Jackson Pollock's Blue Poles
4 October 2002 - 27 January 2003
  • The 50th anniversary of the creation of Blue Poles and 20th anniversary of the opening of the National Gallery of Australia
The first time Jackson Pollock's Blue Poles has been shown in an exhibition in Australia in the context of a broad range of other works by the artist. Revisits the genius and fragility of Jackson Pollock the man and artist whose work reached, retains and strengthens in iconic status in 20th-century art history.
Claimed by many critics as the 'most influential American painter of the 20th century', Jackson Pollock first became a household name in Australia in 1973 when the Australian National Gallery took possession of his painting Blue Poles Number II , 1952. The controversy that surrounded the purchase prompted a national tour of the painting to introduce it to the Australian public. Since that time Blue Poles has been permanently on view at the National Gallery of Australia, excluding a short sojourn to the major retrospective exhibition Jackson Pollock at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in 1998.

This book accompanies the first retrospective exhibition in over 30 years of the most influential American painter of the 20th century. For readers who have little time to spare and are averse to art-world jargon, this series aims to provide an entertaining guide to individual artists and pop culture. Jackson Pollock has been described as the most important American painter of the 20th C.

Jackson Pollock While Jackson Pollock has the reputation he justly deserves for being an apolitical "art for art's sake" type in his prime, it is important to understand that he did not start out this way. In many respects, his journey from radical politics to inward-looking Abstract Expressionist careerist is emblematic of 20th century American social history. From Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith's mammoth (934 pages!) and informative "Jackson Pollock: an American Saga," we learn that Roy Pollock, Jackson's father, was sympathetic to leftist causes, as well as being an artist himself. Jackson heard his father defend the IWW often, and celebrate the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917. Roy Pollock's favorite magazine was the Nation, which was a fairly radical publication at the turn of the century as opposed to the Clinton fan club it has become. However, the biggest influence on young Jackson Pollock was Frederick Schwankovsky, his art teacher in Manual Arts high school in Los Angeles. Schwankovsky was a partisan of the Communist Party as well as Madame Blavatsky's Theosophist Society, whose latest avatar was Jiddu Krishna, a.k.a. Krishnamurti. This is not such an odd combination, when you examine the 19th century radical movement whose influence lingered on into the 20th century, especially in Los Angeles, where the Pollock family lived. Why California has been a magnet for such cults is a topic for another post. Suffice it to say at this point that spiritualism of the Blavatsky sort went hand in hand with woman's suffrage, anti-racism, utopian socialism, etc. in the 1870s and 80s. Victoria Woodhull, leader of the first Marxist group in the United States, and who ran for president with Frederic Douglass as her running-mate, was a professional spiritualist.

Save it. the artist Jackson Pollock was born in Cody, Wyoming, the youngest of five brothers, all of whom had careers in the visual arts. Jackson was not very talkative, and he was continually expelled from schools for his rebellious behavior. Only when he decided to become an artist did he find lasting satisfaction. He went to New York where he enrolled in the Art Students League (an art school) under the guidance of the well-known painter, Thomas Hart Benton. Benton recognized Pollock's talent and became a lifelong friend. Pollock was strongly influenced by the powerful rhythms in Benton's painting, but continued to search for the best way to express himself. Along the way, he studied the ideas to be found in the work of such experimental artists as Albert Pinkham Ryder, and Mexican painters, David Alfaro Siqueiros and Jose Clemente Orozco.

    Jackson Pollock's Fractals
The abstract painter Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) is widely known for his spectacular, wall-sized paintings, which typically feature a combination of swirling drips, bright splotches, and bold, rhythmic streaks. Pollock's signature technique, which he developed in the late 1940s and early 1950s, was to drip house paintin colors such as black, white, silver, taupe, and tealfrom hardened, worn-out brushes, sticks, and other applicators onto enormous sheets of canvas spread across the floor. His approach, however, was somewhat more systematic than the chaotic results might suggest. Pollock would begin by using a series of fluid strokes to draw a collection of loopy figures. When the paint dried, he would connect the scattered shapes with darker, thicker slashes of pigment. Additional layers of dripped, poured, and hurled paint would further obscure the original forms, creating a dense web of trails across the canvas. Physicist Richard P. Taylor of the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, who is also trained as an artist, has taken a mathematical look at Pollock's splatter paintings to try to uncover the secret of their appeal to many viewers.

PS-B RATING - I didn't know too much about Jackson Pollock before seeing Ed Harris' impressive biopic. I knew he was an artist. I had heard of his wife, but I didn't know she was an artist as well. And I remember Patti Smith referring to him as a "nigger" in one of her songs. After seeing Pollock , I'm still not that familiar with the celebrated American artist, but I do know that Harris and screen wife Marcia Gay Harden act their asses off in the film and were justifiably honored with Academy Award nominations for their performances. Pollock is almost good enough to transcend the typical tale of a tortured artist, only occasionally slipping into clichéd scenes showing the artist sitting alone with his head buried in his hands or curled up in the fetal position. For those of you as uneducated about art as myself, Pollock (played by

Archives Portrait of an Artist Striking 'Pollock' never quite penetrates the riddle of artist's life By Richard von Busack NOW THAT everyone worships him as a dead art saint, no one will connect Jack the Dripper's penchant for public urination with his talent for splashing paint. In Pollock , director/title star Ed Harris re-creates the way action painter Jackson Pollock spread drips and splatters onto canvases of still-breathtaking harmony. The paintings themselves often exonerate Pollock's turbulent, self-destructive life. He was not just the most celebrated American artist of his age; he was also the most self-hating: a corrosive, battling drunk who acted like a rock star on a bender. What the fictional film Pollock (now showing at the UA 5 in Santa Rosa and the Sequoia in Mill Valley, and up for two Academy Awards, including a Best Actor nod to Harris) describes well is the mid-1940s art scene: backstabbing, hardscrabbling, the audience barely existent, the market practically nil. This film vividly portrays the way the ruthlessness of this scene turned inward on the artists. But it doesn't go far enough in showing us what tormented Jackson Pollock. Pollock makes the artist's long-suffering wife, Lee Krasner, into a saint, too. Marcia Gay Harden's performance (which scored her a Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress) is so strong that the film ought to have been called

No doubt the Modern meant to imbue its massive Pollock retrospective, which dislocated half of its permanent collection, with similar narrative. But the actual show so ingloriously fails in this regard, to show Pollock as an artistic success, that we are left asking, why? Why does he seem distant and foreign when he was once so contemporary? Why do his accomplishments seem sad and powerless when they were once so vibrant? Three years later, in 1947, Pollock began painting in what might be called his high-style: large canvases laid flat, the application of paint poured on, all-over abstraction. This run, marked by a fury of activity and production, spans from Full Fathom Five (1947), to Blue Poles: Number II, 1952 (1952). Within these six years Pollock painted his greatest masterpieces, including Lavender Mist: Number 1 (1950), Autumn Rhythm: Number 30 (1950), Number 32, 1950 (1950), and Convergence: Number 10, 1952 (1952). He also eclipsed his American colleagues, and his European contemporaries, as the most well-known artist of the generation. In fact he became what perhaps no other artist in history had been before, a celebrity in his own time. Four years later he drove his car into a tree less than a mile from his East Hampton farm and killed himself, along with a sometime-girlfriend in the passenger seat. He had produced little art since 1952. His trim frame had become puffy though a diet of beer, his face jaundiced and stained with cigarette smoke. Something killed him, but it was not the artistic martyrdom that many critics would rush to call it.
