My other observation is that the newer, more textured and nuanced accounts of the Asian experience in America published since 1980 have yet to make an impact upon the master narratives of U.S. history. Hopefully, this special issue of the Magazine of History will encourage a rethinking about how historians choose to represent Asian Americans, whether absent or present, and their place within the wider American past. In her Volatile Bodies: Toward a Corporeal Feminism What I am suggesting is that the black-white binarism of race functions in the American experience to sustain white supremacy, or the power of white over black, and that the introduction of a third (or fourth or fifth) position can disrupt (as well as reinforce) the dominant discourse and alter the relations of power. I think, therefore, that the Asian racial subject is indispensable to both an understanding of race and an intervention in the politics of race. Those outcomes, if correct, are forthrightly fundamental and singularly significant. Asians, the subject matter of this

A Shifting Context The diversity of Asian ethnic groups which the students represent has grown and correspondingly influenced the themes and issues presented. Initially the class was predominately composed of American-born Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Filipinos. Now the clear majority are foreign-born with South Asian and Southeast Asian students comprising a growing presence. This has shifted the interest of students from the pre-1965 to the post-1965 period, and focused attention on Asian ethnic groups which have been traditionally marginalized in Asian American Studies. Challenging Paradigms
I raise these issues in class to interrogate the assimilationist paradigm and to suggest its limits in comprehending and explaining the historical and contemporary experiences of Asian Americans. Building on this critique, I argue that an alternative perspective would have to account for distinct trajectories of incorporation, exclusion, and social/cultural autonomy, and not take assimilation as an inevitable outcome or desirable goal. The Racialization of Asian Americans I currently organize my course around the theory of racial formation (9). By racial formation, I mean the sociohistorical process by which racial categories are created, inhabited, transformed, and destroyed, a process in which race is a matter of both social structure and cultural representation. Utilizing this paradigm, I look at the shifting construction of Asian Americans and how they have been racialized over time. The class explores how distinct Asian ethnic groups entered this country, where they ended up in the labor market, how they were viewed in popular culture, and how they were treated by legal and political institutions. It simultaneously looks at how Asian Americans viewed themselves, responded to the situations they encountered, and in so doing, challenged and transformed their structural location and their representations.

Forum on Asian American History
For the month of April, 2000 this forum was moderated by John Kuo Wei Tchen, a historian and cultural activist. Since 1975, he has been studying interethnic and interracial relations of Asians and Americans, helping to build cultural organizations, and exploring how inquiry in the humanities and society can help deepen the quality of public discourse and policy. Dr. Tchen is currently the founding director of the Asian/Pacific/American Studies Program and Institute at New York University. He is the co-founder of the New York Chinatown History Project. Tchen's most recent book is New York Before Chinatown: Orientalism and the Shaping of American Culture, 1776-1882 (Johns Hopkins University Press) and he is co-editing a book oral histories on what it means to be a Chinese New Yorker. In 1991 Dr. Tchen was awarded the Charles S. Frankel Prize from the National Endowment for the Humanities, and in 1993 he received the City of New York Mayor's Award of Honor for Arts and Culture.

A Brief History of the Asian American Bar Association

I n 1987, a spirited band of lawyers joined to form the Asian American Bar Association of the Greater Chicago Area (AABA) on the belief that a professional bar association could serve not only the interests of its members, but also the community from which many of its members came.
AABA has continually reaffirmed its commitment to that belief and has grown to more than 400 members. From increasing awareness among elected officials on issues of importance to the Asian American community, to documenting the need for increased representation in all areas of the profession including the judiciary, to serving the legal needs of the community by supporting pro bono legal clinics and organizations, AABA has strived to serve Chicagoland's AA attorneys and the AA community.
