Lesson Plan: Feelings in Color
Mark Rothko (American, born Russia, 1903-1970). Orange and Yellow, 1956, oil on canvas, 91 x 71" Gift of Seymour H. Knox, 1956 INTRODUCTION This lesson is an exercise in looking and thinking, making comparisons and connections. It relates to elements in all categories of the comprehension strategies of the third-grade language arts program: relate ideas, organize information, synthesize ideas, evaluate ideas, and generate and apply ideas. The family project could relate to the science and math curricula by turning the students' survey results into graphs and charts, followed by an analysis of the compiled data. INFORMATION FOR THE TEACHER Although artists rarely want to be categorized, the label "abstract expressionism" aptly describes their work. The paintings are completely abstract, with no recognizable objects from the real world (another term for completely abstract is NON-OBJECTIVE), and the purpose of their art is to create expression and emotion.

jackson pollock: cia stooge?
by Nick Mamatas (nillo@agoron.com) - July 28, 2002
The fevered drip paintings of Jackson Pollock did more than shatter the primacy of representational art. It did more than kick the easel out from under the frame, transforming painting technique forever. And Jackson Pollock's art did more than take up wall space in the offices of philistine fatcats, it helped win the Cold War. Jackson Pollock and other modern artists were secretly subsidized and promoted by the CIA as an antidote to the iconography of Soviet Realism and as a counter-punch to the body of post-war art, which was radicalizing both artists and viewers. In the 1930s, Pollock and other artists were involved in a variety of government and later, Communist activities. Artists who cut their teeth painting WPA murals for Roosevelt gravitated left-ward, Pollock himself worked with famed radical muralist David Alfaro Siquieros. As his work left representation of any form behind (one critic called a painting a "Melted Picasso"), the US State Department saw the perfect weapon. Since there was no political content, no theme to the work, in fact, there was often nothing at all but the most self-obsessed swirls in Pollock's huge canvases, his art was easily commandeered and made a weapon. Stalin could hug as many children and lead as many peasants to the wheat fields in an evil Norman Rockwell universe as he liked, Pollock's empty confusion spoke to the people of a shattered Europe, the wizards of America's corporate towers and their brainwashed suburban peasants.

Last Modified 07/30/2001 04:10:09 PM EDT Paul Jackson Pollock was born in Cody, Wyoming on 28 January 1912. He was the fifth and youngest son of LeRoy McCoy Pollock and Stella McClure Pollock. The family left Cody when Pollock was less than a year old, and he was raised in Arizona and California. After a series of unsuccessful farming ventures, his father became a surveyor and worked on road crews at the Grand Canyon and elsewhere in the Southwest. Pollock, who sometimes joined his father on these jobs, later remarked that memories of the panoramic landscape influenced his artistic vision.
While attending Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles, Pollock was encouraged to pursue his early interest in art. Two of his brothers, Charles and Sanford (known as Sande), were also developing as artists. Charles, the eldest, went to New York to study with the Regionalist painter Thomas Hart Benton at the Art Students League, and he suggested that Jackson should join him. In 1930 Pollock went east and enrolled in Benton's class at the League. It was at about this time that he dropped his first name, Paul, and began using his middle name. Under Benton's guidance, Pollock analyzed Old Master paintings and learned the rudiments of drawing and composition. He also studied mural painting with Benton and posed for his teacher's 1930-31 murals at the New School for Social Research, where the Mexican muralist José Clemente Orozco was at work on frescoes. Pollock's first-hand experience of contemporary mural painting is thought to have sparked his ambition to paint large scale works of his own, although he would not realize that aim until 12 years later.

Jackson Pollock (
Excerpted from "My Painting" in Possibilities I , Winter 1947-48 (source: Johnson)
My painting does not come from the easel. I hardly ever stretch my canvas before painting. I prefer to tack the unstretched canvas to the hard wall or the floor. I need the resistance of a hard surface. On the floor I am more at ease. I feel nearer, more a part of the painting, since this way I can walk around it, work from the four sides and literally be in the painting. This is akin to the method of the Indian sand painters of the West.
Lavender Mist: Number 1 , 1950, National Gallery of Art
Image courtesy of Mark Harden's Artchive I continue to get further away from the usual painter's tools such as easel, palette, brushes, etc. I prefer sticks, trowels, knives and dripping fluid paint or a heavy impasto with sand, broken glass and other foreign matter added.
When I am in my painting, I'm not aware of what I'm doing. It is only after a sort of "get acquainted" period that I see what I have been about. I have no fears about making changes, destroying the image, etc., because the painting has a life of its own. I try to let it come through. It is only when I lose contact with the painting that the result is a mess. Otherwise there is pure harmony, an easy give and take, and the painting comes out well.
From an interview with William Wright in 1950 (source: Johnson)
WW: Mr. Pollock, in your opinion, what is the meaning of modern art?

Moving around the unprimed canvas, which was laid flat on the wooden floor of his Long Island studio, Pollock poured, splattered, and dripped paint and enamel using his entire body in the process. This approach reinvented the methods and tools of traditional easel painting and came to be known as Action Painting, a style that demanded the total physical involvement of the artist. [
