INTRODUCTION
This research guide focuses on the sources you may find useful in researching issues in Ethnic Studies. This guide is not a comprehensive list of research materials, but it will give you an overview of the sources you should consider as you plan your research, as well as some starting places for different materials. Planning an effective research strategy will be essential to the success of your paper since many of the familiar legal research tools, such as annotated codes, legal encyclopedias and West key numbers will not provide access to the best research materials for these issues. Your research will be highly interdisciplinary in nature and may lead you to materials in social sciences, economics, sociology, history and public policy, as well as law. Empirical data, such as income, population and/or immigration statistics may be relevant to your research and analysis. The web sites listed in this guide under "Journal Abstracts and Indexes"

Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
May 2005
Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week was originally observed in 1978 during the first ten days of May. These days were chosen to coincide with two important anniversaries: the arrival in the United States of the first Japanese immigrants on May 7, 1843, and the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. In 1992, Congress expanded the observance from ten days to the month-long celebration that we know today as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.* Skokie Public Library has hundreds of books and encyclopedia articles about the people, history, and cultures of Asia and the Pacific Islands. The Internet is also a great place to find information written by and about people of Asian and Pacific American heritage. Follow the links below to start learning about Asian and Pacific American people, cultures, and experiences in the homelands and in America! * United States Census Bureau, "

Young Historians Are Reshaping Asian American Studies

serious academic interest in their history is a relatively recent phenomenon. The first generations of professional American historians either ignored them or demeaned them. After Asians were almost totally barred from immigrating to the United States in 1924, successor academic generations began to pay more attention, but they treated Asian Americans as victims of mob violence, unjust federal immigration statutes, and state laws and municipal ordinances limiting such choices as occupation and residence. Only recently have historians begun to see Asian Americans as subjects, rather than objects, of history.
The evolution of Asian American history has been not unlike the patterns in subdisciplines such as African American and women's history, but it has been slower at least in part because so few Asian Americans participated in the discipline until well after World War II.

The Co-optation of Asian American Feminism
    By Sonia Shah
In recent years, mass media outlets have described the current state of gender relations as "post-feminist." In this post-feminist era, they say, feminist goals have become largely irrelevant and sexism as a social and political problem has been, for the most part, solved. Via the co-optation, commercialization, and ultimately, the subversion of feminist goals, mainstream commentators have successfully re-defined gender relations as something other than they are without widespread disbelief. Given the facts that patriarchy the cultural and institutional systems that privilege men over women still exists, and feminist activists around the country are still working to subvert patriarchy, the hailing of a "post-feminist" society is premature at best. Experience and studies show that women are poorer than men, earn less money than men, are beaten and raped by men, are harassed by men, and are demeaned and devalued by society. What the "post-feminist" era refers to is not a revolution in actual gender power relations, but rather a revolution in the representation of gender power relations. In the world created by advertising, fashion, news media, and the entertainment industry with notable exceptions women’s power is either equal to men’s, or if unequal, unequal in a way that is acceptable (annoying at worst) to women. In this media-created world, it’s easy for single women to raise children and hold down high powered jobs; working class battered women are funny and own big houses; women of color are rich and fashionable.

Reflective Essay #2: Who Am I?
Caught in the Middle: Who Am I?
This is a letter I wrote to my friend, "Kim" (a pseudonym) who is of "mixed race." She wrote me an e-mail letter earlier, and this was my response to it. Italics indicate parts of her letter that I included in my reply. I did not alter the text, though I edited it for the purpose of this paper. I feel that this is a good place to start my essay: Starting with my ethnic identity, and then discussing my gender and sexual identities.
    Dear Kim-
I certainly consider myself more Korean than German or Italianbut always American. Growing up being mixed was hard. I felt many feelings that you did/do about being Asian, although I never avoided Asians.
If you ever asked me, I'd say you're more Korean. I mean, "Korean-American." I tell people sometimes (half-jokingly) that you're the only Korean friend that I have. Which is sort of true, therefore sad at the same time: I never did have too many Korean friends. They always thought I was too weird or a reject. Even those Korean people that I talk to and sometimes hang out with, they're mostly all from our Korean church, and that's a weird relationship right there. ...
