Memoir and Biography of Jessie Benton Evans, 1866-1954,
Historic Arizona Landscape Painter by Her Great Grand-Daughter, Artist Jessie Benton Evans
As children, my sister Jane and I climbed the southeast face of Camelback Mountain to a large promontory of stone we called "flat rock." Stretched on its broad, horizontal surface, we gazed at the panorama belowour childhood home, our grandparents' resorts, Jokake and Paradise Inns, and the tall cypresses and gardens clustered around the home of our artist great grandmother. To the east, the pristine desert expanded unbroken towards our favorite mountains which shimmered in the lightFour Peaks, Superstition, Granite Reef (now called Red Mountain) and the Mc Dowells. The desert shaped both my art and that of my great grandmother, Jessie Benton Evans, 1866-1954, for whom I was named. Our paintings were shown, together with other artists in the exhibit, "In Celebration: A Century of Arizona Women Artists," at Desert Caballeros Western Museum in Wickenburg, February 3 - April 29, 2001. Speaking five languages, in mid life my great grandmother, Jessie, came west for her health, having spent her adult life in Chicago and Europe. The year was 1913. In Arizona, soon recovered, she hated, then quickly grew to love the desert. "I think the colors here more beautiful than in any place I have been," she said. "The variety is endless. Everything is here except the sea, but one really gets the effect of the sea in looking over the vast expanses of desert. The wide spaces give an uplifted feeling of infinitythe eternity of things." At the base of Camelback Mountain, she purchased 80 acres and built a house in the style of an Italian villa. During her last 41 years in Arizona, she became a leading painter of southwest landscape.

Mark Harden's Artchive: Rembrandt

Rembrandt, Dutch baroque artist, ranks as one of the greatest painters in the history of Western art. His full name was Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn. He possessed a profound understanding of human nature that was matched by a brilliant technique—not only in painting but in drawing and etching—and his work made an enormous impact on his contemporaries and influenced the style of many later artists. Perhaps no painter has ever equaled Rembrandt's chiaroscuro effects or his bold impasto.
Born in Leiden on July 15, 1606, Rembrandt was the son of a miller. Despite the fact that he came from a family of relatively modest means, his parents took great care with his education. Rembrandt began his studies at the Latin School, and at the age of 14 he was enrolled at the Leiden University. The program did not interest him, and he soon left to study art—first with a local master, Jacob van Swanenburch, and then, in Amsterdam, with Pieter Lastman, known for his historical paintings. After six months, having mastered everything he had been taught, Rembrandt returned to Leiden, where he was soon so highly regarded that although barely 22 years old, he took his first pupils, among them Gerrit Dou.

Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669)
Life
Rembrandt moved to Amsterdam in 1631; his marriage in 1634 to Saskia van Uylenburgh, the cousin of a successful art dealer, enhanced his career, bringing him in contact with wealthy patrons who eagerly commissioned portraits. An exceptionally fine example from this period is the Portrait of Nicolaes Ruts (1631, Frick Collection, New York City). In addition, Rembrandt's mythological and religious works were much in demand, and he painted numerous dramatic masterpieces such as The Blinding of Samson In contrast to his successful public career, however, Rembrandt's family life was marked by misfortune. Between 1635 and 1641 Saskia gave birth to four children, but only the last, Titus, survived; her own death came in 1642. Hendrickje Stoffels, engaged as his housekeeper about 1649, eventually became his common-law wife and was the model for many of his pictures. These problems in no way affected Rembrandt's work; if anything, his artistry increased. Some of the great paintings from this period are The Jewish Bride The Syndics of the Cloth Guild (1661, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam)

Raphael is one of the most famous Madonna painters. He painted so many that his biography as a painter can be retraced and illustrated thanks to those outstanding artistic representations of Our Lady. The following is an attempt to present Raphael through his Madonnas, or at least a good number of them. Raphael's Madonnas are popular topics for Christmas stamps. Until 1991, Raphael's Madonnas were pictured on 298 stamps (or blocks of stamps) in 75 countries. Among the most popular we have: 1) Madonna del Gran'Duca
2) Sixtine Madonna
4) Madonna Ansidei
5) Madonna della Sedia (chair)
6) Madonna Aldobrandini (or Garvagh or with Carnation)
7) Madonna with Goldfinch
8) Holy family with Lamb
The first period: 1499-1504 Raphael Santi was born in Urbino/Umbria on April 6, 1483. The boy was taught by his father Giovanni Santi, an honest painter. Raphael is 11 when his father dies. At age 16 he leaves for Perugia. He is admitted into the school of Il Perugino, his true teacher and master. In 1502/1503 he spent 15 months with Pinturicchio in Siena. At 19 Raphael is still a timid, somewhat mystically inclined young painter of provincial origin and habits. His first Madonnas are young, with pouting mouth, round face and veiled head. The posture is traditional and rigid, the form at times fuzzy. Already his exceptional qualities of simplicity, grace and harmony in color and composition can be noted. His admiration goes to Fra Angelico whose Madonnas seem to escape gravity. He emulates his master Il Perugino but already his own genius transpires.

30. Deanna's World: Reflections Of The Renaissance
Underlines the creativity of the Renaissance by including artwork, literature, historical facts, and specific biographical information. Featured artists include Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and raphael.
http://www.dworldonline.com/ren.htm
The Renaissance was an era of beautiful artwork and structures which flourished all over western Europe. Although it began in Italy where there was always a residue of classical-styled architecture, it might have been expected to appear first in Rome. During the 14th and early 15th centuries, however, Rome's political situation was very unfavorable for artistic endeavor, unlike that of Florence.
The early Renaissance in Rome was rapidly approaching the simplicity, monumentality, and massiveness of the High Renaissance of the early 16th century. It renounced the exploits of the Medieval master-mansions, and defined beauty as fidelity at the expense of all other considerations. Some of the most noted artists, architects, and sculptors of the High Renaissance include Donato Bramante, Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael.
In essence, the Renaissance was a time period in which stunning sculptures, buildings, and artwork flourished all over western Europe. It was one of the high points of humanism and the expression of creativity and beauty of life. He was born in Urbino in 1483 and received his first instruction in the techniques of painting from his father, Giovanni Santi, a minor artist. Urbino, where Raphael spent his youth, was also the seat of the warfaring but art-loving condottiere Federico 11 da Montefeltro. At Federico's court, Raphael was introduced to the works of such artists as Paolo Uccello Luca Signorelli Hieronymus Bosch Leonardo and Michelangelo . The intensive debates surrounding the new directions being taken in art at that time must have made a forceful impression on the young 21-year-old. It was a period in which Leonardo, just returned from Milan, was astounding the public with his Mona Lisa ; Fra Bartolommeo was exhibiting his Last Judgement ; and Michelangelo, who had come back to Florence from his first trip to Rome three years previously, had completed his
