Rembrandt is acknowledged as the greatest master of the Dutch school. Early Life A miller's son, Rembrandt attended a Latin school and spent part of one year at the Univ. of Leiden, leaving in 1621 to study painting with a local artist, Jacob van Swanenburgh. His most valuable training was received during the six months of 1624 that he spent in the studio of Pieter Lastman in Amsterdam. Lastman's work affected Rembrandt's in his sense of composition and his frequent choice of religious and historical themes. Receptive to many influences at this time, Rembrandt sometimes reflected the dramatic chiaroscuro of Caravaggio in paintings such as

    Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669)
Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn is certainly the most famous of Holland's seventeenth-century painters. He was born in 1606 in Leiden, the fifth son of the miller Harmen Gerritsz. van Rijn. After attending Latin School Latin School This was what the schools of the early Middle Ages founded by bishops or monasteries (and later on by municipalities) were called. In these schools the humanities or liberal arts were taught: grammar, rhetoric, oratory, arithmetic, geometry, astronomy and music. Some of these schools focused on basic reading and writing skills; others offered a kind of secondary education. In the 19th century the Latin School was increasingly replaced by the Gymnasium that also taught Greek; modern languages and the sciences were also taught - subjects that had virtually no place in the curriculum of the Latin School. he registered in 1620 at Leiden University, although he never actually graduated. Rembrandt studied under the Leiden painter Jacob van Swanenburch and under

AN ABRIDGED HISTORY OF EUROPE

Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669)
Life
Rembrandt moved to Amsterdam in 1631; his marriage in 1634 to Saskia van Uylenburgh, the cousin of a successful art dealer, enhanced his career, bringing him in contact with wealthy patrons who eagerly commissioned portraits. An exceptionally fine example from this period is the Portrait of Nicolaes Ruts (1631, Frick Collection, New York City). In addition, Rembrandt's mythological and religious works were much in demand, and he painted numerous dramatic masterpieces such as The Blinding of Samson In contrast to his successful public career, however, Rembrandt's family life was marked by misfortune. Between 1635 and 1641 Saskia gave birth to four children, but only the last, Titus, survived; her own death came in 1642. Hendrickje Stoffels, engaged as his housekeeper about 1649, eventually became his common-law wife and was the model for many of his pictures. These problems in no way affected Rembrandt's work; if anything, his artistry increased. Some of the great paintings from this period are The Jewish Bride The Syndics of the Cloth Guild (1661, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam)

Dutch painter, etcher, and teacher. Rembrandt was one of the most prolific and significant artists in Europe of the 17th century. Between 1629 and 1669 he painted about 60 penetrating self-portraits, many of them used as studies for later paintings. He also painted religious subjects, and produced about 300 etchings and over 1,000 drawings. His major group portraits include The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Tulp The Night Watch chiaroscuro effect and the baroque style, his later work is passionate, psychologically charged, and atmospherically moody.

    Rijn van Rembrandt BACK
Rembrandt studied under Lastman and his earliest major recognition came from Constantijn Huygens, the secretary to the Prince of Orange. He saw Rembrandt as the Dutch answer to Rubens, a local Dutch artist capable of raising the reputation of Dutch painting to the highest level. Rembrandt moved to Amsterdam in 1631 and garnered a host of portraiture commissions. In 1634 he married Saskia, the daughter of a burgomaster. This gave Rembrandt social connections and a hefty dowry. Saskia died while giving birth to Titus to 1642. He would be accused of stealing from her estate. In the 1650's Rembrandt fell into bankruptcy due to lost commissions and the Dutch economy faltering due to the war. He found a young lover named Hendrickje Stoffels would model for a dozen or so of his works. In his late years, Rembrandt increasingly retreated into his lonely studio and, bereft of commissions and always in debt, he painted some of his best works. Rembrandt was the first artist to practice self-portraiture as a speciality. In doing so, he created a medium for self-fashioning that has since inspired many artists. In 1968 a committee of Dutch art historians known as the Rembrandt Research Project took upon itself to distinguish between real Rembrandt paintings and all others. The project has met with less acceptance than anticipated.
An excerpt from Rembrandt's Women by Julia lloyd Williams:
In 1660, after all his possessions had been sold off, Rembrandt entered into a contract for a new art business with Titus and Hendrickje Stoffels, with him as their employee. It made him a dependent painter once again. In contrast to his time in Uylenburgh's shop, however, he would be protected from his creditors. It would have been a way of safeguarding the money earned from the Town Hall project.
