During the 1930s Soyer's poignant portrayals of New York City's office workers and the unemployed secured his reputation as a major Social Realist. The painting My Friends reflects the shift in Soyer's work of the 1940s from urban environments towards interior scenes. In this work, he has combined two common themes of his oeuvre: intimate studies of solitary women, often nudes, and portraits of fellow artists, reflecting his great affection and admiration for them. In 1941 his show, My Contemporaries and Elders, featured portraits of Raphael himself, his twin Moses Soyer, Chaim Gross, and David Burliuk. All four artists, along with Nicolai Cikovsky, later appeared in My Friends, one of Soyer's largest paintings. Represented in Soyer's studio, from left to right, are Cynthia Brown, Cikovsky, Moses, Burliuk, and the figurative sculptor Gross. Home Back Up Next Raphael Raffaello Sanzio, Italian painter and architect, was born in Urbino in 1483 and died in Rome in 1520. Being a son of Giovanni Santi, author of a famous Chronicle in rime and the head of a successful studio, who was working for the court of Urbino, and as a portraitist for the court of Mantua, the young artist received the first education in his father's studio, which activity continued till the end of the century, even after the death of Giovanni (1494). In 1500 Raphael worked in Citta' di Castello: Stendardo della Trinita' (now in the local Pinacoteca), where he accepted together with Evangelista da Pian di Meleto, collaborator of Giovanni Santi, the order to depict pala of the blessed Nicola da Tolentino for the church Sant'Agostino (its fragments, damaged in 1789, are now in the Pinacoteca Tosio-Martinengo in the city of Brescia, in the National Galleries of Capodimonte in Naples, and in Louvre in Paris). His sensitive, penetrating portrayals include a broad range of city dwellers: Bowery bums, dancers, seamstresses, shoppers, office workers and fellow artists. Historically, Soyer is associated with the social realist artists of the 1930s, whose art championed the cause of social justice. Born in Tombov, Russia in 1899, Soyer emigrated with his family to the United States in 1912. His siblings included a twin brother, Moses, and a brother, Isaac, who became successful artists. After settling with his family in New York City, the young Soyer pursued an art education at Cooper Union from 1914 to 1917, at the National Academy of Design from 1918 to 1922, and intermittently at the Art Students League.
