Throughout history, artists have shown communication technologies in their artworks. The depiction of a book can illustrate its function as an educational tool, a letter can represent emotions, and maps can refer to a desire to explore unknown worlds. By the 17th century, these items were easily recognized by an artist's viewing public. From the beginning of the century, communication between far-away places was possible and writing letters had become almost commonplace. Artists in this period (referred to as the Baroque for lack of a better term) depicted people reading books and letters. The letter became a recognized convention alluding to love and many artists, including Jan Vermeer, used this convention in their paintings. Vermeer's art has been difficult to analyze because of a lack of documentation. He did not produce any preparatory drawings or prints that we know of, and the only contemporary references to his works are seen in inventories of his time. Because so little is known about the artist's life and working methods, scholars have put forth theory after theory to try and explain the motives and methods of Vermeer's works. But unless new evidence is discovered, it is likely that Vermeer's life and works will remain largely a mystery. It is thought that he did not sell one of his paintings; there survive few contemporary references to his works and he seems to have died in poverty. Over half the paintings attributed to him were in his house at the time of his death. Vermeer's use of light gave his paintings a silent clarity, the sensation of a moment preserved, of recording that quality of simply existing. His choice of subjects was undramatic; typically a scene of complete ordinariness. There are only 35 works by Vermeer known to exist. An excerpt from Vermmer The Complete Works by Arthur Wheelock Vermeer employed many devices beyond his expressive use of light, color, and perspective to extend the meanings of his scenes. In a number of works he included objects imbued with symbolic associations. Paintings within his interiors frequently provide commentaries on the scene transpiring before them, as, for example, the Last ludgment hanging within Woman Holding a Balance, or the painting of Cupid holding aloft a card in A Lady Standing at the Virginal, a reference to an image in Otto van Veen's popular emblem book, Amorum Emblemata, 1608, that admonishes the reader to have but one lover. Vermeer, in fact, frequently painted figures playing music, exploring in these works themes of love and harmony so often associated with musical instruments. Similarly, he used maps, letters, pearls, and water pitchers as focal points within his compositions because their symbolic associations were fundamental to the meanings he wished to infuse into them.

Return to Main History Index Jan Vermeer by E.O. Jan Vermeer was a Dutch painter in the 17th century. He was born on October 31, 1632 in a small town called Delft. Though his works were not well known in his time, all thirty-five of his paintings are widely appreciated now. Vermeer is considered one of the great Dutch artists, able to withstand much of the influence of Italy, France and Flanders, giving his painting a unique feeling and look. The Girl With a Pearl Earring The Hague, Mauritshuis This painting has been thought to be one of Vermeer's Daughters. This lovely girl is painted on a dark background, not made with lines, but with color. There is a softness about the picture that emphasizes the contrast in the colors, the blue turban, yellow veil and white collar. This picture has a quality that makes you stop and study. Vermeer was the son of an art dealer and tavern keeper. When his father passed away in 1655, he took over his jobs. He married Catherina Bolnes in 1653 and eventually had 11 children. His job as an art dealer supported his family, but they were continuously in debt. In later years bankruptcy and political troubles of the time ruined his business. There is no record of him ever selling his paintings. In 1662 Vermeer entered an artists guild. He lived in a small, calm world and often used paintings as pawns for his debts. Vermeer did not paint many pictures, but the ones we have give us insights into daily Dutch life, depicting calm scenes, where usually one or two figures are engaged in simple tasks. Many of his paintings depict simply furnished interiors with people involved at simple everyday tasks. While most of his paintings are of indoor scenes, two of his outdoor scenes, "The View of Delft" and "Street in Delft," are some of the best landscape paintings of the 1600's. The realistic looks of Vermeer's paintings help to make them popular with all who see them.

In 1641, Reynier Jansz bought the "Mechelen" house with an adjoining inn on the Grote Markt square in Delft. His father, a weaver and inn keeper, was enrolled in the Guild of Saint Luke as Mr. Constvercoper (master merchant of artworks). Jan Vermeer would see his first paintings in his father's establishment. On April 23, 1653, the civil marriage of Jan Vermeer and Catharina Bolnes was celebrated in the Delft city hall; she was from Gouda and five years his senior. They would have 15 children, 4 of whom died at a young age. On December 29, 1653, Vermeer enrolled as a master painter in the Guild of Saint Luke in Delft. In 1662, Vermeer was elected the Guild's president. On December 16, 1675, Jan Vermeer, a painter by trade, forty-three years old, was entombed in Old Church in Delft. These are the only three documents which have survived: his birth, his marriage and his death certificates. Some stories about his family, inheritance, debts and that is all. This man's masters, models and companions are unknown to us. We do not have a single handwritten line or a self-portrait. Vermeer is not part of art history and has become a ghost which we can only glimpse fleetingly and guess at through the work he left us. At the time of his death, Vermeer left behind eleven children, of which 10 were minors.
