Thomas Moran
At the National Gallery of Art
By Stephen May
WASHINGTON, D.C. The awesome beauty of the American West combined with the skills and imagination of Thomas Moran are showcased in a grand retrospective at the National Gallery of Art. In addition to Moran's celebrated, epic oil paintings of the West, which form the heart of the display, his superb watercolors and rarely exhibited images of industrial scenes, marinescapes, as well as views of Long Island, Italy, England and Mexico document both the diverse talent and extensive travels of this titan of Nineteenth Century American art. This first-ever Moran retrospective brings together over 100 of his finest works. Of special interest is a triptych of three panoramic Western canvases united for the first time, plus "The Three Tetons," which hangs in the Oval Office of the White House, and a selection of the artist's original watercolor sketches of Yellowstone. The latter helped inspire Congress to establish our first national park in 1872. The exhibition coincides with the 125th anniversary celebration of the creation of Yellowstone National Park. Admirably organized by Nancy K. Anderson, the National Gallery's associate curator of American and British paintings, in association with the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Okla., "Thomas Moran" continues in Washington through January 11, 1998. It then travels to the Gilcrease, which has the largest collection of Moran's works (February 8-May 10), and the Seattle Art Museum (June 11-August 30).

Drawn to Yellowstone: Artists in America's First National Park
April 16 - October 2, 2005
Special Exhibitions Gallery "I have wandered over a good part of the Territories and have seen much of the varied scenery of the Far West, but that of the Yellowstone retains its hold upon my imagination with a vividness as of yesterday ... "
Thomas Moran Famous for its rainbow-colored hot springs and geysers that spew boiling water into the air, Yellowstone National Park also contains lakes, mountains, streams, canyons, and wildlife within a landscape rich in both scenic beauty and environmental significance. Seemingly a place apart from civilization, Yellowstone's exotic appeal also has lured generations of artists. Their work, seen in the exhibition Drawn to Yellowstone: Artists in America's First National Park , invites you to explore the park's visual history, changing identity, and impact as a cultural phenomenon. This spectacular exhibition hangs through October 2, 2005 in the Special Exhibitions Gallery of the Buffalo Bill Historical Center. The first national park in the world, Yellowstone has been perceived as a vast visual spectacle from the moment of its inception in 1872. By the 1890s it was known as "the Nation's Art Gallery."

Human History of Yellowstone Objective
Students will identify Thomas Moran as an artist who accompanied the Hayden Survey of 1871, and recognize the importance of his watercolor sketches in the creation of Yellowstone as the country's first national park. Method
Students will study Moran's watercolors on the Influence of Art in Yellowstone Electronic Field Trip and discuss their importance in the history of Yellowstone National Park. Students will then capture their own scenes through painting with watercolors. Background
Moran's watercolors portray Yellowstone's remarkable scenery and grandeur, although at times even Moran was daunted by its sheer beauty. It is said that, when he first gazed upon the canyon now known as the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, he remarked that its beautiful colors "were beyond the reach of human art." Nonetheless he proceeded to record what he saw with his watercolors, just as Jackson recorded what he saw with his camera.

Thomas Moran
English-born landscape painter Thomas Moran was invited to accompany Ferdinand V. Hayden's famous Geological Survey Expedition in 1871. Moran's paintings of Yellowstone's geysers, hot springs, canyons and cliffs played a major role in convincing Congress to make the region a national park in 1872. After the Yellowstone trip, Moran's career as an expedition artist and painter blossomed. He continued to travel with subsequent Hayden surveys, and painted Yellowstone, Yosemite and the Grand Canyon, as well as other wilderness regions for the next forty years. Moran achieved such commercial success and widespread recognition for his paintings of the West that in the last years of his prolific career, he became known as the Dean of American Painters. Established in 1987, Zaplin Lampert Gallery specializes in fine examples of nineteenth- and twentieth-century American paintings, watercolors, prints and sculpture. Owners Mark Zaplin and Richard Lampert have been dealing in art since 1972 and have combined their knowledge and experience to present a diverse collection of fine art. In addition to offering regional works from the Taos School and Santa Fe art colony, the gallery exhibits classic Western art by such explorer artists as
