We have been exceptionally busy this past month planning and preparing for our Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection certification and our 3M Baseline Maintenance assessment. I was very pleased with our Force Protection Training Team and their untiring efforts to train and evaluate three separate duty sections in responding to a myriad of anti-terrorism exercises designed to test SAN JACINTO's defenses while in port or at anchor. I was equally pleased at how the Chief Petty Officer's Mess rallied the crew together to "ace" the 3M assessment. Their efforts clearly set the bar just a little bit higher for our next milestone. Both successes freed up valuable time in our schedule that will be filled with additional training opportunities prior to our deployment.

In 1992, Congress expanded the 10-day observance to a month-long celebration. Updated 7 days 20 hours 1 minutes ago. Other descriptions of Asian American An Asian American can be generally defined as a person of Asian ancestry or origin who was born in or is an immigrant to the United States The term Asian in a geographical sense simply refers to something or someone from Asia. ... The term "Asian American" is credited to the historian Yuji Ichioka who, in the late , used it to describe members of a new pan-ethnic radical political identity who shared common histories, experiences, and goals. In the United States, this term has widely supplanted the term " oriental " which was popularly used before the to describe East Asian peoples regardless of nationality, upbringing, or origin. Some have argued "oriental" is politically loaded and referenced a colonial "other" (see

Photo Caption: Intelligence personnel of the 2d Infantry Division question a captured Korean guerilla. October 1950 Background: World War II Substantial numbers of Asian-Americans served in America's armed forces during World War II, but the total number is unknown. Some 25,000 Japanese-Americans had proved their loyalty in uniform. More than 6,000 Nisei (first-generation, American-born Japanese) trained as interpreters and translators at the Army's Military Intelligence Service (MIS) Language School in Minnesota and 3,700 MIS linguists served in combat. The U.S. Army's 442d Regimental Combat Team (RCT), comprised of about 4,500 Japanese-Americans, fought heroically in Italy and Central Europe. The unit received more than 18,000 individual decorations and seven Presidential Unit Citations. More than 20,000 Chinese Americans served in the armed forces, many as integrated members of Army units. Smaller numbers of Filipino-Americans and Korean-Americans formed small units for the nation's war effort. Numbers Served and Their Jobs Unlike in World War II when there was the Japanese-American 442d RCT, there were no separate Asian-American units during the Korean War. The Department of the Army dropped the designation "Asian-American" after World War II, so even an approximate number for the Korean War has not been determined. But the National Japanese-American Historical Society has estimated that 5,000 Nisei served in Korea with American forces and concluded that 213 of them lost their lives. Several units did remain predominantly Asian-American like the 100th Battalion, 442d Infantry, U.S. Army Reserve and the 5th Regimental Combat Team, both from Hawaii.

Going-over-to-the-other-side Syndrome could be the latest affliction plaguing high-ranking American military officials. With offices in New York, BNP Paribas is the most profitable bank in the Euro zone, with a significant and growing presence in the United States and leading positions in Asia. General Shinseki, last in the news for his controversial insistence that a postwar Iraq might require many more forces than the 100,000 American troops and the tens of thousands of allied forces necessary for a reconstruction effort, is a former commander of the peacekeeping operation in Bosnia. In the arena of war, it is crucial to know who the enemy is. We can only trust that when top military officials leave the arena to work for friends of the enemy, they remember the old adage of loose lips sinking ships. Nor is Shinseki the only top military gun to go over to the other side.

Government officials feared that Americans of Japanese descent living on the West Coast might cooperate in an invasion of the United States by Japan. Accordingly, more than 100,000 of these residents were forced into relocation camps inland, most losing their homes, businesses, and other property in the process. About two-thirds of those moved were United States citizens. ( See Nisei

Japanese-american Relocation The relocation of Japanese-Americans into internment camps during World War II was one of the most flagrant violations of civil liberties in American history. According to the census of 1940, 127,000 persons of Japanese ancestry lived in the United States, the majority on the West Coast. One-third had been born in Japan, and in some states could not own land, be naturalized as citizens, or vote. After Japan bombed Pearl Harbor in December 1941, rumors spread, fueled by race prejudice, of a plot among Japanese-Americans to sabotage the war effort. In early 1942, the Roosevelt administration was pressured to remove persons of Japanese ancestry from the West Coast by farmers seeking to eliminate Japanese competition, a public fearing sabotage, politicians hoping to gain by standing against an unpopular group, and military authorities.

    Racial Slur Stirs Debate
    By Frank Wu
As Asian Americans nationwide expressed their outrage, though, it became apparent that there might be negative political consequences from alienating a significant voting bloc in the crucial state of California. Only then did a McCain spokesperson pledge that the candidate would retire the word from his vocabulary. From Pearl Harbor to Saigon: Japanese American Soldiers and the Vietnam War , Asian American military veterans recall being told to stand up in basic training to show an example of what the enemy looks like. Consequently, when these grunts were out of uniform, they were at risk of being shot by their own side out of mistaken assumptions. Similar sentiments motivate hate crimes. When two white brothers killed Jim Loo, a North Carolina resident, they identified him as Vietnamese and blamed him for the consequences of the Vietnam War. The McCain episode demonstrated, however, that Asian Americans will stand up and speak out for themselves and for what is right. In doing so, Asian Americans engaged in a lively debate amongst themselves, especially Asian American media professionals, about whether this was the right fight or just oversensitivity. More heartening still, when Asian Americans expressed their viewpoints, the general public took notice.
