The 2000 RTNDA/Ball State University Survey shows that minorities and women are having their best year ever in television. But minorities in radio are having the worst year in more than a decade. The percentage of minorities in television news this year has matched its all-time high of 21 percent, up from last year's 19 percent. More impressively, the percentage of minority TV news directors hit 14 percent, up from 8 percent last year and 10 percent in 1998. All groups except Native Americans increased in number. Women, too, scored impressive gains in television news. Women now make up 40 percent of the TV news work force. That's the highest ever-up slightly from last year's record 39 percent. Women TV news directors also hit a new high: 24 percent, up from last year's 20 percent and a slight improvement on the 23 percent reported in 1998. While the elimination of the FCC's stringent EEO guidelines clearly hasn't had an adverse effect on television news, radio news is a very different story. A full year after the guidelines were eliminated, the radio news work force is now 90 percent white-up from last year's 89 percent. Only 6 percent of radio news directors are minorities-compared to last year's 8 percent. Women fared better. Although women remained steady at 20 percent of radio news directors, they increased as a percentage of the workforce to 35 percent from last year's 29 percent.

At the same time, while working-age Filipino Americans in New York tend to speak English better than their city-wide counterparts, elderly Filipino New Yorkers have less command of English than the city’s overall elderly population. New York City’s Filipino American population, which grew by almost one-half in the last decade, is the fourth-largest Asian American group in the city. The New York metropolitan area also has the fourth-largest number of Filipino Americans in a U.S. metropolitan region.

Asian American Elders in New York City: A Study of Health, Social Needs, Quality of Life and Quality of Care is the first comprehensive examination of the demographics, living conditions, social supports and overall life satisfaction of elderly Asian Americans. The Federation, a public policy leadership organization, collaborated with the Brookdale Center on Aging at Hunter College to produce the study, which provides an in-depth portrait of older Asian Americans, identifies critical unmet needs, and recommends action steps to fill service gaps. The study is based on a regionally representative survey, conducted by Harris Interactive, Inc., of more than 400 New York City residents age 65 and older and belonging to the city's six largest Asian American ethnic groups: Chinese, Korean, Indian, Filipino, Vietnamese and Japanese Americans.

Minor in Asian American Studies
Asian Americans constitute one of the fastest growing minority populations in California and the United States. A diverse group, Asian Americans trace cultural heritages from nations as varied as China, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, India, and, most recently, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. The Asian American Studies Program provides students with an opportunity to learn about the cultural richness of the American past and the variety in its ethnic mosaic. The oldest theme in American history has been immigration, and knowledge of Asian Americans promotes an awareness and appreciation for cultural pluralism and multiculturalism within the United States.
The Program
The Asian American Studies Program offers classes that focus upon the history and contemporary experience of Asians in the United States. These courses explore themes in local and ethnic history, trans-Pacific contact, cultural change and adaptation, and interethnic relations. Those who major in business, social science, international relations, and the human service professions recognize their relevance.
The Asian American Studies Program does not offer a major, but a minor is available for those who wish to develop a special expertise in this subject.

Domestic Violence and Asian American Women
Prevalence of Domestic Violence Against Asian American Women
A woman is physically battered every nine seconds in the United States. One out of three women reports physical abuse at the hands of an intimate partner at least once in their lives. Every year, an estimated 1.5 to 3.9 million women are physically abused by their partners. In all intimate relationships, both heterosexual and lesbian, domestic violence occurs 20 to 25% of the time. Domestic violence occurs in every community regardless of race, ethnicity, class, or sexual orientation. Yet, domestic violence is an underreported crime. For Asian American communities, the paucity of data makes it even more difficult to estimate the prevalence of partner abuse. This report extrapolates from the few specific studies that do exist. The studies indicate that domestic violence is at least as prevalent in the Asian American population as the general American population and may be higher in certain Asian subgroups. For example, in Chicago, a survey of 150 Korean women found that 60% reported physical abuse. The data also suggests that Asian American women may be at higher risk for fatalities related to domestic violence than women in the general population.
