Orientalism, Asian American Identity, and the Popular Media During the course of the 20 th Century, Orientalism also began to play out in the development of a new technological phenomenon: the motion picture. Throughout the 1900s, Orientalism took a place in motion pictures, providing Hollywood with a vast pool of characterizations, stereotypes, and concepts to draw from. Visual stereotypes of Asians on film get their roots from print. Comic books, in particular, provided a bounty of images and physical characterizations to help readers understand the authors were dealing with a recognizable "other." Asians were portrayed quoting ancestral wisdom or charms/fortune, with buckteeth, slant eyes, giant ears, a bald head, blank/dumb face, and typical Chinese clothing. "Terry and the Pirates" and "Flash Gordon" are pointed to as perhaps the quintessential examples of Orientalism in print. As Sheng-Mei Ma writes, these comic strips "included a supporting cast of "Orientals" in opposition to the American heroes to create tales of adventure." Hero Flash Gordon, according to Ma, mirrored the sort of frustrations Americans experienced during the Depression: an overheated economy, fear of too rapid industrialization, and "phobia of the 'yellow peril.'"

"A sian American Media in the Last Decade"
    by Daryl Chin [ October 11, 2002 ]
[Photo by Ana Lai] Daryl Chin's lecture attracted many students despite the poor weather. Originally, the main focus of the lecture would be on Asian-American Media in the Last Decade, but after careful reconsideration, it was pushed back to 1987, the year the Asian American International Film Festival celebrated its 10 th anniversary. Deemed the Asian American version of Brats, it was a year when many young generation filmmakers and video artists straight out of film school came into public prominence, a succession of both media literate and media conscious individuals. How do movies shape society? Roddy Bogowa's black and white "A Small Room In The Big House" filmed with a Super 8 camera, deals with this issue of media consciousness by following the life of a little boy, who has been raised in a projection room of a movie theater where his father works. With his life intimately tied to movies, the little boy's reactions toward being filmed, such as sticking the microphone in his mouth to mute all sound, is indicative of his self consciousness of the media saturated society around him. The stark black and white images are evocative of a time when personal films reigned supreme in the works of the film-makers. They brought the audience back to a period of pure innocence and joy in the appreciation of the film medium.

    Overview: History of SFIAAFF
    Birth
The 1970s saw the emergence of an urgent voice by Asian American filmmakers who, inspired by the social activism of the '60s and the creation of Asian American media arts organizations like Visual Communications in Los Angeles and Asian CineVision in New York, began creating the first significant batch of Asian American films. Collectively, they sought to address a basic need-the need to see themselves on the screen; the need to see their stories told accurately and with all the richness and complexity accorded to others. Yet for all their efforts, limited access to mainstream media meant that these works were not reaching the widest possible audience. In 1980, independent filmmaker and instructor Loni Ding, along with other local artists and activists, organized a national conference of Asian American producers and media activists in Berkeley to take the next step. From that meeting, NAATA (National Asian American Telecommunications Association) was born. Its mission: to counteract negative images and stereotypes of Asian Americans in mainstream media by providing Asian American programming for broadcast on public television.
