THE ART OF THE LATE 19TH CENTURY
Impressionism and Post Impressionism In 19th-century France the confirmation of an artist's success was acceptance at the annual Salon, a state-sponsored exhibition of paintings. The accepted paintings tended to be conservative if not downright dull. Salon paintings of the period typically contained a knight in armor, a group of cardinals, some tropical vegetation, or a medieval feast with every dish shown in meticulous detail. In 1863 the Salon rejected four thousand paintings, which caused such an uproar among the rejected painters and their supporters that they formed their own exhibition—“Salon des Refuse’s.” Among the painters in the “refused” show was Edouard Manet. Manet broke all the rules. He took a fresh look at how light strikes a subject, concentrating on brilliant highlights and deep shadow, all but eliminating the middle transitional tones. During the years following Manet’s sensation at the Salon des Refuse’s, young French artists increasingly sought alternatives to the Salon. One group looked to Manet as their philosophical leader. The group formed in 1874 and staged private showings until 1886. Because of the diversity of their works, the group had a hard time identifying their style. Then a critic, after seeing a paining by Claude Monet (a member of the group) entitled Impression: Sunrise, dubbed the artists “impressionists.” The group adopted the name; their work was known thereafter as Impressionism.

Seurat, Georges
Georges Seurat (1859-1891), a Parisian, was a sculptor before studying at the School of Fine Arts. Becoming interested in the scientific aspects of light, he experimented with black and white drawings for several years before moving to the study of colour. His 1885 painting, La Grande Jatte, took more than 60 sessions - in contrast to the Impressionists who completed a picture in a single sitting. His style is sometimes inaccurately called Pointillism (his colour dots may be any shape and size, not pin-points), and is more properly neo-impressionism. Seurat died at the age of only 31 from a septic throat, leaving several hundred canvases and drawings. His legacy was his theory of construction through the solidity of light, and for a time Pissarro was greatly influenced by his work. Hornfleur Harbour by Georges Seurat

Death of Seurat
Setu K. Vora*
*New York Weill Cornell Medical Center, New York, New York, USA Suggested citation for this article "A sudden stupid sickness carried him off in a few hours when he was about to triumph: I curse providence and death." Art critic Jules Christophe, writing after the death of Seurat in La Plume, September 1, 1891 Born in Paris on December 2, 1859, Georges Pierre Seurat was only 31 when he died on March 29, 1891. In his short but productive life, this renowned painter founded a new art movement, neoimpressionism or pointillism. He is most famous for his work A Sunday on La Grande Jatte (1884), now at The Art Institute of Chicago. Art historian Richard Thompson puts Seurat's success in perspective: the 1880s were recognized by contemporaries as a decade of great excitement and innovation and are regarded today as one of the most salient periods of esthetic change. To have forged a new visual language in such challenging circumstances, while only in one's late 20s, was a remarkable achievement ( Seurat's early demise and the 1990s reemergence in Russia and neighboring countries of diphtheria, the infectious disease that probably killed him, invite closer examination of the circumstances that surround his death. The diseases affecting many of Seurat's contemporaries have been well documented, including the neuropsychiatric illness of van Gogh (
