Holland, 1606-69 Rembrandt van Rijn ( rem -brant van ryne ) was born in the Dutch city of Leiden. As a child, his only interest in school was drawing and painting, so his parents took him out of school and apprenticed him to a local painter when he was only 14. He developed a style of using light values to emphasize what he thought was important, and dark shadows to make the rest of the work subordinate.
In 1631, Rembrandt moved from Leiden to Amsterdam, where he became very successful painting portraits. He eventually married Saskia, a woman from a wealthy family. Unfortunately, he spent most of his income and never gave a thought to managing his wealth.
During this successful period of Rembrandt's life, Saskia bore four children, none of whom lived. Finally, in 1641, a son named Titus was born and survived, but in 1642 Saskia died. She left her fortune to Rembrandt with the condition that he would never marry again. Unable to manage money, Rembrandt lost his fortune. As a result, Rembrandt's work became more personal and expressionistic. Because of these changes, people were no longer anxious to have him paint their portraits.
In 1649, Hendrickje Stoffels came to live with Rembrandt. She and Titus took over the management of Rembrandt's finances. They protected him from creditors. Hendrickje died in 1663, Titus died in 1668, and Rembrandt died in 1669. In spite of his adversities, Rembrandt left more than 600 paintings, 300 etchings, and 2,000 drawings.

Saint Paul
Apostle
His own words, as reported in the Acts of the Apostles, best describe his activities: ". . . I then thought it my duty to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth . . . . many of the saints I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests to do so; and when they were put to death, I cast my vote against them; and oftentimes in all the synagogues I punished them and tried to force them to blaspheme; and in my extreme rage against them I even pursued them to foreign cities " (Acts 26:9-11). One of these cities was Damascus, where Saul wanted to arrest the Christians and bring them back to Jerusalem for trial. The journey there was the most critical of his life; this is his description of it: ". . . as I was on my way and approaching Damascus, suddenly about noon there shone round about me a great light from heaven; and I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, 'Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? And I answered, 'Who are you, Lord? And he said to me, 'I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you art persecuting.' . . . And I said, 'What shall I do, Lord?' And the Lord said to me, 'Get up and go into Damascus, and there you will be told of all that you are destined to do' " (Acts 22:6-10). In this momentous encounter, Saul's life was shattered and re-made. He went to Damascus, was baptized by a holy Christian named Ananias, and then retired to the desert of Arabia to meditate and to prepare himself for his future work.

Rembrandt van Rijn
Rembrandt Harmenz van Rijn, born July 15, 1606 in Leiden, was the son of a miller, Harmen Gerritz van Rijn (1568-1630), and his wife Neeltgen van Zuytbrouck (1568-1640). The youngest son of a least ten children, Rembrandt was not expected to carry on his father's business. Since the family was prosperous enough, they sent him to the Leiden Latin School, where he remained for seven years. In 1620 he enrolled briefly at the University of Leiden, perhaps to study theology. Orlers, Rembrandt's first biographer, related that because "by nature he was moved toward the art of painting and drawing," he left the university to study the fundamentals of painting with the Leiden artist Jacob Isaacsz van Swanenburgh (1571-1638). After three years with this master, Rembrandt left in 1624 for Amsterdam, where he studied for six months under Pieter Lastman (1583-1633), the most important history painter of the day. After returning to Leiden, Rembrandt quickly developed a reputation as a history painter and portraitist. By 1628, his work, and that of his colleague in Leiden, Jan Lievens (1609-1674), was enthusiastically praised by the secretary to the Prince of Orange, Constantijn Huygens (1596-1674). Huygens admired particularly Rembrandt's uncanny ability to convey feeling through gesture and expression and through dramatic contrasts of light and dark. That same year, Rembrandt, at the age of twenty-two, took on his first pupils, Gerard Dou and Isaac Jouderville (1612-1645/1648). Documents indicate that Jouderville paid Rembrandt one hundred guilders a year to study with him.

