Renoir, Pierre - Auguste: a biography
Born Feb. 25, 1841, Limoges, France died Dec. 3, 1919, Cagnes) Pierre Renoir's family was poor. His father was a stone mason, and his mother a seamstress. Pierre was one of six children. The Renoir family moved early to Paris, and Pierre was apprenticed at thirteen to paint porcelain. He enrolled in the school of fine arts at 21. At this time, he was working in the studio of Gleyre with Sisley, Bazille and Monet . Renoir became a leading member of the Impressionists who met at the Café Guerbois. Renoir underwent much financial hardship, but began to achieve success as a portrait painter in the late 1870s. He had 'travelled as far as Impressionism could take me' and, after a visit to Italy in 1881-1882, began to inject a greater sense of solidarity in his work The change in attitude is seen in The Umbrellas (below) , which was evidently begun before the visit to Italy and finished afterwards; the two little girls on the right are painted with the feathery brush-strokes characteristic of his Impressionist manner, but the figures on the left are done in a crisper and drier style, with duller coloring. Renoir's subjects: pretty children, lovely women, beautiful scenes, flowers, have direct and unapologetic appeal "why shouldn’t art be pretty," he said, "there are enough unpleasant things in the world." His images, such as the Bathers and the Luncheon of the Boating Party are gloriously satisfying, and conjure up a lost world, full of sparkling colour and light. Here are delightful, intimate scenes of the French middle class at leisure in the country or at cafes and concerts in Paris. He was one of the great worshippers of the female form: `I never think I have finished a nude until I think I could pinch it.'

Pierre Auguste Renoir, a French impressionist painter, was noted for his radiant, intimate paintings, particularly of the female nude. Recognized by critics as one of the greatest and most independent painters of his period, Renoir is noted for the harmony of his lines, the brilliance of his color, and the intimate charm of his wide variety of subjects. Unlike other impressionists he was as much interested in painting the single human figure or family group portraits as he was in landscapes; unlike them, too, he did not subordinate composition and plasticity of form to attempts at rendering the effect of light.
At the age of 13 Renoir began painting flowers on dishware at a porcelain factory and later painted fans and screens. In 1862 he entered the studio of Charles Gleyre (1808-74) and became friends with Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley, who shared his inclination to take up painting outdoors. By the time (1869) that he and Monet worked together at La Grenouillere, on the Seine, Renoir had developed a delicate touch and vibrant brushwork that were distinctly his own.

Pierre Auguste Renoir BACK
Renoir worked closely with Monet during the 1860's, painting many similar scenes. While Monet fixed his attentions on the ever-changing patterns of nature, Renoir was particularly entranced by people and often painted friends and lovers. Renoir always took a simple pleasure in whatever met his good-humored attention, but refused to let what he saw dominate what he wanted to paint. Right through his career, Renoir's work never reveals the seriousness of a Monet or Cezanne painting. Renoir loved women and would boast that he painted with a part of his male anatomy. He shocked his teacher Gleyre by stating,
'If painting were not a pleasure to me I should certainly not do it'.
An excerpt from Renoir by Guy Jennings:
The development of Impressionism was temporarily halted by the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian war in 1870. The group became scattered. Bazille was killed fighting at Beaune la Roland; Monet, Pissarro and Sisley sought refuge in England - the latter was of British descent, and his family had become bankrupt as a result of the war - and Renoir himself joined the Cuirassiers. He saw no action, being posted to the remote spot of Pau in the Basses-Pyrenees, but he had little time for painting On being discharged he returned to Paris, and was one of the few painters to remain there during the troubled period or the Commune. With his friend and benefactor Bazille now gone, Renoir found life far from easy, but in 1873 a turning point came when the dealer Paul Durand-Ruel began to buy his work, enabling him to rent his first studio, at 35 rue St Georges. He continued to send paintings to the Salon, among them his Diana, classical in subject matter and concept but rather more modem in handling. This, like most of his entries, was rejected, and his friends Monet and Pissarro were also in general unsuccessful. Both Monet and Renoir did, in fact, have paintings accepted in 1865 and 1866, but simply being hung in the Salon did not necessarily guarantee success - an unknown artist could find his work placed in a dim corner or so high up on a wall as to render it to all intents and purposes invisible.

