the Golden Ratio
Georges Seurat lived in France between 1859 and 1891, and is known as the founder of the group of Neo-Impressionist painters. Look closely at his paintings. Can you see that he used tiny brushstrokes of contrasting colours? They are almost too small to see when you look at the whole picture, but this technique, called pointillism makes his paintings shimmer with brilliance!

Oil on canvas, 81 x 120 in; Art Institute of Chicago Seurat studied colour theories and linear structures throughout his life as an artist. One of the structures he was fond of is known as the golden ratio The golden ratio is known by a few different names, such as: The Golden Ratio. The Golden Mean. Phi. The Divine Section. The Golden Section. The Golden Cut. The Golden Proportion. The Divine Proportion. Most of all, mathematicians call it

Art Gallery About Georges Seurat S eurat, Georges , French painter, who with fellow artist Paul Signac originated neoimpressionism. Born in Paris, the son of a bailiff took drawing lessons from 1875 and later copied works in museums. In 1878/79 he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts, and read works on color theory. After military service in 1880 he settled in Paris. In 1883 a large drawing was accepted by the Salon, and he began a large painting, an open-air scene, in the pointillist, or divisionist manner. In 1884 he met Signac and, with other likeminded artists, the Society of Independent Artists was founded to hold its own exhibitions. He rejected the irregular brushstrokes of impressionism in favor of pointillism, a technique he developed. Many artists imitated Seurat's method, but his technique remained almost unrivaled in its blending of colors. In 1884 Seurat completed Bathers at Asnières (The National Gallery, London), the first of six large canvasses that would constitute the bulk of his life's work. In 1885 he worked on the Paris Seine island Grand Jatte and in Grancamp on the coast of Normandy. He met Pissarro , who followed his style. In 1886 Seurat aroused great attention at the VIII Impressionists Exhibition with his masterpiece

THE QUIET EXPERIMENTER
Georges-Pierre Seurat was born in Paris on 2 December 1859, the son of comfortably-off parents. His father, a legal official, was a solitary man with a taciturn and withdrawn manner which his son also inherited. At every available opportunity, Antoine-Chrisostome took leave of his family and disappeared to his villa in the suburbs to grow flowers and say mass in the company of his gardener; he was only at home on Tuesdays. Suerat's mother was quiet and unassuming, but it was she who gave some warmth and continuity to his childhood.
The family apartment was on the Boulevard de Magenta, close to the landscaped pleasure garden the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont, where young Georges and his mother spent much of their spare time. Such places, and the people who frequented them, were to become the subject of some of his greatest paintings. THE HANDSOME STUDENT As a young man Seurat was tall and handsome with "velvety eyes" and a quiet, gentle voice. Reserved and dignified in dress as well as manner, he was always neatly and correctly turned out: one friend described him as looking like a floor-walker in a department store, while the sophisticated and sharp-tongued Edgar Degas nicknamed him "the notary". He was serious and intense - preferring to spend his money on books rather than on food or drink - but his most pronounced characteristic was his secretiveness.

Artists Georges Seurat Born 1859, Died 1891
Painter, Draftsman
French
The child of comfortably wealthy parents, Georges Seurat did his first professional training in 1878 at the École des Beaux-Arts under a pupil of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. He exhibited once at the Salon but showed his work more frequently in the Salon des Indépendants and with Les XX, Brussel's avant-garde exhibition society. Despite his reclusive habits, Seurat helped to establish a Postimpressionist group in 1887. Seurat was looking for "something new, an art entirely my own." By studying the science and aesthetics of perception, light, and color, he attempted systematically to re-create nature's luminosity. In the technique he preferred to call "divisionism," Seurat juxtaposed touches of unmixed color for optical mixing by the viewer's retina. "[L]et the hand be numb, but let the eye be agile, perspicacious, cunning," wrote critic Félix Fénéon, calling the technique "pointillism," a term Seurat deplored. From 1886 on, Seurat explored scientific theories on color, contrast, and perception to evoke emotions visually. Seurat even experimented when he was not using color; in his Conté-crayon drawings, for instance, the artist renounced line in favor of large, velvety masses of dark merging with middle tones and luminous highlights created by blank paper.

Un dimanche après-midi à l'Ile de la Grande Jatte
1884-86; "Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte"; Oil on canvas, 81 x 120 in; Signed, bottom right; Art Institute of Chicago, Helen Birch Bartlett Collection The question has been asked whether Seurat's great work should be regarded as the necessary outcome of Impressionist ideas or as deliberately anti-Impressionist, and an answer might be that it contains elements of both. In pursuing the analysis of colour, Seurat carried on, though in more systematic fashion, what Monet and Pissarro had been doing. The division of colour was scarcely new, though the primary colours were more scientifically defined by the range he based on the spectrum; but he added to this divisionism or pointillism an equally elaborate and scientifically considered treatment of line in order to attain a harmonious unity of composition, which was distinct from the Impressionist aim of suggesting light, atmosphere and movement. The difference is more readily perceptible in a figure composition as here than in landscape. The men, women and children enjoying the sun in the public park on the island of La Grande Jatte in the Seine have the sort of fixity that a moving film acquires when it comes suddenly to a halt; they are frozen in their various attitudes. As a preliminary, Seurat made a number of oil sketches on the spot in a free and indeed Impressionist style. The finished work was intentionally different. The technique used is so interesting that it is apt to gain exclusive attention. One becomes absorbed in the geometric order that Seurat has imposed on the scene and this certainly is an opposite value to that of Impressionism. Pissarro

Georges Seurat art prints and posters
Dot-to-dot painter and part-time swimming baths attendant, Georges Seurat was born into a Parisian middle class family but, rather than following in his estate agent father's footsteps or having babies like his mum, he went off to art school and got interested in scientific colour theory. After tragically becoming addicted to the cake decorations known as 'hundreds and thousands', he began expressing his inner turmoil by painting in the manner that would eventually become known as Pointillism, but he preferred to call Divisionism. Some sad soul with nothing better to do also went to the trouble of describing Georges as a Neo-Impressionist because, instead of responding to subject matter in the visceral way that Monet and Renoir favoured i.e. leaping around, shouting at it, smothering it in big wet kisses, Georges went for a more cerebral and controlled, if not to say cold and calculating, approach. He would study his intended subject very carefully then return to his studio and spend months doing hundreds of preparatory sketches and enormous sums in an attempt to work out exactly how many of the exciting little coloured dots that he loved so dearly it would take to fill one of his giant canvases, often losing count at a crucial moment when his friend Paul Signac called by for a game of connect four, then having to start all over again. This is probably why he only managed to complete just six large but stunning figure compositions in his entire life, although dying of diphtheria at 31 didn't exactly help his score. Georges' rare and beautiful works are cherished the world over and originals and reproductions hang in some of the most esteemed homes, business premises and optician's waiting-rooms in the world.

Synopsis: This cinematic portrait explores the life and work of George Seurat (1859-1891), one of the most influential artists of the Post Impressionist generation. Highlighted by conversations with modern artists Henry Moore and Bridget Riley, this program provides a fresh look at the creator of the pointillist technique. Seurat's revolutionary style, the application of paint in small dots to create light and form, coupled with his masterful draftsmanship made this artist a force to be reckoned with, then as well as now. On The Series: This series provides us with a double treat a close up look at both the lives and works of the world's most famous artists. In some of the programs, art history is made on film, as the artist creates a painting or sculpture before our eyes. We also see the finest examples of the artists' works, often against the backdrop of their favorite settings: Venice, the Southwest American desert, the salons of Paris.