  • Paper #006508 :: Rembrandt van Rijn - Buy and instantly download this paper now A look at the life and works of Rembrandt van Rijn and what made him one of the most famous Dutch artists. 2,540 words, 3 sources, MLA, $ 78.95 USD Paper Summary: After providing a brief overview of his life, this paper examines five works that demonstrate something of the range of his extraordinary talent and illuminate his almost preternatural ability to depict the condition of the human heart and soul - whether his own in the many self-portraits he created or in other in the series of studies that made him one of the most popular portrait artists of Amsterdam in his own time. From the Paper: "Rembrandt himself would no doubt have been very pleased to have found out how dominant his own reputation has remained, for he was not an overly shy or modest artist. His life was in fact (especially when he was younger) defined in large measure by his ambition. He wished to be an artist whose work would in time come to rival that of other great Dutch artists such as Peter Paul Rubens. He wished not only to be a fine artist but also a famous one, and while he of course succeeded in achieving the first during his lifetime he in many ways failed to achieve the second. For while he was in demand for many years as a portrait-painter, by the end of his life he had lost many of his former patrons."

    http://www.k12.hi.us/~kapunaha/student_projects/famous_artists/rembrandt.htm
    Rembrandt Van Rijn Biography:
    • Rembrandt was born in 1606 in Holland. He lived to be 63 years old and painted right up to the end of his life. He died in 1669.
    Interesting Facts:
    • He was a Renaissance artist and the best subjects he liked to draw were either self-portraits or portraits of people he knows or is related to. Rembrandt was known as the most accomplished etcher ever. He liked dogs and included them in many of his paintings. He painted over 500 pictures and used light and dark colors. He got paid for his paintings but never seemed to have enough because he was a big spender. He made the people he painted seem alive, even more that a photograph could.
Famous Works: His best etching was " Six's Bridge " which was a landscape. His best painting was the " Syndics of the Drapers Guild ." This painting was of a group of important men whose job it was to make sure that all the cloth made in Amsterdam was made just right. He painted the group of men looking right at you and it was almost like you walked in during their meeting and they stopped to see what you wanted. The men seem friendly and caring. Personal Thoughts: "I feel that Rembrandt had some really great paintings. I wish I could go back in time to see him. His paintings look so real like you are inside of the picture. One day I would like to take a plane and see his paintings and I would like to be like him."

Rembrandt van Rijn on the WWW
Rembrandt (1606-1669), Dutch baroque artist, who ranks as one of the greatest painters in the history of Western art. His full name was Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn. He possessed a profound understanding of human nature that was matched by a brilliant technique-not only in painting but in drawing and etching-and his work made an enormous impact on his contemporaries and influenced the style of many later artists. Perhaps no painter has ever equaled Rembrandt's chiaroscuro effects or his bold impasto. Despite Rembrandt's financial success as an artist, teacher, and art dealer, his penchant for ostentatious living forced him to declare bankruptcy in 1656. These problems in no way affected Rembrandt's work; if anything, his artistry increased. His personal life, however, continued to be marred by sorrow, for his beloved Hendrickje died in 1663, and his son, Titus, in 1668. Eleven months later, on October 4, 1669, Rembrandt died in Amsterdam.

    Rembrandt van Rijn
What would you think of an artist that painted two thousand three hundred paintings in sixty three years? I would say that’s pretty amazing. Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was regarded by many as the greatest painter, in the 1600’s and in Dutch art in general. Rembrandt had a very original, but interesting way of bringing out the main characters in a painting. He had a good family back round. He spent most of his life in Leiden and Amsterdam painting. He was a man of considerable wealth and a respected citizen. Rembrandt had a very interesting life, but why was he so famous?
Rembrandt’s work was very breathtaking, detailed, and centered around the main subject. His back rounds were dark and the subject was light and bright as in the painting Jesus’ Resurrection. Rembrandt really focuses on the main character. Rembrandt went through a couple different periods in his art. The first period was called the Leyden from 1625 through 1631. The second one was called Baroque period and was ten years after the Leyden period. Much of Rembrandt’s work was inspired by Italian artist Michelangelo. Some elements of Rembrandt’s paintings are dramatic, violent, and seductive. Rembrandt was known as the most popular painter in Amsterdam. Rembrandt got most of his paintings from scenes from the Bible such as the Prodigal Son. It is estimated the he painted about 50 or 60 self portraits. In th...
