, artist. When the most famous image in pop art, Warhol's Campbell's Soup Can, was first exhibited in 1962, a nearby gallery displayed actual soup cans with the sign, "Get the real thing for 29 cents." Underlying the humor was an acknowledgment that Warhol's work threatened the concept of art as serious and transcendent: the artist's intentions, devoid of satire, seemed as cheerfully vacuous as his subject matter. Pop art's celebration of the banal and its unapologetic dismissal of higher aims soon lost their original shock value, yet Warhol, its best-known figure, remained provocative. Born Andrew Warhola in Pennsylvania, he graduated from Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie-Mellon University) in 1949 and moved to New York City, where he became a prize-winning commercial artist. His development as a fine artist began with wry, delicate drawings and culminated in the hard-edged graphic style that became instantly and ubiquitously recognizable. A solo show at New York's Stable Gallery in 1962 brought overnight fame. Calling his studio the Factory, Warhol used the glib impersonality of silk screen to produce mass market images by mass market means. His characteristic repetition of subjects—rows of Marilyn Monroes and stacks of soup cans—mimicked the effect of media saturation. He identified America's vacant icons with his paintings of Coke bottles and Brillo pads and the lure of the meretricious in his celebrity portraits of Elvis Presley, Elizabeth Taylor, and others. Warhol's painting mirrored American consumer society but declined to judge it; any indictment of twentieth-century life was in the eye of the beholder. Even the disturbing "disaster" pictures of electric chairs, suicides, and car crashes suggest no more than the fascination of grisly tabloid scenes.

Warhol, Andy (as artist) (1928-1987) Andy Warhol is best remembered as the avatar of Pop Art. A child of the advertising age, he began his career as a commercial illustrator in the late 1950s. Even his first major appearance as an artist in 1961 was commercial: five paintings as backdrop in a display window at New York's Bonwit Teller department store. Born Andrew Warhola, Jr. on August 6, 1928 into a working-class family in Forest City, Pennsylvania, Warhol attended art school at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh. He moved to New York in 1949, where he changed his named to Andy Warhol and made friendships with Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg. Sponsor Message.
Warhol's work needs to be seen as part of the contentious pluralism in the arts that characterized the early 1960s, as artists joined the assault on conventional pieties and prejudices. In 1966 Time magazine warned the public that Pop Art threatened "normal" masculinity because it insisted on reducing art to the "trivial," by which

"In the future, everyone will be famous for 15 minutes."
The name Andy Warhol is synonymous with Pop Art. Clearly the most important and influential artist of the past quarter century, Warhol maintained a level of creativity already legendary before his untimely death in 1987. Starting out as a technically innovative commercial artist in the world of New York advertising, in the early 1960s Warhol began adapting the commercial process of silkscreening to the world of fine art and created iconic masterpieces such as Marilyn Monroe, Ads and Myths, among his most famous images. Warhol took ideas and images directly from the mass media, from the 1960s cultural revolution, television, movies, advertising, and photojournalism. Painter, graphic artist, manager of a rock band and filmmaker, Warhol had a huge influence on subsequent generations of artists. His original and graphic works are found in major museums worldwide, and today are more widely sought-after than ever before.

Portrait of the week by Jonathan Jones in The Guardian: Saturday Review , 2nd. September, 2000, page 5. "Marlon is a sex god. Specifically, he is Warhol's sex god. There's an acknowledgement in this painting of the true nature of cinematic spectatorship; pure desire. Warhol's own films, which were his main work by the time he produced this portrait, are full of rapt sexual looking. Here, the phallic bike and the arrogant but tender look of Brando's large, soft face and open lips emphasise sexual availability; in the context of 60s Manhattan he is wearing an explicitly gay form of dress. This sexually ambiguous potential was already there at the core of Brando's performance: Elia Kazan, Brando's director in A Streetcar Named Desire, noted Brando's 'soft, yearning girlish side'."

Warhol was born in Pittsburgh Warhol gave various dates for his birth, but the correct one is August 6, 1928, based on a birth certificate that was filed late in order to qualify him for college and his certificate of baptism According to one of his superstars, MARY WORONOV, Andy was dyslexic. Wayne Koestenbaum also claimed that Warhol was dyslexic in his biography on the artist. However, there is no medical evidence to support this. When he graduated from high school in 1945 (at the age of sixteen), Warhol ranked 51 in a class of 278 , which would be quite a high ranking for somebody with dyslexia in the 1940s. DECEMBER 16, 1934: LOUIS WALDON IS BORN IN MODESTO, CALIFORNIA. (IMDB) APRIL 9, 1936: VALERIE JEAN SOLANAS IS BORN. Valerie was born in Ventnor, New Jersey. She later became famous as the person who shot Andy Warhol. During her childhood, Solanas was sexually molested by her father and whipped by her grandfather when she refused to stay in a Catholic High School.
