To see our full collection of Rembrandt van Rijn paintings, Rembrandt Harmenszoon Van Rijn was born in the year 1606 to parents of modest means. His father a prosperous miller and his mother the daughter of a successful baker, yet what they lacked in wealth they made up for with education. Raised as a Calvinist, Rembrandt grew up in the town of Leiden, which was at that time one of the principal artistic and intellectual centers of the country. He was educated along with the nine of his siblings at the Latin School, in Leiden. After his primary education in mathematics, Greek, classical literature, geography and history Rembrandt entered Leiden University. At the university, he largely studied science, and while he enjoyed the anatomy classes, which would later become significant in his artistic career, Rembrandt abandoned his studies to pursue painting. Under the tutelage of Jacob I. van Swanenburch, Rembrandt mastered the basics of painting technique in three years. He then moved to Amsterdam where he continued his education in the studio of Pieter Lastman. Lastman like Swanenburch had spent time in Italy thus the works of the Italian masters and the compositional style of Lastman greatly influenced that of Rembrandt.

Links for : REMBRANDT van Rijn Considered by some sources to be a deeply religious man and by others an unscrupulous cad, Rembrandt was without a doubt one of the greatest painters of all time. Even so, this son of a miller rose to the upper ranks of Dutch society not just on the merits of his talent, but by marrying into wealth. He seems to have adored his wife Saskia (there are a number of portraits of her), but their life together was not without misery; they lost three children before a son, Titus , was born. In ill health, Saskia died a year later. After Saskia's death, Hendrickje Stoffels came to live in Rembrandt's household. Her roles as housekeeper and nurse to the artist's son eventually evolved into that of life companion. Rembrandt never married Hendrickje because he feared that it would violate the provisions of Saskia's will and he would lose the money she had left him. After a career of remarkable success, Rembrandt began to shown signs of burnout. Less and less satisfied with portraiture, he painted more uncommissioned works, particularly those with religious themes. Although this may have brought him spiritual fulfillment, it provided little for him financially. The resulting decline in sales income, as well as his penchant for an extravagant lifestyle, slammed the great master into poverty and forced Titus and Hendrickje to form a company to protect him from his creditors.

His father was a miller who wanted him to follow a learned profession, but Rembrandt left the University of Leiden to study painting. His early interest in line, light and shade, and color shows his fascination with the Italian artists of the time. In 1631 Rembrandt left Leiden for Amsterdam where he became a leading portrait painter (view portrait of Jan Six of 1654) and received many commissions for portraits and religious paintings (view The Feast of Belshazzar of 1635) . Rembrandt also attained fame for his landscapes, while as an etcher he ranked among the best. In 1634, he married Saskia van Uylenburgh who modeled for many of his paintings and drawings. But Rembrandt is also famous for his self-portraits (view self-portrait of 1640) , of which, it is estimated, he produced between 50 and 60. The number of works attributed to Rembrandt varies.
