Department of Geography
Page 80-83 Paul B. Wilson, Chairman Geography is the study of what places are like as a result of the combination and spatial arrangement of things within and around them. It is the study of the arrangement of things in space in somewhat the same sense that history is the study of the sequence of events in time. Thus, geography is more a point of view than it is a body of facts. Geographers work in business, industry, government, planning and teaching. The tasks of geographers range from determining the optimal location for a new supermarket to doing the biophysical and socioeconomic studies required for urban and regional planning. The Department of Geography offers the Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in geography, and a teaching major and minor in geography. The Department is also the home of a multi-disciplinary Master of Science in Rural, Town, and Regional Planning. The bachelor degree program provides a broad liberal education, qualifies graduates for a variety of professional jobs, and prepares the better students for graduate studies in geography, planning or related fields. The Master of Arts program prepares the candidates for a somewhat greater range of employment, including teaching in community and junior colleges, and for doctoral studies in geography or allied disciplines. The Master of Science degree prepares the candidate for employment in planning and related fields, focusing upon smaller communities and sparsely populated rural areas with only small cities, such as Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and the Dakotas. See the graduate catalog for more information on the M.A. and M.S. degrees.

Department of Geography
The 1997-98 University of Montana Catalog Paul B. Wilson, Chair Geography aims to provide a broad-ranging perspective on humans as inhabitants and transformers of the face of the earth. The search for this understanding involves thorough study of the physical earth, its habitation by humans, and the resulting diversity of regions and places. Geographers study the physical earth by examining the interlocking systems of the natural environment including climate, landforms, soils, and biota. Humans are studied by examining those diverse historical, cultural, social, economic, and political structures and processes which affect the location and spatial organization of population groups and their activities. Regions and places, whether described as nations, cities, ecological units, or landscapes, are studied by integrating and interpreting their physical and human relationships in an effort to better understand them and the problems they face. Geographers are often found working in business, industry, government, planning and teaching. Their tasks may range from determining the optimal location for a new supermarket to doing the biophysical and socioeconomic studies required for urban and regional planning. Geographers trained in cartography may find professional opportunities in the various aspects of making and communicating with maps. The branches of geography, which correspond more or less to the geography courses listed in this catalog, tend to fall into these groupings: (1) human geography-cultural, economic and urban; (2) physical geography-climatology, hydrogeography, geomorphology and biogeography; (3) regional geography-studies of regions or territories, such as East Asia, Pacific Northwest and Montana; (4) geographic concepts, methods, and techniques-historical geography, map and air photo interpretation, cartography, quantitative spatial analysis, field techniques and geographic research methods.

DECLARATION OF THE APEC EDUCATION MINISTERIAL
"TOWARD EDUCATION STANDARDS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY" 6 August 1992
  • Education Ministers and other senior education officials (hereinafter referred to as "the Ministers") from Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, the People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, the Republic of the Philippines, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand and the United States of America, met in Washington from 5 to 6 August 1992. The Ministers came together at the invitation of the President of the United States to discuss education standards and related issues of mutual interest.
  • Need for Cooperative Action in Education
  • The Ministers declared that there is a need for APEC participants to continue to work cooperatively to identify strategies for addressing the challenges presented to their education systems by the growing interdependence of economies and peoples in the Asia-Pacific region and the world. These challenges include the need for students to develop the skills required in a technologically sophisticated world and a better understanding of the cultures and economies of the Asia-Pacific region. The Ministers noted that the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum is an appropriate and attractive arena within which to discuss these issues, due to APEC's ability to relate education to the broader economic, social, and cultural environment of the Asia-Pacific region.

To encourage interactions among environmental scientists and disseminate information on environmental toxicology and chemistry. To provide a forum for communication among professionals in government, business, academia, and other segments of the environmental science community and for the protection and welfare of the general public.
  • The move for an Asia/Pacific unit of SETAC began in 1991, with the lead taken by Dr. Graeme Batley and Dr. Eun Namkung. SETAC A/P was officially included as a geographic unit of SETAC in 1997. It currently comprises approximately 300 members from 12 regions, representing academia, cooperate, government, and research sectors. Some of the proposed plans for the coming year include regular news bulletins, regional meetings, web site development, and student support. The utmost goal of this year will be "Propagation of the SETAC Spirit of Cooperation" among scientists for solving environmental problems in the Asia/Pacific region.

    ISSUES PAPER FROM AOTEAROA/NEW ZEALAND
      A. A Critical Political Issue
In March 1996, during another election year, immigration again surfaced as an issue. The minority New Zealand First party is campaigning to shut the door, especially on migrants who do not seem to be serious about settling in New Zealand. Asian immigration is now the target (Heeringa 1996; Legat 1996). The Waikato Times captured the essence of contemporary media rhetoric in its feature headline on March 6: ‘NZ’s Asian Immigrants: Investors or Invaders?’ Once again net migration is approaching the 30,000 mark—for the first time since 1974. Current policy, which is based on a ‘points system’ introduced in November 1991, focuses on target numbers of approvals for entry. Immigration can be rapidly adjusted in line with government policy, or indeed political sensitivities, as one issue or another is seen to gain public approval or opposition. The contribution which international migration is making to the growing ethno-cultural diversity of New Zealand’s population is a matter of considerable public interest and concern particularly given the liberalisation of policy since the late 1980s (see Ongley 1996). More than a year ago, the Minister of Immigration called for ‘a debate in New Zealand on what should be the optimum levels of immigration and population’ (
