What few know is that in 1935, at age 54, Picasso stopped painting, and for a time devoted himself entirely to poetry. Even after eventually resuming his visual work, Picasso continued to write, in a characteristic torrent, until 1959 leaving a body of poems that André Breton praised as, 'an intimate journal, both of the feelings and the senses, such as has never been kept before.' Near the end of his life, Picasso himself would tell a friend that, 'long after his death his writing would gain recognition and encyclopedias would say: 'Picasso, Pablo Ruiz - Spanish poet who dabbled in painting, drawing and sculpture.' Jerome Rothenberg and Pierre Joris have overseen a project to translate the majority of this writing into English for the first time. Working from Picasso's Spanish and French (he wrote in both languages), they have enlisted the help of over a dozen colleagues in order to mark, as they note in their introduction, 'Picasso's entry into our own time.' Picasso's poems are as protean, erotic, scatological, and experimental as his visual art yet they arrive as a twenty-first century surprise, even for many devotees." One of the most prolific artists in history, he created more than 20,000 works. Picasso was born in Malaga. He made three trips to Paris between 1900 and 1902, and his art was influenced by the postimpressionism of French painter Paul Gauguin, the symbolist painters called the Nabis, and French painters Edgar Degas and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Picasso's Blue Room (1901, Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C.) reflects the work of the two latter painters and shows his evolution toward his Blue Period, so called because various shades of blue dominated his work for the next few years.

Along with Georges Braque, Picasso is best known as one of the creators of Cubism , though he utilized many styles during his career. In the paintings of his Blue Period (1901-1904), such as The Old Guitarist, Picasso worked with a monochromatic palette , flattened forms, and tragic, sorrowful themes. The tragic themes and expressive style of Picasso's Blue Period began after a close friend committed suicide in Paris . During this time, the artist was sympathetic to the plight of the downtrodden and painted many canvases depicting the miseries of the poor, the ill, and those cast out of society. He too knew what it was like to be impoverished, having been nearly penniless during all of 1902. Symbolist Spain El Greco

Picasso and Cubism
The art of painting original arrangements composed of elements taken from conceived rather than perceived reality.
Guillaume Apollinaire, The Beginnings of Cubism After Cubism, the world never looked the same again: it was one of the most influential and revolutionary movements in art. The Spaniard Pablo Picasso and the Frenchman Georges Braque splintered the visual world not wantonly, but sensuously and beautifully with their new art. They provided what we could almost call a God's-eye view of reality: every aspect of the whole subject, seen simultaneously in a single dimension. The Cubist movement in painting was developed by Picasso and Braque around 1907 and became a major influence on Western art. The artists chose to break down the subjects they were painting into a number of facets, showing several different aspects of one object simultaneously. The work up to 1912 is known as Analytical Cubism, concentrating on geometrical forms using subdued colors. The second phase, known as Synthetic Cubism, used more decorative shapes, stencilling, collage, and brighter colors. It was then that artists such as Picasso and Braque started to use pieces of cut-up newspaper in their paintings. © 14 Oct 2002

The Charge A definitive biography accompanied by spectacular images of the artist's great work. The Case Pablo Picasso: Artists Of The 20th Century sticks mostly to an academic examination of his life, and only mentions the people and woman in his life as they directly relate to his art and/or artistic periods of work. (Many academics and art historians chronicle the work of Picasso based on whichever woman he had in his life, for they influenced his work so.) As such, this is less a documentary about the man and much more a detailed examination of his artistic endeavors. As a painting appears on screen, the narrator spends about thirty seconds describing the pathos and thematic development of each painting as it relates to Picasso's career as a whole. Literally, from start to finish, there is nothing on screen but paintings and sculptures, one after the other. The aggressive pace of the film is such that one could easily drift away in the wash of facts, themes, and large academic words. For example, a painting comes on screen:

Introduction
Picasso is most famous as the co-founder of Cubism . However, in a long life he produced a wide and varied body of work, the best-known being the Blue Period works which feature moving depictions of acrobats, harlequins , prostitutes, beggars and artists. While Picasso was primarily a painter (in fact he believed that an artist must paint in order to be considered a true artist), he also worked with small ceramic and bronze sculptures , collage and even wrote some poetry Je suis aussi un po¨te ," as he quipped to his friends. Picasso was the most prolific painter ever, as deemed in the Guiness Book of Records . He produced about 13,500 paintings or designs, 100,000 prints or engravings, 34,000 book illustrations, and 300 sculptures and ceramics plus drawings and tapestries. The total value of his work was estimated in 1973 to be about $750 million. Guernica Arguably Picasso's most famous work is his depiction of the German bombing of Guernica Spain Guernica .
