Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 3 items Seurat, Georges (1859-1891), French painter, who with fellow artist Paul Signac originated the influential theory and practice of neoimpressionism. Seurat was born in Paris and trained at the ‰cole des Beaux-Arts. He rejected the soft, irregular brushstrokes of impressionism in favor of pointillism , a technique he developed whereby solid forms are constructed by applying small, close-packed dots of unmixed color to a white background. Many artists imitated Seurat's method, but, except in the work of Signac, his technique remained unequaled in its perfect blending of colors. Seurat derived many of his theories about painting from his study of contemporary treatises on optics. His scientific bent was also evident in his work habits, which included fixed hours and the meticulous systematization of his technique. In 1884 Seurat completed Bathers at Asni¨res (The National Gallery, London), a scene of boys in the Seine River and the first of six large canvases that would constitute the bulk of his life's work. In this and subsequent paintings, he continued the impressionist tradition of depicting holiday outings and entertainments. He departed from impressionist style, however, in his precise application of paint and in the suggestion of depth and volume in his scenes. His masterpiece

From Other Guides Impressionism: A Brief History Georges Seurat Elsewhere on the Web Art of Monet Georges Seurat Essay Often artists admire the final result of a Master's development without recognizing the years of exploration and experimentation that preceded the achievement of that style. While we might try to imitate artists of earlier generations, achieving the same degree of success within our own work, without understanding the principles and techniques of the painter, is virtually impossible.

Imagine, Renoir said, Veronese's Marriage at Cana done in petit point. I cannot imagine it, but neither can I imagine Seurat's pictures painted in broad or blended strokes. Like his choice of tones, Seurat's technique is intensely personal. But the dots are not simply a technique; they are a tangible surface and the ground of important qualities, including his finesse. Too much has been written, and often incorrectly, about the scientific nature of the dots. The question whether they make a picture more or less luminous hardly matters. A painting can be luminous and artistically dull, or low-keyed in color and radiant to the mind. Besides, bow to paint brightly is no secret requiring a special knowledge of science. Like Van Gogh , Seurat could have used strong colors in big areas for a brighter effect. But without his peculiar means we would not have the marvelous delicacy of tone, the uncountable variations within a narrow range, the vibrancy and soft luster, which make his canvases, and especially his landscapes, a joy to contemplate. Nor would we have his surprising image-world where the continuous form is built up from the discrete, and the solid masses emerge from an endless scattering of fine points - a mystery of the coming-into-being for the eye. The dots in Seurat's paintings have something of the quality of the black grains in his

    Georges Seurat
    Birth Year : 1859
    Death Year : 1891
Country : France Georges Seurat was born in Paris of a comfortably situated middle-class family. He attended school in Paris until he was seventeen and then studied sculpture before being admitted to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts for the study of painting. His training was extremely academic and included a great deal of copying of such masters as Ingres at the Louvre, Seurat, however, read widely during his Beaux-Arts days and became interested in scientific theories on the uses and effects of color and light. He began to explore the aspects of light in black and white drawings in 1880, and worked steadily on this theory until 1882. By nature as much a scientist as an artist, Seurat could not accept Monet Pissarro (who eventually abandoned the method as too precise for his temperament), Cross, Angrand, Dubois-Pillet, and the Belgians van de Velde and van Rysselberghe. His theories of construction through solidity of light were also highly important to later artists. Georges Seurat Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, A

But before committing himself to become an artist, Seurat left to join a military service in Brest. While in Brest, he painted several paintings of the sea and beaches. In 1880, he went back to Paris to study more art with Lehmann. On Easter morning, when Seurat was at the age of 32, just before Madeleine was about to have their second child, Seurat died from meningitis. Seurat was influenced by many artists. Including Rembrandt, Francisco de Goya, Ingres and Delacroix. These are very few of the artists Seurat was influenced by. I think Seurat did a lot for the art world, like discovering pointillism and helping lead the impressionists. I find him very talented for that stage of art.

Seurat was born in Paris on December 2, 1859, in Paris. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1878 and 1879. While at the institute, the young Seurat was strongly influenced by works of Rembrandt and Francisco de Goya. A private man, Seurat after he was an established artist, would produce one large canvas a year for a total of seven monumental paintings. Along with this he produced 60 smaller paintings. He was very regimented, spending his winters in Paris and his summers on France's northern coast. In 1891, his life was cut short suddenly at the age of 31 in Paris, but even in this short time, his impact on the world of art will withstand the ages. CANNOT FIND WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR? Georges-Pierre Seurat was born on Dec. 2, 1859, in Paris. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1878 and 1879. His teacher was a disciple of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres . Young Seurat was strongly influenced by Rembrandt and Francisco de Goya.
After a year of military service at Brest, Seurat exhibited his drawing Aman-Jean at the official Salon in 1883. Panels from his painting Bathing at Asnieres were refused by the Salon the next year, so Seurat and several other artists founded the Societe des Artistes Independants. His famous canvas Sunday Afternoon on the Island of the Grande Jatte was the centerpiece of an exhibition in 1886. By then Seurat was spending his winters in Paris, drawing and producing one large painting each year, and his summers on France's northern coast. In his short life Seurat produced seven monumental paintings, 60 smaller ones, drawings, and sketchbooks. He kept his private life very secret, and not until his sudden death in Paris on March 29, 1891, did his friends learn of his mistress, who was the model for his painting Young Woman Holding a Powder Puff.
