Raffaello Sanzio (1493-1530)
One of the great Renaissance artists, Raphael Sanzio was born in Urbino, Italy in 1493. His father was a painter and Raphael's first teacher. Raphael's mother died when he was eight years old and his father died three years later, leaving Raphael an orphan. Raphael became a magister (head of a painting school) at age 17. When he was 21, he moved to Florence, the art capital of Europe at the time. It was there that he met and studied with other great artists of the time, including Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo By the time he was 26, Raphael was recognized as one of Italy's most important artists, popular with popes, rich merchants and other leaders as well as ordinary people. Raphael was known to be sweet-natured and agreeablein fact, the opposite in temperament of his peer, Michelangelo. Raphael was not only considered, in his day, to be the greatest painter of all time, he was also an architect and a specialist in Greek and Roman art. Some of his most famous works include "Saint George and the Dragon" (right) and "The Marriage of the Virgin". He died on his 37th birthday of a "high and continuous fever".

Artists Raphael Born 1483, Died 1520
Painter, Draftsman, Architect
Raphael, born Raffaello Sanzio, was crowned the "Prince of Painters" by Giorgio Vasari, a sixteenth-century biographer of artists. From his father, Raphael learned painting; in his native Urbino, he experienced intellectual court life. A year after his father's sudden death, Raphael entered the workshop of Urbino's leading painter at age twelve and quickly surpassed his master. By the age of twenty-one, Raphael had moved to Florence, where he embraced the works of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. In Florence, his many paintings of the Madonna and Child display his characteristic human warmth, serenity, and sublimely perfect figures. Raphael's art epitomized the High Renaissance qualities of harmony and ideal beauty. In four years Raphael's fame led to a summons to Rome from Pope Julius II. As painter to the papal court, his work met with high praise, and he established himself as the most favored artist in Rome. He was commissioned to paint portraits, devotional subjects, and the Pope's private rooms; he also designed tapestries. Raphael was soon placed in charge of all papal projects involving architecture, paintings, decoration, and the preservation of antiquities. His untimely death at the age of thirty-seven, Vasari said, "plunged into grief the entire papal court"; the Pope, who "wept bitterly when he died, had intended making him a Cardinal."

Raphael: From Urbino to Rome National Gallery, London
20 October 2004-16 January 2005 'Raphael: From Urbino to Rome' charts the development of one of the most important artists in the history of Western art. Born in Urbino (1483-1520), Raphael's precocious talent, developed painting altarpieces for provincial towns in central Italy, went on to assume an exceptional position at the papal court of Pope Julius II. The subject of the National Gallery's exhibition is this transformation that took little more than a decade during which he studied in Florence under the influence of Leonardo and Michelangelo. This is the first comprehensive exhibition of paintings and drawings outside of Italy. It centres on the National Gallery's collection of nine superb Raphael paintings including the recently acquired 'Madonna of the Pinks', (c.1507-08). Many of the loan paintings have never been shown before in Britain, while others are back in this country for the first time since they were sold in the 19th century. These include 'Alba Madonna' (1509-11) from the National Gallery of Art, Washington, the 'Conestabile Madonna' (c.1503-04) from the Hermitage, St Petersburg, 'Saint George and Saint Michael' (1503-04) from the Louvre and 'Self-Portrait' (c.1506) from the Uffizi. This is the third of a series of three exceptional Renaissance exhibitions at the National Gallery:

Raphael, the last of the three greatest painters of the Renaissance, was born Raffaello Sanzio in Urbino, in the province of Umbria. It is probable that he took his first lessons from his father, a provincial painter named Giovanni di Santi, before going to Florence, where by 1500 he was working in the studio of Perugino, an artist well known for his serene and beautifully colored works. Under the influence of Michelangelo and Leonardo , both of whom were in Florence during this time, Raphael, whose early work already surpassed his master's, soon lost any provincial tendencies as he began to adopt Michelangelo Want to see more Raphael Sanzio Visit the rest of Mystudios: [Art Haus] [Forgery] [Modigliani] [Home] ... Biography
Raphael (his full name Raffaello Sanzi or Santi), Italian painter and architect of the Italian High Renaissance. Raphael is best known for his Madonnas and for his large figure compositions in the Vatican in Rome. His work is admired for its clarity of form and ease of composition and for its visual achievement of the Neoplatonic ideal of human grandeur. Early years at Urbino Raphael was the son of Giovanni Santi and Magia di Battista Ciarla; his mother died in 1491. His father was, according to the 16th-century artist and biographer Giorgio Vasari, a painter "of no great merit." He was, however, a man of culture who was in constant contact with the advanced artistic ideas current at the court of Urbino. He gave his son his first instruction in painting, and, before his death in 1494, when Raphael was 11, he had introduced the boy to humanistic philosophy at the court. Urbino had become a centre of culture during the rule of Duke Federico da Montefeltro, who encouraged the arts and attracted the visits of men of outstanding talent, including Donato Bramante,

Many of the works that Raphael executed in the years between 1505 and 1507, most notably a great series of Madonnas, are marked by the influence of Leonardo, who since 1480 had been making great innovations in painting. In 1507 Raphael was commissioned to paint the Deposition of Christ that is now in the Borghese Gallery in Rome. In this work, it is obvious that Raphael deliberately learned from

    Influences on Raphael
After the complexities of Leonardo and Michelangelo , it is a relief to find Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio, 1483-1520), a genius no less than they, but one whose daily ways were those of other men. He was born in the small town of Urbino, an artistic centre, and received his earliest training from his father. Later, his father sent him to Pietro Perugino (active 1478-1523) who, like Verrocchio and Ghirlandaio , was an artist of considerable gifts. But while Leonardo and Michelangelo quickly outgrew their teachers and show no later trace of influence, Raphael had a precocious talent right from the beginning and was an innate absorber of influences. Whatever he saw, he took possession of, always growing by what was taught to him. An early Raphael can look like a Perugino. In fact, Perugino's
