James Abbott McNeill Whistler
James Abbott McNeill Whistler was born on July 10, 1834 in Lowell, Massachusetts. Whistler spent part of his childhood and most of his mature life in Europe. After three years at the West Point Military Academy, he went in 1855 to Paris, where he worked for two years in Gleyre’s studio and later became an associate of Fantin-Latour, Legros, and Courbet. He exhibited in the Salon des Refusés in 1863, and throughout his career he associated with his more experimental contemporaries.
Whistler was an extrovert who often allowed fact to become merged with fiction. His litigious nature made him a legend in his own lifetime. In 1896, he become President of the Society of British Artists. Whistler referred to himself as "the butterfly" and used a butterfly motif as his signature. Whistler died in 1903 in London.
“James McNeill Whistler’s position in the history of British art is as paradoxical as his personality: flamboyant dandy and wit, he was also a serious craftsman, tirelessly dedicated to the perfection of his art. Having learned much from his French and English contemporaries, he nevertheless emerged as an isolated figure who attracted followers but established no leading style.”
He died in London on July 17, 1903.

James McNeill Whistler (American, 1834-1903)
Whistler was one of the most controversial artists of the last part of the nineteenth century and delighted in puncturing the stuffiness of the English whose lifes he delighted in enlivening. Yet despite his abrasive personality, his art is among the most subtle of his times. Whistler made it his mission in England, where he spent the latter part of his life, to attack the notion that the artist must portray the subjects upon which he worked recognizably, prefering instead to present the inner harmony that he felt when painting, etching, or making prints. His work moves from realism to Impressionism to Symbolism to Abstraction.

In European society, he later presented himself as an impoverished Southern aristocrat, although to what extent he truly sympathized with the Southern cause during the US Civil War remains unclear.

Art books and other products for artists to buy online Artist Names Whistler, James Abbot McNeill James Abbot McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) was an American painter. Whistler settled in Paris in 1855 where he was particularly influenced by oriental art especially Japanese prints. Whistler moved to England in 1859 and specialised in portraits and landscapes dominated by one or two colours such as ‘The Artist’s Mother’ and ‘Nocturne in Blue and Gold.’ In 1877 Ruskin described one of Whistler’s works as “flinging a pot of paint in the public’s face” and was sued for libel. Although Whistler won the libel case the legal costs ruined him. Whistler was also the author of ‘The Gentle Art of Making Enemies.’ Whistler and His Mother: An Extraordinary Relationship
A detective-like unravelling of Whistler's relationship with his mother, this unprecedented biography coincides with the 2003 Whistler centenary, and the loan of his famous Mother from the Louvre to the Hunterian Art Gallery of Glasgow.

Hunting for Old Paper with James McNeill Whistler
Martha Smith James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) was very interested in effects. He was flamboyant and dressed like a dandy with a broad-brimmed hat, a cane, and a monocle. As a serious artist and printmaker, he knew that the paper, as well as the ink colors, could change the look and mood of a picture, and he liked to experiment. Whistler was fairly consistent in his choices of paper for pastels, watercolors, and drawings. His pastels are most often on brown paper, making the chalk lines look bright and intense. for watercolors he used contemporary paper with a medium weight and texture and a very light color which could also be one of the colors in the painting. His drawings are usually on the smooth off-white paper of ordinary sketch books. However, for prints, Whistler used a variety of papers. Like many artists then and now, he thought that old paper, especially old Dutch paper, was better quality and more beautiful than new paper. One of the purposes in surveying the extensive collection of Whistler prints in the Freer Gallery, was to see how many of them are on old paper and how Whistler identified a sheet of paper as "old." Some of the characteristics of old paper are a somewhat uneven distribution of the fibers, dark stripes beside the chain lines, a watermark, creases, wear, and dirt. Dard Hunter uses the term "antique laid" to describe paper made by hand approximately before 1800, when the design of the paper mold caused the fibers to collect along the chain lines and look like dark stripes.

The Scottish-American History Club Newsletter James McNeill Whistler James McNeill Whistler was one of the most controversial American artists of his time. He added new and restored old dimensions to nineteenth century painting. He was also a witty and caustic writer. He is probably best known for the painting, Portrait of My Mother, which hangs in the Louvre in Paris. Whistler was born in Lowell, Massachusetts, July 10, 1834. His grandfather, John Whistler, was a Scottish major in the British Army under General Burgoyne. He settled in America after the Revolutionary War. His mother, Anna McNeill, was also descended from early Scottish settlers. Her family had been Stuart supporters and came to America in 1746 after the Battle of Culloden. His father, George Washington Whistler, was a graduate of West Point who once led a surveying team that helped establish the boundaries between the United States and Canada. Whistler spent his boyhood in St. Petersburg, Russia, where his father was working as a railroad engineer. When James was 15, his father died and the family returned to the U.S. He attended West Point Military Academy but left in his third year. In 1855 he left the U.S. for Europe and never returned. He studied in Paris and later was honored by many European art societies.

Whistler, James Abbott McNeill
Whistler, James Abbott McNeill (1834-1903). American-born painter and graphic artist, active mainly in England. James Abbott McNeill Whistler was born in in 1834 in Lowell, Massachusetts, the third son of West Point graduate and civil engineer Major George Washington Whistler, and his second wife Anna Matilda McNeill. After brief stays in Stonington, Connecticut, and Springfield, Massachusetts, the Whistlers moved to St. Petersburg, Russia, where the Major served as an civil engineer for the construction of a railroad line to Moscow. James Abbott was aged nine when his family moved to Russia, and he spent several of his childhood years there, studying drawing at the Imperial Academy of Science. He soon became an inveterate traveller. In 1848 he went to live with his sister and her husband in London, and after his father's death the following year the family returned to the United States and settled in Pomfret, Connecticut. Whistler enrolled in the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1851, where he excelled in Robert W. Weir's drawing class. He was dismissed from the academy in 1854 for "deficiency in chemistry", and after brief periods working for the Winans Locomotive Works in Baltimore, and the drawings division of the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey (he learnt etching as a US navy cartographer), resolved to become an artist and moved to Europe permanently in 1855. Whistler settled in Paris first, where he studied at the Ecole Impériale et Spéciale de Dessin, before entering the Académie Gleyre. He made copies in the Louvre, acquired a lasting admiration for

Arrangement in Yellow and Grey: Effie Deans
c. 1876-78; Oil on canvas, 194 x 93 cm; Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam A woman standing, depicted in profile in subtle tints of bluish-grey, brown, ochre and yellow. James McNeill Whistler painted this work around 1876-78. His lover, Maud Franklin, was the artist's model. Whistler painted her full-length, set against a neutral background, evidently applying the paint with brisk strokes of the brush. For Whistler it was not so much a question of accurately portraying his models, as of creating a balanced composition of colours and forms. He would often call his paintings a 'Harmony' or - as here - an 'Arrangement'. The subtitle Whistler gave to the work is a reference to the tragic heroine created by Walter Scott: Effie Deans. The artist incorporated an appropriate quotation from the book in the painting, bottom left.
Effie Deans
Effie Deans is one of the central characters in The Heart of Midlothian , a novel by Sir Walter Scott, written in 1818. Effie had been imprisoned on a false charge: accused of having killed her illegitimate child. When an angry crowd stormed the goal, she had an opportunity to escape. But Effie decided to stay. Prison seemed a better prospect than a life of freedom with a tarnished reputation. At the time Whistler painted this portrait a play based on the story of Effie Deans was running at the Albion Theatre in London. Whistler may well have seen the play and been inspired by Effie's tragic fate.
