Vertebrates (or Craniata) include the well-known animals such as fish (Pisces), amphibians (Amphibia), reptiles (Reptilia), dinosaurs (Dinosauria, usually included in the Reptilia), birds (Aves, sometimes classed as feathered Reptiles or Dinosaurs), and mammals, including humans (Mammalia). Fossils of all these groups have been found in Kentucky except for the dinosaurs, which have the potential to be found in far western Kentucky, although none have been found to date. The common feature of vertebrate animals is that they have a spinal column and associated vertebrae. In some animals, like sharks, the vertebrae are composed of cartilage. In other animals, like mammals and reptiles, vertebrae are composed of bone. Bones can be fossilized; cartilage is generally not fossilized. Vertebrate fossils are rare in Kentucky. Most reported fossils that look like bones, claws, or teeth, are actually fossils of other types of animals or are pseudofossils. Pseudofossils are rocks that look like fossils, but are not fossils. If you think you have found a fossil bone, look at the Recognizing fossil bones section first. Look at the criteria for identifying fossil bones, and see if the fossil you have looks like the fossils shown to determine if it is actually a bone or not. If after comparing your fossil to the other fossils, it appears that your fossil may be a fossil bone, try to match it to the fossils shown below in Vertebrate fossils found in Kentucky. ARIZONA KOA camping in Arizona Petrified Forest National Park. I loved this place when I was eight. Why? This is the place to buy rocks and fossils. The area itself is not very exciting unless you know what to look for along the way. We purchased an audiotape at the Petrified Forest Museum. It is called Dawn of the Dinosaurs. It provides just enough information so that the ride is not boring. It is not a story tape so it is best suited for those older than six. The visitor's center features the skeletons of many dinosaurs, some older even than T. Rex. The skeletons include Triassic phytosaurs, similar to modern day crocodiles. A Junior Ranger certification program is also offered. This area is desolate and wild looking. It is an easy day trip from the Flagstaff area. Although this buffalo ( Bison bison ) skull was found on a sandbar, and therefore has no stratigraphic control, it makes a great reference specimen. Further collecting at this locality (in western Iowa) has produced numerous fossil Bison specimens (including Bison cf B. occidentalis ) along with elk ( Cervus elaphus ), deer ( Odocoileus sp.), mammoth ( Mammuthus sp.), bear ( Ursus americanus ), and many others. Unfortunately, a specific source of the material (which could be studied as a site) has not been established. Much of the material has been recovered from point bars or as isolated elements protruding from the cut banks. Several broken and whole points (artifacts) have been recovered from the creek as well, but none in association with the fossils. Since it's still early in the season, there are only a half-dozen of us scattered about Niobrara's newly refurbished 76-space RV park, situated on a cedar-studded bluff overlooking the river. The predawn tranquillity has enticed some of the park's more curious critters into the campground, and during a short walk to the edge of the bluff we pass within a few yards of a pair of white-tailed deer that check us out for a moment, then resume grazing, and a platoon of wild turkeys on morning patrol - wary of us, but hardly disturbed by our presence. Near the riverbank, while patiently waiting for the sun's rays to splash across the water, we spot a stealthy mink and a whole bevy of waterfowl. A pair of muskrats paddles by as well, only to disappear into the marsh grass beneath us.
