"I'd prefer to remain a mystery. I never like to give my background and, anyway, I make it all up different every time I'm asked." H e was one of the most enigmatic figures in American art. His work became the definitive expression of a culture obsessed with images. He was surrounded by a coterie of beautiful bohemians with names like Viva, Candy Darling, and Ultra Violet. He held endless drug- and sex-filled parties, through which he never stopped working. He single-handedly confounded the distinctions between high and low art. His films are pivotal in the formation of contemporary experimental art and pornography. He spent the final years of his life walking around the posh neighborhoods of New York with a plastic bag full of hundred dollar bills, buying jewelry and knick knacks. His name was Andy Warhol, and he changed the nature of art forever. GLAMOUR, VOGUE, and HARPER'S BAZAAR. In the mid-'50s he became the chief illustrator for I. Miller Shoes, and in 1957 a shoe advertisement won him the Art Director's Club Medal. Jasper Johns , Roy Lichtenstein, and Robert Rauschenberg and came to be known as Pop Art.

Andy Warhol - biography Born in Pittsburgh, 1928, died 1987
Although Andy Warhol died in 1987, he remains the most contemporary of artists. Warhol's apparently vacant gaze at what he called 'all the great modern things' - soup cans, Marilyn, car crashes - still makes his paintings, films and photographs utterly provocative.
Other Pop artists of the 60s, such as Roy Lichtenstein, painter of dot-screened comic book images, demonstrated painterly sensibilities that belied their fascination with consumer culture. Warhol's transformation of the whole way we think about the high and the low is another matter. He was born in 1928 in Pittsburgh to immigrant parents, Julia and Ondrej Warhola from the Slovak-Polish border, who brought him up as a Catholic. He trained in painting and design at a local college and in 1949 moved to New York where he had a hugely successful first career as a commercial illustrator; he was particularly well known for his footwear illustrations. He wanted, however, to be recognized as an artist. He showed his delicate, jokey drawings in galleries, but to little effect. It was only at the end of the 50s, when he started to paint comic characters, nose-jobs and Coke bottles, that he suddenly found himself at the cutting edge of a new movement, Pop art.
Warhol's first Pop paintings had a drippy Abstract Expressionist style. It was only when he started to paint things flat, dead on, that he found his true style. In 1961 he began his paintings of Campbell's soup cans, a blandly delineated tube repeated over and over with variations in the brand - Chicken Noodle, Split Pea with Ham, Clam Chowder...

Upon graduating in , he moved to New York City and began a successful career in magazine illustration and advertising . He became well-known mainly for his whimsical ink drawings of shoes done in a loose, blotted style. In the , he started to make paintings of famous American products like Campbell's soup cans and Coca-Cola . He switched to silkscreen prints, seeking not only to make art of mass produced items, but to mass produce the art itself. He hired and supervised "art workers" engaged in making prints, shoes, films and other items at his studio, The Factory , located on Union Square in New York City . In the and he mainly made prints of famous people such as Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley . Iconic figures and famous people are a general theme in Warhol's work.

Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Andy Warhol (1927-1987) - originally Andrew Warhola American artist, film maker, the best-known figure to emerge from the Pop Art movement of the 1960s. Warhol eliminated individuality from his works and avoided serious interpretations of his art. He declared that he wanted to be a machine, something which makes, not paintings, but industrial productions. "I'd prefer to remain a mystery. I never like to give my background and, anyway, I make it all up different every time I'm asked. It's not just that it's part of my image not to tell everything, it's just that I forget what I said the day before, and I have to make it all up over again." (Warhol in Mike Wrenn's book Andy Warhol: in his own words Andy Warhol was born Andrew Warhola in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as the son of Czech immigrants. His father, Andrej, who travelled much on business trips, died when Warhol was 13. According to Warhol's mother Julia, he had drank poisoned water. Warhol had three nervous breakdowns during his childhood. He suffered from the nervous disorder St. Vitus' dance, uncontrolled shaking, had a blotchy skin, and was taunted as Spot by his schoolmates. Warhol studied art at the Carnegie Institute of Technology and worked as an advertising draughtsman and illustrator in New York. The film director Emile de Antonio encouraged him to start as a free artist - Antonio considered commercial art real art and he also helped such painters as Jasper Johns and Bob Rauschenberg. Roy Lichtenstein's works Warhol had seen in the late 1950s and he was surprised that somebody else dealt with same ideas.

I'd prefer to remain a mystery. I never like to give my background and, anyway, I make it all up different every time I'm asked. Isn't life just a series of images that change as they repeat themselves? I broke something today, and I realized I should break something once a week...to remind me how fragile life is. Andy Warhol
