Please help us update this directory!
This directory began as a FAQ assembled by regular posters to the USENET group soc.culture.asian.american. Descriptions of programs were last updated in 1994, before the World Wide Web took over as the dominant mode of mass communication over the Internet. Please help us bring this directory up to date this year by sending email to Andrew Chin . Note that there is no interest here in listing Asian Studies programs, which are far more common than Asian American Studies programs and concern different subject matter.

I enjoyed seeing many of you at the annual meeting in Evanston and, of course, chatting with you. It was nice seeing the HES mugs there, thanks to Linda Eisenmann; I use mine on a regular basis at the office. History of Education Quarterly has experienced yet another outstanding year. We received 81 manuscript submissions in calendar year 2003. In addition to a special issue devoted to the history of Asian-American education, that consisted of 4 articles and 1 essay review, Volume 43 contained 9 articles, 1 Presidential Address, 6 essay reviews, 70 book reviews, and 1 commentary. Course Description Concurrently, this course also takes a critical look at what it means to be an "Asian American." Are there some essential, identifying factors that makes one "Asian?" How have we come to conceptualize the "Other," the "Oriental" in the development of western colonialism? What role does schooling have in perpetuating "otherness" within the model minority stereotype (especially since Asian American educational experiences have been idealized and popularized in the US as a successful progression toward the American dream of hard work, merit, reward for effort, and a culture predisposed to learning)? Does the history of Asian Americans in the U.S. have any relevance in the lives of students today? It is hoped that by the end of the semester, you come away with more critical, reflective questions than answers or solutions to the questions posed. The intensive, multi-stage, writing requirement is designed to assist in your critical reflection, analysis and synthesis of the readings and class discussions. The sequential writing process is meant for you to critically engage with the issues at hand, to begin to develop a level of mastery in understanding the complex subject area in Asian American education.

As a child, Booker T. Washington carried the books for his owner's daughter and caught glimpses of her schoolroom abuzz with learning. "The picture of several dozen boys and girls in a schoolroom engaged in study made a deep impression," wrote Washington, who believed going to school would be like "getting into paradise." Who was entitled to the privileges of "paradise?" Would it provide all children with suitable preparations for future endeavors?