Early Career Diane Chasseresse (1867), while Manet's can be seen in the flat tones of Alfred Sisley and His Wife (1868). Still, both paintings reveal a sense of intimacy that is characteristic of Renoir's personal style.
Odalisque (1870)
The 1860s were difficult years for Renoir. At times he was too poor to buy paints or canvas, and the Salons of 1866 and 1867 rejected his works. The following year the Salon accepted his painting Lise Odalisque Renoir and Impressionism In 1869, Renoir and Monet worked together at La Grenouillère, a bathing spot on the Seine. Both artists became obsessed with painting light and water. According to Phoebe Pool (1967), this was a decisive moment in the development of Impressionism, for "It was there that Renoir and Monet made their discovery that shadows are not brown or black but are coloured by their surroundings, and that the 'local colour' of an object is modified by the light in which it is seen, by reflections from other objects and by contrast with juxtaposed colours." The styles of Renoir and Monet were virtually identical at this time, an indication of the dedication with which they pursued and shared their new discoveries. During the 1870s, they still occasionally worked together, although their styles generally developed in more personal directions.

Biography

Born in Limoges (FR)
French painter originally associated with the Impressionist movement. His early works were typically Impressionist snapshots of real life, full of sparkling colour and light. By the mid-1880s, however, he had broken with the movement to apply a more disciplined, formal technique to portraits and figure paintings, particularly of women (e.g. , Bathers, 1884-87).
Renois is perhaps the best-loved of all the Impressionists, for his subjects-pretty children, flowers, beautiful scenes, above all lovely women-have instant appeal, and he communicated the joy he took in them with great directness. `Why shouldn't art be pretty?', he said, `There are enough unpleasant things in the world.' He was one of the great worshippers of the female form, and he said `I never think I have finished a nude until I think I could pinch it.' One of his sons was the celebrated film director Jean Renoir (1894-1979), who wrote a lively and touching biography (Renoir, My Father) in 1962.

His father decided to move to Paris in 1845, where the young Renoir was sent to work at the age of 13 as an apprentice to a painter in a china-ware factory, where he learned to imitate the great Rococo painters of the 18th century. Attracted to the Louvre where he studied the paintings of the old masters, he earned some money by copying 18th century paintings. He attended evening classes, and at the age of 21 he became a member of the studio of Charles Gleyre, where he made friends with many of his contemporaries, including Claude Monet Alfred Sisley and Frederic Bazille Renoir was influenced, during his first years, by the Barbizon School, as well as Gustave Courbet . However in common with his contemporaries, Renoir was disenchanted with the formal tuition of the studios, and the forest of Fontainbleau, was a working ground for him. His early paintings were not appreciated neither by the critics nor the public. However this was common for all the impressionist artists, and it was not before a decade after the start of their movement, that their revolutionary approach had become accepted. Renoir was much more concerned with human form rather than nature and landscape, which was

    Birth Year : 1841
    Death Year : 1919
Country : France Pierre Auguste Renoir, the genius and traditionalist of the Impressionist movement, and a follower in the grand line of Titian, Tintoretto Rubens Fragonard, Delacroix , Courbet, Manet , and Ingres , was born in Limoges, the son of a tailor. Renoir began his career by painting porcelain plates, fans, and window blinds, before entering the Académie Gleyre in 1862. His meeting with Monet Sisley , and Bazille and their removal to Fountainbleau to paint from nature brought him into the heart of the Impressionist movement, although his paintings before 1870 were in the classical tradition and show the influences of Courbet Corot Delacroix , and Manet . Between 1870 and 1880, Renoir was a pure Impressionist, painting with the characteristic touches of broken color and in exquisite hues. Unlike his companions, he preferred figure painting to landscapes and created portraits and scenes of social life in a manner that is at once joyously alive, tender, and sensuous. By 1880, Renoir felt that he could go no further as an Impressionist, and in 1881 he went to Italy, staying at first in Venice, next in Rome where he studied Raphael 's frescoes, and finally in Naples and Pompeii. Upon his return to France, Renoir decided that he knew nothing about drawing or the rendering of form and began to copy the works of

    Abstract
The author states that in the painting "The Luncheon of the Boating Party", Renoir shows the splendor and joy of everyday life. This painting marks the culmination of Renoir's Impressionist period. This painting was a huge undertaking for the artist. The author describes in detail the new method of combining colors that Renoir used to give the feeling of natural brilliant light.
    From the Paper:
"A prime example of the artist's ability to capture the joy of a single moment on canvas can be seen in The Luncheon of the Boating Party. This painting depicts the carefree gathering of French revelers, having just concluded a convivial meal. Renoir recreates the beauty of the river scene with the posing of models, all friends of the artist; his use of vibrant color applied in small brush strokes to recreate natural light and a richness in texture, and his use of contrasting white with black. All these elements come together to show one of life's greatest pleasures; the joy of eating and drinking with friends." Term Paper #30439
