Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn was born on 15th July, 1606, in Leiden, the eighth of nine children of Harmen Gerritszoon van Rijn and his wife, Neeltje van Suijttbroeck. He was the first and the only of their sons whom they sent to the school for Latin. After seven years’ schooling (1613-1620), Rembrandt entered the Philosophical Faculty of Leiden University to study Classics. A short period at the university finished with starting a period of apprenticeship (1622-24) under the Italy-trained painter Jacob Isaacszoon van Swanenburgh. However, the succeeding half-year studies under Pieter Lastman, the Amsterdam artist of historical paintings, influenced Rembrandt’s work much deeper.
In 1625 the 19-year-old Rembrandt returned to Leiden and opened his own studio, which he shared with his friend of the same age, Jan Lievens. Rembrandt executed historical paintings, initially following Lastman’s models: Tobit and Anna The Ass of Balaam Talking before the Angel.

"Rembrandt never visited Italy but by the time he left his native Leyden to settle in Amsterdam in 1631, he had already been exposed to the latest developments in Baroque painting. The Dutch followers of Caravaggio had ensured that the thunderous use of light and shade and dramatic figures filling the picture surface had become familiar, as had the fluid, vigorous brushwork of Rubens and the thirst for grand, painterly illusions. Like Rubens, Rembrandt would have noted that Titian in his late work had gone in search of more reflective moods and discovered a new and glorious freedom in his brushstrokes.

Artists Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn Born 1606, Died 1669
Painter, Draftsman, Engraver
Born to a miller and a baker's daughter, it was said that Rembrandt van Rijn was made of "a different flour." Despite his ambitions, he never visited Italy. After studying locally, he apprenticed with Pieter Lastman in Amsterdam. Lastman imparted to Rembrandt his taste for religious and allegorical subjects and exposed him to Caravaggio's stylistic lessons. But the more profound aspect of Rembrandt's art, the compassion and sympathy for humanity, was Rembrandt's own, present in his sharp, early Baroque style and in his later pictorial symphonies of texture, gesture, and quiet drama. Returning to Leyden around 1624, Rembrandt worked independently and collaborated with Jan Lievensz. He painted varied subjects, including many self-portraits. Around 1631, he moved to Amsterdam, becoming its leading painter and a wealthy man. He began using canvas rather than panel, experimented with paints of different fluidities, and explored etching. His wife's death in 1642 roughly coincided with Bartholomeus van der Helst's introduction of Anthony van Dyck's more ostentatious style, which suited public taste more than Rembrandt's introspection. Refusing to adapt his style to prevailing fashion and nearly bankrupt, Rembrandt moved to a poor section of town with his mistress, Hendrickje Stoffels, and his only living child, Titus, in 1656. Having survived both Hendrickje and Titus, Rembrandt died poor and alone. The pupils of this inspiring teacher included Gerrit Dou, Aert de Gelder, Govaert Flinck, and Nicolaes Maes.

REMBRANDT Harmenszoon van Rijn (b. 1606, Leiden, d. 1669, Amsterdam)
Biography
Rembrandt was born in Leiden on July 15, 1606- his full name Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn. He was the son of a miller. Despite the fact that he came from a family of relatively modest means, his parents took great care with his education. Rembrandt began his studies at the Latin School, and at the age of 14 he was enrolled at the University of Leiden. The program did not interest him, and he soon left to study art - first with a local master, Jacob van Swanenburch, and then, in Amsterdam, with Pieter Lastman, known for his historical paintings. After six months, having mastered everything he had been taught, Rembrandt returned to Leiden, where he was soon so highly regarded that although barely 22 years old, he took his first pupils. One of his students was the famous artist Gerrit Dou. Rembrandt moved to Amsterdam in 1631; his marriage in 1634 to Saskia van Uylenburgh, the cousin of a successful art dealer, enhanced his career, bringing him in contact with wealthy patrons who eagerly commissioned portraits. An exceptionally fine example from this period is the Portrait of Nicolaes Ruts (1631, Frick Collection, New York City). In addition, Rembrandt's mythological and religious works were much in demand, and he painted numerous dramatic masterpieces such as

R embrandt van Rijn was born on July 15, 1606, in Leiden, the Netherlands. His father was a Miller who wanted his son to get an education and achieve professional success, so Rembrandt was sent to the University of Leiden, where he studied science and anatomy; it was there he gained the knowledge of the human anatomy which would serve him during his artist's career. Rembrandt wanted to paint more than anything else, so he left University to study painting under Jacob I. van Swanenburch, learning about Italian Renaissance artists such as Leonardo da Vinci , and Michelangelo Buonarroti , but he was influenced by the work of Michelangelo Merisi Caravaggio, a revolutionary artist known for his unorthodox use of lighting, and the disturbingly erotic manner in he presented his subjects, even biblical figures. A while later, Rembrandt studied under Pieter Lastman in Amsterdam, who taught him the chiaroscuro (light and darkness) technique. Shortly thereafter, Rembrandt returns to Leiden to set up his own studio, beginning work on a series of self-portraits. What sets Rembrandt's style apart from that of Lastman's is his composition; like in the works of Caravaggio, Rembrandt's background composition remains dark, while his subject is illuminated in a manner which makes the image appear nearly three dimensional.

In all, Rembrandt produced around 600 paintings etchings , and 2,000 drawings. He was a prolific painter of self-portraits , producing almost a hundred of them (including some 20 etchings) throughout his long career. Together they give us a remarkably clear picture of the man, his looks, and — more importantly — his emotions, as misfortune and sorrow etched wrinkles in his face. Among the prominent characteristics of his work are his use of chiaroscuro , often using stark contrasts, thus drawing the viewer into the painting; his dramatic and lively scenes, devoid of any rigid formality that contemporary artists often displayed; and his ostensibly deeply felt compassion for mankind, irrespective of wealth and age.

The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Tulp (detail)
M any writers, in attempting to describe the nature of Rembrandt's genius, have compared him to Shakespeare. Roger Fry in The Arts of Painting and Sculpture says that Rembrandt has a unique place in the history of European art because 'he united in his spirit a dramatic and psychological imagination of Shakespearian intensity and an equally great plastic imagination'. It would be contrived and unhelpful to press of the comparison too for; indeed there were radical differences between the philosophies of the two men as G. Knuttel Wzn. points out. Yet Knuttel goes on to say that 'No artist before Rembrandt has researched and understood the human soul and so movingly and convincingly attested to it as Shakespeare'.
Writers tend to reach for Shakespeare's name when describing Rembrandt for several reasons. First, of course, a Titan, in art as in other spheres, can only be compared with another-and there are few of these to choose from. Secondly, and more constructively, the two artists are comparable in the breadth of their understanding and their sympathy for the human condition. Thirdly, and growing out of the last point, they share the quality of universality.

Fast Facts The 17th Century Baroque era in Holland was the Dutch Golden Age, a time of extraordinary prosperity and social solidarity of the merchant class. A flourishing local and international commerce provided the economic key to an envied Dutch standard of living. There was a strong middle-class market for contemporary Dutch art which reflected pleasure in life, good times and the general abundance of products from around the world. e.g. spices, silk, cotton, porcelain. Being predominately Protestant, there were no church commissions given; rather, patronage came from the thriving middle class who bought art in commercial art galleries.
