Whistler, Women, and Fashion
Madonna and Steven Klein: X-STaTIC Pro=CeSS
"Whistler, Women, and Fashion" takes one behind the scenes, to portraiture, modern art, and, yes, fashion in the making. By pairing painting and costume, private sketches and commercial prints, it takes on more than a few handy assumptions. As daring and superficial as James McNeill Whistler himself, the exhibition gets one thinking about notions of art and craft, women and beauty, commerce and the avant-garde. It also makes for a useful contrast with another display of fashion and self-promotion downtown, by Madonna and Steven Klein
Surface tension
The Frick assembles a career survey in miniature, around two portraits that, by the terms of the bequest, cannot travel. Such a constraint has recently stimulated well-focused exhibitions of work by Edouard Manet and . The Frick did something similar for Whistler back in 1995, for a fashionable male portrait also in the permanent collection. In the 1860s, Whistler's favorite model, her Irish complexion, and her white dress serve as backdrops for a fluttering array of color. The fan and brown flowers in front, like the vase and mirror behind her, blur the boundaries between surface, objects, and interior. The lines between European and oriental traditions, insider and outsider art, change as well.

Whistler, James Abbott McNeill (1834-1903). American-born painter and graphic artist, active mainly in England. He spent several of his childhood years in Russia (where his father had gone to work as a civil engineer) and was an inveterate traveller. His training as an artist began indirectly when, after his discharge from West Point Military Academy for `deficiency in chemistry', he learnt etching as a US navy cartographer. In 1855 he went to Paris, where he studied intermittently under Gleyre, made copies in the Louvre, acquired a lasting admiration for Velázquez , and became a devotee of the cult of the Japanese print and oriental art and decoration in general. Through his friend Fantin-Latour he met Courbet , whose Realism inspired much of his early work. The circles in which he moved can be gauged from Fantin-Latour's Homage to Delacroix , in which Whistler is portrayed alongside Baudelaire, Manet , and others. He settled in London in 1859, but often returned to France. His At the Piano (Taft Museum, Cincinnati, 1859) was well received at the Royal Academy exhibition in 1860 and he soon made a name for himself, not just because of his talent, but also on account of his flamboyant personality. He was famous for his wit and dandyism, and loved controversy. His life-style was lavish and he was often in debt.

Art and Poetry

James McNeill Whistler was one of the great characters of the Nineteenth Century, perhaps the World's first celebrity. He was outrageous, unconventional, original, monumentally egotistical, and, most importantly, highly talented. He also was employed by the Coast Survey for a short period - an organization that built its reputation on standardized products and standardized methods. The collision of James McNeill Whistler and the Coast Survey is detailed in an account by John Ross Key, a fellow artist and office-mate of Whistler's, and in a biography written by E.R. and J. Pennell shortly after Whistler's death. These two accounts give insights into Whistler as man and artist and into the Coast Survey, the first great science agency in the United States Federal Government.

Selected Works from the Hunterian Art Gallery
March 4-May 22
You have a rare opportunity to see an exhibition of James McNeill Whistler's own personal collection of his art. The Taft Museum of Art is the only midwest venue for a U.S. tour of works by the artist from the Hunterian Art Gallery in Glasgow, Scotland. The exhibition features 12 oil paintings and 57 works on paper. Whistler's most well-known subject matter will be on view, including a few elegant portraits and some striking landscapes and urban views of France and England. The works on paper consist of a wide range of media: drawings, watercolors, etchings, lithographs, and designs for interior decoration. The exhibition also unveils the private side of Whistler by presenting a selection of female nude studies that are much less familiar to the public. "Of particular interest is the large group of etchings, a medium for which Whistler is renowned," said Lynne Ambrosini, chief curator at the Taft Museum of Art. "These are masterpieces, examples that Whistler kept for himself, and key objects in the etching revival of the mid-19th century in England and France."

His father was a builder of railroads and took his nine year old son to St. Petersburg where the boy lived like an aristocrat and attended the Russian Academy of Fine Arts. When his father died, Whistler was brought back to the family farm, but he was restless and discontented, flunked out of West Point, lost several jobs, and then, having read Murger's La Vie de Bohème, left for Paris in 1855, never to return home. James Abbott McNeill Whistler American (Massachusetts, 1834 - 1903)

xxxx American painter and etcher, who assimilated Japanese art styles, made technical innovations, and championed modern art. Many regard him as preeminent among etchers.
Whistler was born on July 10, 1834, in Lowell, Massachusetts. He entered the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1851, did not do well in his studies, and left in 1854 to take a job as a draftsman with the U.S. Coast Survey. One year later he left the United States and went to Paris, where he became a pupil of the Swiss classicist painter Charles Gabriel Gleyre. Formal instruction influenced him less, however, than his acquaintance with the French realist painter Gustave Courbet, other leading contemporary artists, and his own study of the great masters and of Japanese styles. In Paris, Whistler won recognition as an etcher when his first series of etchings, Twelve Etchings from Nature (commonly called The French Set), appeared in 1858. Soon after he moved to London, where his paintings, hitherto rejected repeatedly by the galleries of Paris, found acceptance. At the Piano was shown by the Royal Academy of London in 1860. In 1863Symphony in White No. 1: The White Girl (National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.) won great acclaim in Paris. Thereafter exhibitions of his work aroused increasing international interest, as did his flamboyantly eccentric personality.

    Free Trade Wharf, 1879
Original etching printed on laid paper with full margins. Signed in the plate with Whistler's butterfly monogram. Fifth state of five states. MBM Watermark. Dimensions: image: 18.5 cm x 9.8 cm, sheet: 25.6 cm x 17.8 cm. Catalogue Reference: Kennedy No. 163. This image depicts the Free Trade Wharf in Ratcliffe and belongs to Whistler's Series of Sixteen Etchings on the Thames now commonly referred to as the Thames set. In the 1790's, the East India Company built several warehouses on the wharf. Those can be seen in Whistler's image. Today, only luxury housing can be found on this site. When Whistler had moved from Paris to London in May of 1859, he had absorbed the French Impressionist feeling for light and wanted to apply it to a British approach to composition and theme. Because of his fascination with the Thames, Whistler moved to a pub at Wapping to be as close to the river as possible in order to experience every mood. Whistler studied the working men whose lives were intimately connected with the river, and who lived on its boats and barges, docks and wharves, and in the dark streets and alleys around Wapping and Limehouse.

    About the Artist
During the mid-to-late nineteenth century, there was a resurgence of interest in the art of etching and a movement to elevate the medium to the same artistic stature as painting and sculpture. This movement became known as the Nineteenth Century Etching Revival. Until the late eighteenth to early nineteenth century, etching and engraving had been used primarily for commercial reproduction. With the development of lithography in 1798 and of photography in about 1839 as reproductive methods, artists began to advance etching as a means of independent personal artistic expression. The artists took a sometimes romantic but also realistic look at their environment: the people, the restful rural landscapes; and the vibrant, growing cities. They experimented with the etching process and captured a quality of line, tone and space unachievable in any other print medium. Rotherhithe , 1860 (etching and drypoint; iii/iii: Kennedy66; Mansfield 66; Lochnan 70;) by James Abbott McNeill Whistler exemplifies this approach with the sketchy, delicate line work in the face and hands of the figures, the aggressive black tones in the ship and the visual depth of the waterway.
