Poll: minority groups favor ethnic media
From: Associated Press
June 7, 2005
LOS ANGELES (AP) Nearly half the country's Hispanics, Asian Americans, and other minorities prefer ethnic newspapers, television, and radio to mainstream media, according to a poll released Tuesday.
Outlets from Korean-language dailies to Spanish-broadcasting powerhouse Univision Communications Inc. attract 45 percent of adults in major minority groups, or about 29 million people nationwide, at least several times a week over their mainstream counterparts, a poll commissioned by the nonprofit New California Media shows.
Overall, ethnic media reach approximately 80 percent the groups studied — about 51 million people, or a quarter of the U.S. adult population.
“This is something that is growing like a giant hidden in plain sight,” said Sandy Close, executive director for NCM, a nationwide association of more than 700 ethnic media groups.
Many turn to foreign-language newspapers and broadcasts because English isn't their native language. Additionally, minority media often do a better job covering news from the homeland and other issues the community cares about.
“We have a multicultural society with multimedia choices, so people pay attention to media that pay attention to them. That's the bottom line,” said Felix Gutierrez, professor of journalism at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California.

Eager to test out these myths of Asian American media depictions, we rented some current popular American movies with Asian American male and female actors.
    http://mahdzan.com/fairy/papers/asian/asian02.htm
Paper Outline The Typical Asian American Male The Typical Asian American Female
    Method of analyzing
This research paper plans to analyze the stereotypical characters of Asian American men and women in popular movies as well as their appearance in daily television broadcast. Depictions of Asian Americans in the movies have not changed much over the years. The appearance of the evil-scheming Fu Manchu in movies like The Mysterious Dr. Fu Manchu from the early 1900s portrayed the Asian man as cold and ruthless, "all brain but no heart" (Cao). We are still able to find this negative Asian male character in some action-packed movies such as Fury of the Dragon (1976) and The Year of the Dragon (1985). Despite the fact that Asian Americans have lived and flourished in the United States over the past century, Asian Americans are commonly portrayed as newly arrived immigrants who speak fortune cookie (broken) English and cannot assimilate with other members of the American society. Other negative depictions include greedy Asian bandits out to destroy white civilization and defy its man-made laws, and Asian women who are weak, passive and allow themselves to be sexually and emotionally abused by men. Eager to test out these myths of Asian American media depictions, we rented some current popular American movies with Asian American male and female actors. We also observed several hours of television each day for Asian American appearances and to see how they appear on these broadcasts. To make our analysis easier to digest, we have divided our observations according to the stereotypical Asian American male and female categories.

Finding News - And Audience - in the Ethnic Niche
Posted Jan 9, 2003 By Venise Wagner For all their efforts in improving coverage of ethnic communities, May Shen thinks mainstream news media is still doing a poor job. The problem? Mainstream papers think mainstream. May Shen As an example, Shen, advertising sales rep for the Chinese-language daily World Journal, points to the San Jose Mercury News – known for it extended coverage of Asian and Latino communities in the region, including two supplements in Vietnamese, Viet Mercury and Spanish, Nuevo Mundo. "The Mercury is starting to have Asian reporters," says Shen of the main English-language paper. "But the editor and managing editor still have a mainstream perspective." Ethnic Media More Credible? Many ethnic Californians agree with Shen. According to a survey commissioned by New California Media, ethnic media audiences give ethnic media higher marks for accuracy and credibility than mainstream audiences give their media. And Shen explains, part of that is because ethnic communities know the reporters of ethnic papers will at the very least look at an issue from their perspective.

    A Better Future for Maya
Steven Chin received the 2004 Catalyst Award for New Media at the NAMME Awards Banquet on April 22, 2004 in Washington, D.C. The following are his remarks. Thank you, NAMME, for hosting this fabulous banquet and for creating this special night for diversity for the news industry. We certainly don’t have enough of these events promoting diversity. Thanks to the members of my Web team who stuck with me through my start-up companies during the always thrilling, and sometimes tragic roller coast ride that was the Internet boom, especially the exceptionally talented Web designer Rick Elizaga, whose clean and elegant interfaces continue to amaze me even after building nearly a couple dozen sites together. And, special thanks to my wife and daughter for their support and for tolerating my long hours and high drama during those times. And finally I want to acknowledge the Maynard Institute, which gave me my start in journalism. I’m very fortunate to work for an organization so deeply committed to improving the quality of journalism through diversity. When your life’s work aligns with the mission of the organization you work for, it doesn’t get much better than that. Summer Program for Minority Journalists The Maynard Institute has been in the business of diversity for more than 25 years now and I have been associated with the Institute for 16 of those years, beginning with SPMJ - the Summer Program for Minority Journalists, the original journalism boot camp for minority journalists.

From Charlie Chan to Chan is Missing : A Review of Asian America Through the Lens by Jun Xing When I first picked up Jun Xing's book, my initial response was, "Oh great, another Ph.D. dissertation published into a book, another publisher inflicting some former graduate student's private passion upon an unsuspecting public." I did not expect to read anything that would actually inspire me to rent films either made by Asian Americans or dealing with Asian American issues. An encyclopedic summary was my anticipation: summary of what the currently hip theorists think about cinema and its relation to history and identity, and summary of Asian American representations thrown in for the niche market. How relieved I was to read in the introduction that Xing was addressing both cultural and film studies students and the public at large. He states three objectives: 1) "to introduce to a wider public, or broaden the exposure of, the growing ranks of Asian American films"; 2) "to offer an alternative approach to the 'positive image' dilemma confronting Asian Americans as viewed by and considered in the media"; and 3) "to measure [Asian American cultural productions] closely against the historical and cultural contexts under which those productions were made." By having these objectives as a guide, Xing's book successfully addresses a public that rents and views movies, the community of artists making films now, and the critics whose job it is to evaluate the Asian American cinema tradition and Asian American films.

From the "On The Scene" Archives: Asia-palooza: Asian American Fest Opens in NY by Augusta Palmer The 21st Asian American International Film Festival AAIFF ) opens at Manhattan's Florence Gould Hall on tomorrow with the presentation of the first-ever Asian American Media Award for Lifetime Achievement to Ismail Merchant, producer, director, and half of the famed Merchant Ivory filmmaking franchise. After a screening of Merchant's 1994 film " In Custody ," the festival proper starts off with a bang: the adrenaline-pumping Hong Kong action film " The Blacksheep Affair ," directed by Ching Siu-Tung (of " A Chinese Ghost Story " and " Heroic Trio " fame). This year's festival, presented as always by Asian Cinevision (ACV), continues through August 1st in Manhattan with a cavalcade of films from the U.S., Canada, India, China, South Korea, Hong Kong and the Philippines; then it's on to the Brooklyn Heights Cinema for a celebration of "New Asian American Independent Cinema" which spans the weekend of August 7th-9th; and, lastly, on August 22nd and 23rd, there will be "A Tribute to Filipino Cinema" at the New Center Cinema in Sunnyside, Queens. Festival Director Vivian Huang sat down with indieWIRE during the steamy, hectic days leading up to the festival to talk about about some of the high points of this year's offerings and Asian CineVision's twenty-two year history.
