français About the ACS News FAQ ... Summits THE GREATER CARIBBEAN: GLOBALISATION, FRAGMENTATION AND INTEGRATION Professor Norman Girvan Secretary General, Association of Caribbean States Ministerial Council Office of the SG Members Meetings ... REMOTE MAIL Speech at the Opening of the UNA Academic Year Curacao, September 6, 2002 Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, My presence here is in fulfilment of a long-standing commitment. It was over one year ago that I met your Rectus Magnificus, Dr. Goretti Narain, in Port of Spain, and listened to her vision of strengthening the links between your University and the academic community of the Caribbean. Dr. Narain's vision, energy and dynamism were infectious. Hers was the kind of invitation it was impossible to resist. And so I stand here now, somewhat in awe of the distinguished gathering and the auspicious occasion. One might say that it is also a result of a long-standing commitment of a different kinda commitment to the Caribbean region as a primary frame of reference, a passion that has possessed me for a great deal of my life. It is that region-our Caribbean region-that will be the frame of reference of what I say this evening. | |
