October 1950 Background: World War II Numbers Served and Their Jobs Unlike in World War II when there was the Japanese-American 442d RCT, there were no separate Asian-American units during the Korean War. The Department of the Army dropped the designation "Asian-American" after World War II, so even an approximate number for the Korean War has not been determined. But the National Japanese-American Historical Society has estimated that 5,000 Nisei served in Korea with American forces and concluded that 213 of them lost their lives. Several units did remain predominantly Asian-American like the 100th Battalion, 442d Infantry, U.S. Army Reserve and the 5th Regimental Combat Team, both from Hawaii. Nisei in the Military Intelligence Service When the Korean War began, many Nisei were among the first American troops sent to the peninsula. The United States lacked Korean translators, and because Japanese was the language mandated during Japan's colonial domination of Korea (191045), Nisei soldiers were able to provide valuable linguistic support. During the Korean War, Nisei in the Military Intelligence Service served as interpreters, interrogators and translators and provided other linguistic support. During the Korean conflict, there were more Nisei in higher enlisted ranks, in company grade and in field grade ranks than had been the case during World War II.

21 Asian American World War II Vets to Get Medal of Honor
By Rudi Williams
American Force Press Service WASHINGTON, May 19, 2000 Twenty-one Asian American World War II heroes are scheduled to have their wartime Distinguished Service Crosses upgraded to Medals of Honor during White House ceremonies on June 21. Seven of the 21 recipients are still living. They are: Rudolph B. Davila of Vista, Calif.; Barney F. Hajiro of Waipahu, Hawaii; Shizuya Hayashi of Pearl City, Hawaii; U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye of Honolulu, Hawaii; Yeiki Kobashigawa of Hawaii (city not available); Yukio Okutsu of Hilo, Hawaii; and George T. Sakato of Denver. The Distinguished Service Cross was conferred on 11 of the heroes posthumously. The remaining three have died since the war. President Clinton approved the Army's recommendations for the upgrades on May 12. Nineteen of the 21 veterans were members of the all-Japanese 100th Infantry Battalion or 442nd Regimental Combat Team for their size, among the most highly decorated units in U.S. military history. The 100th, comprised mostly of Japanese American National Guardsmen from Hawaii, was the first all-Japanese American combat unit. While the 442nd was being formed in 1943, the 100th Battalion was already fighting in Italy. The 100th merged into the 442nd in 1944 and became the regiment's first battalion though it retained its unit designation.

Have you wondered how Taiwanese Americans fit into Asian American history? How are Taiwanese Americans unique to other Asian groups? Dr. Yang will take you through a comparative history of Taiwanese Americans and Asian Americans, alluding to challenges, stereotypes, and victories that you may have already experienced without knowing it.
H ello everyone! Welcome to the workshop. My name is Bruce Yang. The objective of this workshop is to discuss the role of Taiwanese American in Asian American history. Have you wondered how Taiwanese Americans fit into Asian American history? How are Taiwanese Americans unique to other Asian groups? Like most Asian immigrants, Taiwanese immigrants came to this country for the land of freedom and pursue of endless opportunities. Like most Asian Americans, Taiwanese Americans in this country also have to face the American culture of racial stereotyping, institutional discrimination, and deep seeded anti-Asian sentiment. Despite these challenges, like most Asian Americans, Taiwanese Americans have excelled and succeeded in various professions and different fields. But unlike most other Asian Americans, Taiwanese Americans constantly have to face a marginalization of our Taiwanese American identity. For example, a typical conversation goes like this:

ASIAN AMERICAN LITERATURE: A BRIEF INTRODUCTION AND SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHY
Amy Ling
ASIAN American literature is the newest and the smallest branch of American literature because Asian Americans, compared to the other racial minorities in the United States, are relative newcomers. The Chinese, the Asian group longest in America, first arrived in sizable numbers in the mid 1840s, while the Vietnamese are among the most recent immigrants. Nonetheless, Asian Americans have produced literature here, both works in Asian languages, which are accessible to few, and works in English, which have generally been ignored and forgotten. Partly on the coattails of the black nationalist movement and partly as a reaction to the Vietnam War, the third war in Asia in three decades, literary scholars of Asian descent became sufficiently aroused and curious enough to unearth the legacy of their past. In 1972 Kai-yu Hsu, a distinguished scholar of Chinese literature, and Helen Palubinskas published a slim anthology, Asian American Authors , the first collection of its kind, which brought to light two generations of American writers from three Asian traditions. In 1974 two additional anthologies appeared:
