Whistler, James Abbott McNeill
Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 2 items Whistler, James Abbott McNeill (1834-1903), American painter and etcher, who assimilated Japanese art styles, made technical innovations, and championed modern art. Many regard him as preeminent among etchers. Whistler was born on July 10, 1834, in Lowell, Massachusetts. He entered the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1851, did not do well in his studies, and left in 1854 to take a job as a draftsman with the U.S. Coast Survey. One year later he left the United States and went to Paris, where he became a pupil of the Swiss classicist painter Charles Gabriel Gleyre. Formal instruction influenced him less, however, than his acquaintance with the French realist painter Gustave Courbet , other leading contemporary artists, and his own study of the great masters and of Japanese styles.

In connection with his Falling Rocket: Nocturne in Black and Gold Nocturne in Black and Gold, and Arrangement in Gray and Black (the famed portrait of the artist's mother, 1872; Louvre). Whistler won the argument in court but payment of the court costs left him bankrupt. Toward the end of his life Whistler won wide recognition for his admirable draftsmanship, exquisite color, and extreme technical proficiency both as painter and etcher. As an etcher he achieved a high reputation. More than 400 superb plates remain. He also excelled in lithography, watercolor, and pastel. Fine examples of Whistler's painting are in the galleries of London, Paris, Pittsburgh, Washington, D.C., Chicago, and New York City. The most representative collection is that in the Freer Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., which also contains an entire room that he decorated in a style that anticipated art nouveau Nocturne in Green and Gold, Cremorne Gardens at Night

Administrative/Biographical History
James McNeill Whistler was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, USA, in 1834 to George Washington Whistler, civil engineer, and his second wife, Anna Matilda McNeill. The family moved to Russia in 1843 where Whistler studied art with a student, A. O. Koritskii, and at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg. In London, he saw Rembrandt etchings owned by his brother-in-law, Francis Seymour Haden, and Raphael cartoons at Hampton Court. After his father's death in 1849 the family returned to America. In 1851, he entered the United States Military Academy at West Point, studying art under Robert W. Weir. Deficiencies in chemistry and discipline led to his expulsion in 1854. An interlude in the drawing division of the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, Washington, D. C., provided training in etching, the basis of his future career. In 1855 he sailed for Europe to study art, and, while remaining an American citizen, never returned. He attended classes at the

Artist - Whistler Whistler, James Abbott McNeill (1834-1903) Portrait by Walter Greaves Born in the United States, Whistler trained in Russia and France before settling in London. His passion for Japanese art and his interest in creating mood through colour, composition and musical suggestion made him a leading figure of the avant-garde. His defence of art for art’s sake at his famous libel trial against the critic John Ruskin also made him the champion of the British aesthetic movement. Whistler took John Ruskin to court for accusing him of ‘flinging a pot of paint in the public’s face’. Exhibition curated by the National Gallery, London

Whistler's father was an engineer and the first five years of his life were spent in St Petersburg in Russia where his father was engaged in a railway project and where the boy learned to speak fluent French. Back in the U.S. after leaving school he first studied for the army at West Point, but failed although he learned his draughtsmanship skills there. He left America, never to return, He first went to Paris to study art under Charles Gleyre, but the principal influence on him was Courbet and also the prints of Hokkusai which had recently been introduced to Europe. He settled in London, where his mother joined him in 1863. He spent a period in Venice where he made two series of etchings which had immense success when exhibited back in London where he had now settled. He became a celebrated portrait and landscape artist. In 1877 he exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery and one of his Nocturne paintings was villified by the eminent critic Ruskin ('… flinging a pot of paint in the public's face….'). Whistler sued Ruskin in a celebrated court case and was awarded one farthing damages (a quarter of a penny). This provoked him to write his book

JAMES MCNEILL WHISTLER was as renowned for his radically spare, avant-garde exhibition designs and flamboyant, self-promotional personality as for his artwork. His abrasive and colorful personal style had a profound impact on European and American art. He was the first to declare "Art for Art's Sake," giving his paintings simple names such as "Symphony in White," in the hope that the public would view the entire composition rather than the image the artist suggested by referencing a title. Marking the centenary of his death is the exhibition "Mr. Whistler's Galleries: Avant-Garde in Victorian London," which re-creates "Arrangement in White and Yellow," and "Arrangement in Flesh Colour and Grey," two of Whistler's most famous and influential installations. Both were controversial and radically innovative as they challenged long-standing assumptions about the presentation of art. They featured identically framed canvases, hung widely apart, on plain, lightly colored wallsin moderately sized but elegantly appointed roomsat a time when exhibitions routinely displayed pieces from floor to ceiling with no space between frames.
