Jan Vermeer
Jan Vermeer produced just 35 –36 paintings in his lifetime, but remains the most respected artists of the European tradition. Most of Vermeer’s paintings are serene, luminous interiors with just one or two figures.
Vermeer grew up in Delft, Holland. He was admitted to the painters’ guild in 1653, and was thereafter allowed to sell his art. He also worked as an art dealer to supplement his income and support his wife and 11 children. WWI resulted in Vermeer losing his business.
Soon after, he died of a stroke at the age of 42, leaving his family bankrupt. Vermeer’s paintings were then largely forgotten for nearly 200 years, until 1858 when a French critic began to write admiringly about Vermeer’s work.
In The Geographer (left), Vermeer presents another individual in an interior. This male figure, has intense energy in comparison to the contemplative women from other compositions. The flow of light from left to right brings alive the canvas. The flow is accentuated compositionally by the massing of objects on the left. The light spills into the open area on the right, casting shadows. Vermeer adjusted his figure to provide a more active stance. A detailed study canvas revealed that the geographer had originally looked down with his dividers also pointed down.

20. JAN VERMEER & THE CAMERA OBSCURA
Dutch artists like jan vermeer would have had access to the devices It seems possible that jan vermeer used a camera obscura as an artistic aid,
http://www.csun.edu/~hcarh001/496/cameraobscurapaper.html
Art historians have debated for decades whether or not Jan Vermeer used a camera obscura to compose and paint his works. The issue is still unresolved and will probably remain that way, largely due to lack of documentation. Very little is known about Vermeer's life and even less is known about his working methods. No notebooks, letters, or preparatory drawings have been found that might shed some light on the use of optical devices, such as the camera obscura, by Dutch artists in the seventeenth century.1 The Dutch artists' interest in optical devices grew out of the interests of their society as a whole. Dutch pictures describe every aspect of human life, from the natural world around them to the texture of a piece of fabric. Naturally, artists would be interested in any instrument or tool that would aid them in representing the world as faithfully as possible.2 The earliest camera obscuras were simply a dark room with a ray of light entering through a small hole in one wall. An image of an outside object would be projected onto the wall opposite the light source. By the middle of the sixteenth century, Giovanni Battista della Porta had suggested that artists could make use of the camera obscura3 and portable versions of the optical device were produced by the 1650s.4 A standard eighteenth century example of the device would have a double convex lens and a mirror placed inside a small box. The artist would then stand with his back to the subject and place his head and hands into the enclosure, keeping out as much light as possible. An image of the object to be drawn was reflected off the mirror and through the lens onto the bottom of the camera obscura. The artist could then focus and trace the image of the original subject onto a piece of paper placed at the bottom of the enclosure.5
