Enriching the Lives of Southeast Asian American Senior Citizens
Southeast Asian American seniors continue to add to the strength of the Asian American community and the nation. They have significant needs in the areas of health care, housing, public benefits, employment, and public safety. Last year thousands of disabled and elderly refugees lost their Supplemental Security Income (SSI). This is due to a 1996 law that states that any refugee who came to the United States after August 22, 1996 would only be able to receive SSI for seven years if they did not become citizens. Therefore, our community should:

Asian American Speakers Series Congressman Mike Honda
(D-CA) Washington, DC, May 12, 2004 Special thanks to Federal Express for sponsoring this wonderful luncheon. Across our nation in this month of May, Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is celebrated with community festivals and educational activities. This year's theme "Freedom for All—A Nation We Call Our Own," is especially timely as our civil liberties and civil rights are under assault. This event hosted by the Asia Society recognizes both the importance of APA Heritage Month and reminds us of the many challenges facing Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders today. Our nation has come a long way since the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II through the Civil Rights movement. However, since the attacks of 9/11, President Bush and some Members of Congress have used it as an opportunity to promote legislation that has had a detrimental impact upon civil our liberties and civil rights. Unfortunately, much of this legislation disproportionately affects Asian Americans.

The Asian American Mosaic
APAs emerge as a leading force on many fronts By Alethea Yip One of the most visible additions to the American mosaic in recent years has been the startling growth of the Asian Pacific American piece. Since 1980, the APA population has nearly doubled, from 3.7 million to 7.3 million, making APAs more than 3 percent of the U.S. population. The group is projected to reach more than 40 million by the year 2050, which would make up about 8 percent of the population. The term Asian Pacific American itself has broadened to include more than 50 different ethnic groups from throughout Asia, the Pacific Rim, and the Pacific Islands. The inclusion of such diverse groups into one category was originally intended to facilitate census data gathering, but the label "Asian Pacific American" has largely evolved into a political identity. The first Asians to come to America in large numbers were the Chinese laborers who helped to build the transcontinental railroad and who came to mine the gold in the hills of the Western United States in the mid-1800s. Thousands of the Chinese sojourners ventured to make their fortune in what they called Gum Saan, or Gold Mountain. Dreams of riches and a better life began to fade as the laborers discovered that, as a community, they were scapegoated for the economic ills of the country during the depression in the 1800s. Fingers pointed to the Chinese, and anti-Chinese campaigns were launched. The oftentimes violent anti-Chinese sentiment prevailed throughout the country, despite the fact that Chinese Americans during that time made up less than half of one percent of the population.

Proposed legislation offers increased aid to schools that meet quotas
By Kristin Burnham Published: Wednesday, November 19, 2003 If Congress approves a new bill, Syracuse University officials could have an incentive to further diversify the undergraduate student population over the next few years.
The bill, introduced by Congressman David Wu (D-Ore.), is an amendment to the Higher Education Act. The bill, which could be passed as soon as this spring, states that any college or university with an Asian-American and Pacific Island undergraduate enrollment of 10 percent or greater will be eligible for an increase in federal funding.
In addition to the specified enrollment quota, the university must also have a large number of students who qualify for need-based financial aid.
Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders currently account for about six percent of SU's undergraduate population, not including international students. According to the Office of Financial Aid, approximately three quarters of enrolled students are currently receiving need-based financial aid.
"Of course [the bill] is an incentive for the university to build upon the Asian-American population and Asian American-studies," said Marisa Craybas, associate director of government and community relations. "It will help us build upon academic instructions where Asians are underrepresented."
