Asian Art in America: The View from New York City
by Reena Jana “New York will continue to be one of the most active centers for Asian art in the 21st century. With the vast holdings at the Met and the Brooklyn Museum, and exhibitions at the Asia Society, and Japan Society, New Yorkers and visitors have constant chances to see Asian art, both traditional and contemporary. And with organizations like the Asian American Arts Center and the Asian American Arts Alliance, there is increasingly greater attention paid to Asian American artists in the city.” Vishakha N. Desai , Senior Vice President of the Asia Society and Director of the Museum and Cultural Programs The ornate Manhattan homes of America’s reigning Gilded Age families, including the Vanderbilts and the Havemeyers, were among the first in the country to incorporate Asian art into interior design. The Asian references were informed and far-flung: The Havemeyer family library was designed to reflect the bright hues of ancient Noh dance robes, and its walls were painted a shade of green that was inspired by a lacquer panel by Ritsuo, a Japanese printmaker of the 16th century. New Yorkers were introduced to Japanese wood-block prints by Shugio Hiromichi, the director of the First Japan Manufacturing and Trading Company, a Japanese importer of porcelain and parasols. In 1889, Shugio curated the first significant show of ukiyo-e (“pictures of the floating world"), colorful wood-block prints and posters representing urban and natural pleasures, such as geisha in outdoor revelry or theater actors in costume. These lyrical, contemplative prints inspired a host of turn-of-the-century painters. James Whistler, in particular, borrowed from the ukiyo-e abstract sensibility in his work, saying, “If the man who paints only the tree, or flower, or other surface he sees before him were an artist, the king of artists would be the photographer. It is for the artist to do something beyond this.”

Media mixed on canvas 76x62”, 2000. The Annual series of exhibitions began modestly as a reformulation of a series started five years earlier entitled "Ten Chinatown: First Annual Open Studio Exhibition." Five of these Open Studio exhibitions were held. Thus, the Annual series is actually sixteen years in the making. The series was changed when, after five years, too few artists had their studios in the neighborhood and the idea for the annual exhibition had to be changed. How then write about the Annual series as an Arts Centre endeavor? Judging from hindsight may render one useful perspective. The role of the Annuals/Open Studios in the Asian American Arts Centre’s visual arts program was to exhibit many artists, often quite diverse, eclectic and innovative. It was, however, only one part of a larger effort to bring attention to a particular kind of artist who we believed to a large measure had been overlooked. The work of AAAC began with visual artists in 1982 with the start of the Archive. This work was shaped in 1974 when the organization was named "Asian American" and again in 1984 by identifying artists as "Asian American." In this way we sought to raise the visibility of the presence of difference. Some of the artists in the first Open Studio show were Kunie Sugiura, Arlan Huang, Jerry Kwan, Martin Wong, Zarina Hashmi, Charles Yuen, John Duff and Tom Butter.

This exhibition marks our second major collaboration with the Asian American Arts Centre. We first realized the potential for a meaningful synergy between our organizations while jointly organizing an exhibition entitled Cross-Cultural Voices II: Between Memories which was presented in the Fall of 1999. We plan to explore this potential further in the coming years by continuing to work together with the Asian American Arts Centre to ensure that the artistic contributions of Korean and Korean American artists are incorporated fully into the mainstream of the Asian American experience in the United States.

An opening reception will be held on Friday, Jan. 12, 1996 from 5-7pm.
ASIAN AMERICAN EXHIBIT
Noting the unprecedented growth of the Asian American population in the last three decades, the Asia Society Galleries in New York have organized "Asia/America: Identities in Contemporary Asian American Art," an exhibition of paintings, sculptures, photographs and mixed media installations by 20 foreign-born Asian American visual artists in order to examine the complex questions of identity faced by Asians living in the West. To assemble the exhibition, guest curator Margo Machida, herself a third- generation Japanese American, traveled throughout the United States visiting studios and interviewing artists. The artists, most of whom came to America after 1965, come from eight different areas of Asia: China, India, Japan, Korea, Laos, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. "While only a few works address the question of cultural identity through specific imagery," she said, "all are informed by the artists' struggles to define themselves as people of Asian descent living in America." While the works in the exhibition will be grouped by artist and not theme, text panels and interpretative labels, including quotations from the artists about their intentions, will place the individual pieces in context and draw attention to common concerns.

MultiCultural Review
Amy Ling brings together in one comprehensive volume poets, novelists, dramatists, musicians, songwriters, composers, filmmakers, choreographers, and performance artists who span three generations and represent the broad spectrum of ethnicities that make up Asian America. They share thoughts on their work, their audiences, and their relationship to the Asian American rubric and American life and culture. They provide a rare glimpse of the inspirations and aspirations out of which their energy and ideas grow and place their work, each differently, in the complex fabric of American life. An indispensible anthology of work and an inspiring and provocative cultural record, Yellow Light casts a revealing glow on the contradictions, influences, imagination, and humanity expressed through the vastly varied creative projects of Americans with Asian roots.

Asian American Arts Alliance was founded in 1983 by a group of artists, activists, and community leaders to raise public awareness of Asian American arts. In the early years we focused on producing an annual arts festival, Roots to Reality, and publishing a monthly events calendar. Later, significant accomplishments included sponsoring the first Asian American arts conference in New York City, Defining Our Culture(s), Ourselves, at Hunter College in 1991; and organizing the first national Asian American arts conference, Beyond Boundaries, (in collaboration with the Association of Performing Arts Presenters) in 1993. Over the years, the Arts Alliance has broadened its scope as New York City's Asian American population has grown in size and ethnic diversity. Today, we provide a centralized information network, vital resources and advocacy services, and ongoing technical assistance to Asian American artists and organizations. Programs include print and on-line resource directories and event calendars; Dialogue
