Home Advantage Issue 15 Industry and geographical focus
Changes are afoot for Asia Pacific grocery retailers as they tackle a massive expansion in customer demand From the Land of the Rising Sun to the Roof of the World, from Bondi Beach to the Gobi Desert, the Asia Pacific region embraces a vast kaleidoscope of languages, religions, traditions, politics, lifestyles, cuisine, climates and economies. But the countries of this vast region have one thing in common: the huge potential for dynamic growth. This potential is reflected in the fast-moving consumer goods industry and, in particular, the grocery retail sector.
In recent years, many of Europe's leading retail names have expanded existing grocery operations or set up new ventures in Asia Pacific, including Carrefour (France), Royal Ahold (The Netherlands), Boots and Tesco from the UK, and from the US, the world's biggest retailer, Wal-Mart, to name but a few. Drawn by increasing consumer demand and fuelled by rapid economic growth, the biggest names in US and European retailing have boldly moved into the Asia Pacific region, bringing Western fashions, tastes and business practices to audiences eager and ready to receive them.

    • Advancing Corporate Governance Reform in Asia APEC Study Center, Columbia University For decades, Asia's rapid economic growth served as a model for other developing economies. The Financial Crisis that devastated the region in early 1997 shocked policy makers and business leaders around the globe. Prior to the crisis, corporate governance was viewed by many in Asia as irrelevant, dismissed as a concern for more advanced (and largely Western) economies to consider at their leisure. Today, "Corporate Governance" verges on becoming a household world, not only in those economies hardest hit by the crisis, but thought Asia. On 15 February 2002, the APEC Study Center and The Asia Foundation, together with the Program in International Economic Policy, School for International and Public Affairs held a half-day panel discussion, presenting three speakers whose combined expertise reflects the diversity of approaches pursued in promoting reform.

    Enhancing profitability in tariff markets
Verne Baker, Head of General Insurance Consulting, South East Asia, suggests specific strategies for beating the tariff. Conventional wisdom dictates that companies operating in tariff markets should write as much business as possible, regardless of portfolio mix. In our opinion, such a business strategy is a potential recipe for disaster! More astute companies aim to weight their portfolios with risks that are expected to be profitable. For countries with impending removal of tariffs, now is a good time for insurers to start adjusting their mix of business, so that an optimal portfolio is in place when the "free-market" emerges. In this article, while the focus is on motor insurance, the comments are equally applicable to other classes of business. Asian markets with tariff rates
