From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Jackson Pollock in 1950 Pollock's Galaxy , a part of the Joslyn Art Museum 's permanent collection Blue Poles Jackson Pollock January 28 August 11 ) was an influential American artist and a major force in the abstract expressionism movement. He was born in Cody, Wyoming , and grew up in Arizona and California , later moving to New York in , where he studied under Thomas Hart Benton . Pollock's early representational work was influenced by the Mexican Muralists David Alfaro Siqueiros and Diego Rivera but after visiting exhibitions of Pablo Picasso and Surrealist Art his work became more symbolic. Pollock had for several years been in psychoanalytic therapy to try and cope with depression and this gave him an interest in Carl Jung 's theory of primitive archetypes that formed the basis of his work between 1938 and 1944. These works were often violent and not well received at first. Pollock married Lee Krasner in 1944 and in 1945 they moved to Long Island where he made his studio in a barn. Krasner worked to support the couple so that Pollock could concentrate on his painting. Pollock was able to work on large areas of canvas spread on the floor, in the process he moved away from figurative art, and developed techniques of splashing and dripping his paint onto canvas ( action painting ). Pollock was dubbed "Jack the Dripper" due to his painting style. Despite the apparent randomness of his technique Pollock extensively edited the canvases by trimming or destroying the whole work.

Biography:

Jackson Pollack grew up on the west coast, influenced by the art of the Native American and Mexican cultures in his area. He also was impressed by the brash techniques of Benton and the Regionalists. One of his other interests, psychology, found its way into Pollack’s work. In the Surrealist style, he began to paint spontaneously, as a way to depict subconscious thoughts and feelings. Pollack’s alcoholism and misunderstood paintings pushed him into isolation until 1947, when he introduced his “drip” technique. This process of dripping paint straight from the can onto a canvas made Pollack famous. However, his production decreased in the 1950’s and he died in a car crash in 1956.

"The modern artist, it seems to me, is working and expressing an inner world in other words - expressing the energy, the motion and other inner forces." It doesn't make much difference how the paint is put on as long as something has been said. Technique is just a means of arriving at a statement. "When I'm painting, I'm not aware of what I'm doing. It's only after a get acquainted period that I see what I've been about. I've no fears about making changes for the painting has a life of its own." "It is only when I lose contact with the painting that the result is a mess. Otherwise there is pure harmony, an easy give and take, and the painting comes out well."

The Last Dance
John Haber

Jackson Pollock
In Jackson Pollock's hands, paint took on the delicacy, power, and variety of a human form. He laid it on with care, in dabs of black and skeins of intense color. He let it run off as he circled a canvas, as if it flowed from the motion of his body. On that enormous scale, it accumulates the debris of an artist's life, from ashes and canvas ends to the sober gray of Long Island sunlight. At once palpable, fluid, and transparent to the light, it gives to an entire museum wall the brightness, odor, and ordinary necessity of fresh house paint. After half a century of pattern painting and parody, Pollock's drip paintings can be seen at last as a lot more than drips, but they remain the most defiantly abstract art ever made. And yet his retrospective begins with the small, clumsy image of a boy's face, his own. Achingly shy, he has the dark rings around his eyes of a battered child. The painting, Pollock's only known self-portrait, could stand for all the weaknesses of his art, right up to the desperately few final years that made him famous. Well past the excuses of student age, he settles for unpromising class work. The portrait's derivative style lies somewhere between Expressionism and Sunday painting. By painting himself years younger, the victim of a father Pollock in fact hardly knew, he combines evasion with a severe case of self-dramatization.

James Coddington, Chief Conservator, The Museum of Modern Art was interviewed by Anna Hammond, Editor-in-Chief of MoMA , the Museum's magazine.
Anna Hammond: Intentionality is one of the key issues addressed in Jackson Pollock, and there's been a lot of discussion over the way Pollock workedwhether he made conscious decisions or not. You and conservator Carol Mancusi Ungaro of the Menil Collection in Houston are doing intensive research on his materials, techniques, and methods. What have you been finding?
James Coddington: I think that one of the things that's emerging with our study is that Pollock had a pretty clear notion of how his materials handled, how they worked, how they interacted with one another. And there's a level of consciousness, intention, about that that liberates him to paint as unconsciously as he does. He might be just grabbing materials that seem appropriate in the flush of the moment of creation, but he hasn't got a full universe of materials to grab. He's narrowed that universe because he knows that the materials are going to work and because he's come to know how they're going to work. So, I think that there is a great deal of consciousness, balance, use of materials, and craft, that frees him to make as apparently unconsciously as he does.
AH: That reminds me of something that Henry Adams wrote: "Chaos is the law of nature. Order is the dream of man."

Biography

It was Jackson Pollock who blazed an astonishing trail for the other Abstract Expressionist painters to follow. Born Paul Jackson Pollock in Wyoming, he headed to California, but left before finishing high school to study at the Art Students League in New York. Having studied with Regionalist painter Thomas Hart Benton , he also drew inspiration from such varied sources as Picasso, Miró , the "psychic automatism" of the Surrealists, as well as the Mexican Muralists. Despite experiencing much personal turmoil, he went on to produce some of the most well-known and highly celebrated work in the world.
Died in East Hampton, NY (US)

Expression of an age
The US artist Jackson Pollock has long been controversial. John Molyneux explains why this is so in his review of a new exhibition of his work Every reader of Socialist Review with an interest in art should try and visit the Jackson Pollock retrospective at the Tate Gallery in London (11 March to 6 June). Here is a unique chance to see the work of one of the century's most influential and controversial artists. Pollock, for reasons of scale, texture and colour, demands to be seen in the original and most of the time there are only one or two works on view in Britain. In this show there is work from throughout Pollock's career and about a dozen of the great drip paintings on which his reputation and notoriety primarily rest. None of us judges or even 'sees' without preconceptions, and in the case of Pollock there are at least five 'interpretations' in sufficient circulation to condition our initial responses. The first and predominant interpretation seized on the drip and flick method of applying paint to suggest Pollock's work was just a random mess, an absurd tangle of lines and splodges. 'This is not artit's a joke in bad taste', as a Reynolds News headline put it in 1959. Doubtless this is a view that still plays well in the columns of the Sun but it is comprehensively refuted by any serious scrutiny of the paintings. A few minutes spent looking in turn at

MoMA Online Jackson Pollock: Modernism's Shooting Star Some 40 years later, Pollock is the subject of another major exhibition at MOMA. The retrospective, which will be on view from November 1 through February 2, 1999, features more than 150 paintings and works on paper executed during a career of approximately 25 years. Born in Cody, Wyoming, in 1912, Pollock was raised mainly in California and from there made his way to New York City, where he studied with artist Thomas Hart Benton. The paintings he produced during the early years variously reflect the influence of Benton, Albert Pinkham Ryder and the Mexican muralists. They also reveal hints of American Indian symbology, Jungian archetypes and the work of Picasso and other European modernists.
