About the Building
The front page of our web site depicts scenes from the building that houses the Department. Rather than being spread out between different buildings or campuses, the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology is entirely based in the former Baptist Theological College, a period building in the heart of Georgian Clifton and in the centre of the modern University campus. As well as providing a pleasant and friendly atmosphere for classes, this is an architecturally significant building included by English Heritage on the List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest (Grade II). The Baptist College was founded in Bristol in 1679, and after being based in premises in Broadmead and Stokes Croft, in 1914 the new Baptist College building at Woodland Road was commissioned. The site of the building lies adjacent to the Civil War Fort, which was converted in the 18th century into a polite house and garden landscape. The Baptist College looks out onto Royal Fort House and Gardens, which and are also owned by the University and are open to students. The building remained in use by the Baptist College until 1999, when the Department moved into it.

Estonian applied art as a whole, as well as its teaching, reached a new Besides the crafts that had been copying the vanishing original folk art and had

Urbanisation and the concomitant rapid changes in society had created the preconditions for the emergence of professional Estonian fine and applied art by the early 20th century. As local German master artisans were often less than pleased to share their trade secrets with their socially inferior co-citizens, Estonians chose to go and study abroad: in St Petersburg, several applied art schools in Germany, etc. A number of the great names of early Estonian national applied art - e.g. Vanda Juhasoo, Juuli Suits, Alma Koskel, Anni Varma - who started out establishing handicraft courses and schools in the early 20th century, had received their education at the Helsinki Ateneum art school in Finland. In addition to such direct influences, the general inspiration provided by Estonia's kindred nation across the Gulf of Finland whose 'national awakening' had occurred somewhat earlier, was of essential importance.
Bookbinding by Mihkel Ulemann (around 1900) Inevitably, the existing trade-related and workshop-based instruction was gradually replaced by public applied art schooling: 1914 saw the establishment of the Tallinn Arts and Crafts School that taught leatherwork, bookbinding, decorative painting and sculpture, graphic art and printing, textile art, ceramics, metal and glass art. Re-named the State Arts and Crafts School in 1924, it had soon acquired a central role in the instruction of nearly every field of applied arts practised in or introduced to Estonia.

Especially prior to the 1930s, it was difficult for anyone, let alone women, to become a professional artist in Alberta. Art schools and an artistic community simply did not exist for many years and those who want to pursue an artistic career had to travel outside the province and often even outside Canada to receive training. Gradually this changed in the 1920s and 1930s as schools and places of exhibition for artists were opened: in 1924, the Edmonton Museum of Art (later the Edmonton Art Gallery ) was established and by 1927 the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art (later the Alberta College of Art) in Calgary began offering art courses. In the late 1930s, the University of Alberta started developing a fine arts program and the Banff School of Fine Arts was opened. However, it still remained very difficult for Albertans to receive training and make a living as an artist.
Elsie Park Gowan Elsie Park Gowan (nee Young) was born in Helensburgh, Scotland on 9 September, 1906 and came to Edmonton, Alberta in 1912. She grew up in Bawlf, Alberta and attended Normal School in Camrose. Gowan taught at Rocky Mountain House and at the age of 22, she attended the University of Alberta.

ARTS AND CRAFTS
French version Reprinted from the AATF National Bulletin, Special Issue, Vol. 24 No. 5 (May 1999) The Arts and Arts and Crafts were chosen as themes for the second day of National French Week because of the enduring principle that students learn by doing, and that both French language and French-speaking cultures can be expressed by the performance arts and the practical arts. The arts related to French language and French-speaking cultures comprise a wide range of artistic and performance expression, including art, visual arts, music and dance, theater, film, literature, as well as artistic expression in new and evolving technologies. Arts and crafts are generally associated with encouraging student artistic expression and involve some of the areas listed above. Most teachers of French incorporate arts and crafts in their teaching, because they give students many opportunities to use and practice French in different kinds of practical applications. While students can be involved in the arts in different kinds of performances, they can also develop appreciation of the æsthetic values of world-wide contributions to the arts by French speakers. The incorporation of the arts and arts and crafts into the French program gives students a deeper understanding of French language and cultures, and, in addition, it enables them to develop an appreciation for the arts and provides them the means to the creative expression of their knowledge.

I follow a progressive, curriculum-based methodology. You will find yourself lost if you drop in and out, especially at the Adv-beginner and Intermediate levels. Please assess yourself reasonably. It is not fair to your partners if you promote yourself beyond your ability. If you are as good as you think, you can raise your partner's level. Beginner:
Adv-beginner:
Intermediate:
Adv-Intermediate:
Becoming proficient with Turns and Sacadas, 9 months - 24 months
Advanced: Technique, Vocabulary, Special-Topics, Decorations of the turn. Because everyone is different, these time frames are very approximate, and they assume you are dancing 5 - 10 hours per week. You progress faster if you truly master the lower levels rather than moving on too quickly. "Advanced" Tango is mainly about connection, smoothness, musicality, feeling, not vocabulary. Everybody learns differently, and repetition is the key to success.
