truly my own: at the time, Emory only had KSA, ECSA, and ICE, and the APA community was closer to 3% of the student population. Without an ethnic-specific organization to call home, I ended up joining all three APA groups that existed. As a member (and later, officer) of these organizations, I was surprised at the lack of communication among them - often events or meetings were scheduled at the same time, making it impossible to support every group and unintentionally creating competition among the groups.
