Home 1930s–Present Credits About the Work of Art: Ranchos Church, New Mexico Oil on canvas Amon Carter Museum, Fort Worth, Texas About the Artist Activities for Ranchos Church, New Mexico This eighteenth-century Spanish mission church sits near the Sangre de Christo Mountains, below which lies a large, fertile plain and the Rio Grande. The Pueblo Indians have occupied the region for nearly a thousand years. The first Spanish explorers arrived in northern New Mexico in 1540 to convert the natives to Catholicism and occupy reliable agricultural lands. The village of Ranchos de Taos was settled by the Spanish in 1716. The Ranchos church, San Francisco de Asis, was completed in 1815. It is an example of Franciscan Old World architectural ideals combined with New World building techniques. The Ranchos church is made of adobe. For O'Keeffe this must have been more like painting a landscape than an architectural form. Her nearly monochromatic palette serves to unite the ground with the building and further identifies it as a natural form silhouetted against a cloudy sky. Email Archives Print Reprint March 31, 2005 Georgia O'Keeffe was one of the world's greatest artists. She was a leader in New York's modernist movement of the 1910s and '20s, but she would find her inspiration far from the city streets - in the New Mexican desert. G eorgia O'Keeffe loved wide- open spaces. She was born on a dairy farm in Sun Prarie, Wis. on Nov. 15, 1887. By the time she was 14, she knew she wanted to be an artist. When Georgia was 16, she moved to Virginia to formally begin studying art. This would be the first in a series of seemingly endless moves. In 1905, Georgia continued her artistic studies, moving to Chicago to attend the Art Institute. She left Chicago after a bout of typhoid fever, this time heading for New York's Art Students League.

The Early Years Alfred Stieglitz and Georgia O'Keeffe (taken at an American Place) , 1944. Arnold Newman. Beginning in the spring of 1917, Alfred Stieglitz began taking photos of the 29 year-old O'Keeffe in the "291" studio. Stieglitz often had O'Keeffe pose with her paintings as seen here. In the portrait of O'Keeffe wearing a derby hat, she is standing in front of her Blue ii (1917) abstract. Stieglitz especially enjoyed photographing O'Keeffe's hands and these photographs seem to emphasize the creative potential and prowess Stieglitz recognized in O'Keeffe. Over the next seven years, Stieglitz amassed hundreds of portraits of O'Keeffe which he first exhibited in 1923. In March of 1924 both O'Keeffe's paintings and Stieglitz's portraits were exhibited simultaneously at Stieglitz's "American Place" gallery. Ultimately, Stieglitz's portraits of O'Keeffe proved to be a stroke of marketing genius because not only was the public intrigued by his photographs, but they were also captivated by O'Keeffe's work. In 1905, he founded the Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession with the help of Edward Steichen, located at 291 Fifth Avenue in New York City.
