Thomas Moran's paintings brought home America's Wild West Tuesday, March 20, 2001 By Mary Thomas, Post-Gazette Art Critic American artist Thomas Moran did a tremendous favor for his fellow citizens. In 1871 he traveled to what is now Wyoming with a U.S. Geological Survey expedition. The sketches and paintings he made of the landscape, and later showed in the East, helped to persuade Congress to establish Yellowstone as America's first national park. "The Poetry of Place: Works on Paper by Thomas Moran from the Gilcrease Museum" has a very personal feel that comes from the art's intimate scale and detail and also from the omnipresence of Moran's hand, whether in the exquisitely drawn line of a bluff or the written notations of what color it should be. Also making this work personal is the poetic approach, alluded to in the title, that Moran took when interpreting the land. Moran, who was born in 1837 in Bolton, England, and died in 1926 in Santa Barbara, Calif., was a self-taught painter from a talented family. His father was a weaver who in 1844 moved his family to Philadelphia, where Moran was reared. His brother John was a photographer, printmaker and critic; brother Edward, a painter; and Moran's wife, Mary, whom he married in 1863, was a well-regarded etcher. "Poetry of Place" "Poetry of Place" is at The Frick Art Museum through May 8.

INTRODUCTION
M oran was most responsible for making people aware of their national heritage. His paintings of what is now called the Yellowstone National Park inspired many Americans, especially those traveling West to explore the new frontier. The Yellowstone, here, means all that mountainous region up in northwestern Wyoming now known as the Yellowstone National Park, among the largest and most remarkable of all our national natural beauties. It was long a remote region of myth and legend among mountain men and their kind, the subject of many fantastic conceptions that for a long time were not taken seriously. Moran's three famous oil on canvas paintings were more than just realistic representations of the landscape - they provided spiritual and inspirational substance for those venturing to the West. They also showed vividly the awesome riches - scenic and material - of the West. So profound are his works that could be considered a national icon of the time. He was best known for his precise put idealized paintings of nature, and his rich use of colors. Moran's styles and techniques didn't come totally from within, but was greatly influenced by a number of prominent artists at the time, including Frederic Church, Albert Bierstadt, James Hamilton, and James Turner.

Thomas Moran (1837-1926) Recognized as the foremost painter of the American West, Thomas Moran was born in Bolton, Lancashire, England, in 1837. His family emigrated to the United States in 1844, settling in Philadelphia. At the age of sixteen, he was apprenticed to a local wood-engraving firm. During his spare time, he painted and drew on his own. Intent on becoming an artist, he made his professional debut at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1856. He later shared the first of several studios with his older brother Edward, the noted marine painter. Although Moran was a self-taught artist, he received much encouragement and advice from the Philadelphia-based marine painter, James Hamilton. Under Hamilton's guidance, he was introduced to the work of the popular British landscape and marine painter, J. M. W. Turner. Traveling to Europe in 1861, Moran was able to view first hand Turner's dynamic, light-filled composition and his luminous color effects. He also studied the landscapes of Claude Lorrain and came away highly impressed by their compositional strength. Returning to Philadelphia in the summer of 1862, Moran married Mary Nimmo, a former student and later a successful etcher. During the next few years he continued to exhibit at the Pennsylvania Academy in addition to working as an illustrator for various periodicals. He also taught at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women. In 1866, he made a second trip to Europe, visiting England, France and Italy.

Illustrations, notes, bibliography, index. xii + 313 pp. $75.00. This volume demonstrates how field sketches can illuminate an artist's philosophy and goals. It documents the extensive collection of sketches by Thomas Moran in the Thomas Gilcrease Institute of American History and Art, as well as some sketches held elsewhere. Usually known for his images of Yellowstone, Yosemite, and the Grand Canyon, Thomas Moran also worked in other parts of the United States and in Mexico, Britain, and Europe. This catalog demonstrates the importance of considering an artist's entire career when examining images of the American West. The introduction by Joan Carpenter Troccoli, a former director of the Gilcrease, emphasizes that Moran viewed artists as interpreters rather than recorders. Troccoli concludes, "We may come, indeed, to prefer Moran's sketches to his finished works for what they tell us about him and about our own willingness to surrender to imaginative reverie" (pp. g-lo). The text essay by Anne Morand, curator of art collections at the Gilcrease, studies Moran's career chronologically by examining numerous sketches. She succinctly notes experimentation with media and style, relationships between sketches at various points in his career, connections between Moran's sketches and paintings, and influences on Moran. She mentions notes he made about images and quotes from his letters to illuminate his attitudes. Her writing presents a refreshing synthesis of stylistic analysis and interpretation.

While he was enjoying critical and commercial success with his paintings of the West, Moran also found inspiration in other subjects. He was an artist of broad interests whose body of work included images based on historical and literary works, marine subjects, pastoral views, and, surprisingly, urban and industrial scenes. In the 1880s his long-time enthusiasm for marine painting grew stronger following his move to East Hampton, Long Island. From the cottage and large studio he built on Main Street in 1884, the artist had easy access to the beach, where he could study the sea in all its moods. Moran's numerous marine paintings include several shipwrecks disasters all too common along the eastern shore of Long Island.

Thomas Moran: Frontier Landscape Artist
In 1871, three years after the railroad had arrived in Green River City, a fellow named Thomas Moran stepped from a railroad car at Green River. It was reported that he found an instant fascination with the west and the eroded cliffs surrounding the Green River, of which he made the first sketches of his journey. Moran was 34 years of age at the time and was in route to Idaho to meet a Dr. Ferdinand D Hayden who was about to make his survey of the little-explored country of the Yellowstone for the United States government. Also with the expedition was another soon-to-be-famous artist, William Henry Jackson, renowned photographer of the westward movement. In addition to his sketching, Moran worked extensively with Jackson on his photography. Moran's "first sketch made in the West" was of Green River's toll gate rock and the palisades just west of the town. Using these sketches and others he made on subsequent trips, he produced several well-known oil and watercolor paintings of the area during his artistic career. He revisited this same subject time and time again, it being one of his most popular scenes. He escaped duplicating himself by showing the scenes under different conditions and moods. It was reported that no two Green River pictures were ever exactly alike, although their one constant was the looming cliffs of the Green River valley. His popular "The Cliffs of Green River" was painted in 1874. His final painting of the scene was made in 1918 when he was 81.

Using three American Memory collections, students recognize the impact photographer William Henry Jackson and artist Thomas Moran had on the creation of Yellowstone National Park. As members of the 1871 Hayden Expedition, Jackson's and Moran's images helped to shape Americans' ideas of the West. Students compare the photographic images with the paintings that resulted. They explore the legislative records and historical mapping of the area and produce an essay describing how Jackson's and Moran's artistic talents contributed to the creation of the American West.
Objectives
Students will improve skills in:
  • Visual literacy. Navigating and selecting specific online images. Using the Socratic method of inquiry to discuss how images played an important role in the creation of the national parks and American's ideas of the West. Writing a short essay using complete citations.
