Flower Drum Song , the anticipated revival of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic with a reworked book by David Henry Hwang, canceled its production at Los Angeles' Ahmanson Theatre due to lack of funding, according to the theatre's artistic director-producer Gordon Davidson.
Davison cited the demands of producing an entirely new musical, as opposed to the touring productions the Ahmanson usually books, required far more money than the theatre had at hand.
"It's always painful to lose a production," said Hwang, who had received permission for the 21st Century adaption from C. Y. Lee, author of the book that Rodgers and Hammerstein used for their 1958 show. "But I'm still optimistic about the future of the show."
But what kind of future does this revamped Flower Drum Song have? Theatre insiders have pointed out that the Ahmanson's production of Flower Drum Song was, by their admission, unusual. That break in production style meant the theatre was counting on some heavy hitters to bankroll the show for an eventual Broadway debut. However, the Broadway establishment reportedly had jitters over the nature of the revised show production, perhaps feeling that, unlike Miss Saigon , an all Asian production like Flower Drum Song did not have commercial potential.

Loyola’s Asian American Film Festival Features Loss, Triumph CHICAGO (April 20, 2001) Opening night for the Eighth Annual Chicago Asian American Film Festival at Loyola University Chicago on April 21 will feature the premiere of The Chinatown Files , a documentary on the racial profiling of Chinese Americans under 1950’s McCarthyism and the history of U.S.-China relations from World War II through the Cold War. Amy Chen, the film’s director, will present the screening of the film and will lead a question-and-answer session following its showing, said Dr. Yvonne Lau, director of Loyola’s Asian and Asian American Studies program. Overall, 26 films will be shown over five nights this and next month reflecting themes of loss, resistance to political oppression, intergenerational conflicts, homeland identity, stereotypes and much more. “We’re delighted to be able to highlight a continuum of works, celebrating new independent cinema and reflecting the Asian American media arts movement. Following our festival tradition, we have invited at least one director for each screening to discuss the films and comment on the current state of Asian American cinema,” Lau said.
