Thomas Moran (1837 - 1926)
Towards the end of his life, the painter Thomas Moran wrote: "It has often occurred to me as a curious and anomalous fact, that American artists are prone to seek the subjects for their art in foreign lands, to the almost entire exclusion of their own.... That there is a nationalism in art needs no proof. It is bred from a knowledge of and sympathy with [one's own] surroundings and no foreigner can imbue himself with a spirit of a country not his own. Therefore he should paint his own land...." As a young man, Moran did just what he admonished other artists for doing: he went to Europe to study painting and find inspiration. But at the end of his prolific career he was more closely associated with the landscapes of the American West than almost any other painter.
Moran first achieved national recognition for the work he created while accompanying a geological and geographic survey headed by Ferdinand V. Hayden. In the late 19th century, the U.S. government made the surveying of Western territory an integral part of its domestic policy. Washington wanted to investigate the West with a view to promoting settlement and commerce and exploiting natural resources. From 1867-1879, the Federal government supported four Great Surveys, each extremely ambitious in scope; each expected to provide a comprehensive written report, accompanied by visual materials. Hayden's own instructions from the Secretary of the Interior were "to secure as full materials as possible for the illustration of your final report, such as sketches, photographs, etc."

Thomas Moran (1837-1926)
Though born in England, Thomas Moran became one of America's greatest landscape artists. At age 15, he found work in an engraver's shop, where his talent first attracted attention. Moran was inspired by dramatic colors and light effects of English artist J.M.W. Turner's paintings, and would later be called "the American Turner." In 1871, Moran traveled westward with the U.S. Geological Survey of the Territories. He made many sketches of the Western landscape, especially the fantastic scenes of Yellowstone. These images, along with photographs by William Henry Jackson, helped persuade Congress to create America's first national park. Congress also purchased two of Moran's panoramic paintings to hang in the Capitol. Moran worked hard at his art, averaging 13 hours a day, usually on paintings of Western landscapes. He felt strongly that American artists should paint American landscapes. "There is little need," he said, "of American landscape painters going abroad in search of the grand, the sublime, and the beautiful. There is no phase of landscape in which we are not richer, more varied and interesting than any country in the world." Learn more about Moran and his paintings in our Go West, Young Artist

    Cliffs of Green River is a view depicting the landmark Toll-Gate Rock with a dramatic storm forming over the walls of the rock formations beyond. Cliffs of Green River stands as an early and characteristic example of his finest work. Close inspection of this painting reveals that Thomas Moran moved his figures from place to place until he was satisfied that each was contributing fully to the composition. Faint pencil lines reveal previous attempts to resolve the composition. A pentimento –an underlying image in a painting that shows through–of a horse appears on the left side of the painting between the large party of travelers, including Native Americans along the shore, and the man with a feather headdress in the river. Thomas Moran established his artistic reputation with his paintings of Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon. By 1876 Moran was regarded as one of the major landscape painters of his day, rivaling in stature Albert Bierstadt, who had introduced the panoramic western landscape a decade earlier. Unlike Bierstadt, who painted almost exclusively in oil, Moran also created some of the most dazzling watercolors of the late nineteenth century. Born in England in 1837, Moran moved with his parents to the United States in 1844. His father, a handloom weaver, first settled the family in Baltimore and then Philadelphia. The young Moran received art instruction from his elder brother, Edward, and later was apprenticed to a wood engraver. In 1861 Thomas and Edward went abroad to tour English museums and galleries to study works of other artists, including Joseph Mallord William Turner. Returning to the United States in 1862, Thomas married and settled again in Philadelphia where he opened his own studio. Throughout this period he made excursions into the Pennsylvania countryside to sketch river views.

    I. Introduction
    Photographs of Artists Collection I is a group of photographs which the Archives of American Art assembled from various sources during its first twenty years as an organization dedicated to collecting documentation on the visual arts in America. By the time the collection was microfilmed in 1973, nearly 1300 photographs had been gathered to form a reference file offering easy access to portraits of artists, artists in their studios, artists at work, artists with their work, art instructors and classes, art administrators, and other related photographs. The bulk of the photographs in the collection were removed from their original location in artists' papers, gallery records, or art organization records, the major sources being the Macbeth Gallery records; Forbes Watson papers;

    Sir Francis Seymour Haden

    GREENWICH. 1879. Schneiderman 187, Harrington 207, Drake 184. Signed in pencil; signed and dated in the plate. It is impossible to overstate the enthusiasm for Haden's etchings in the USA in the 1880s. Frederick Keppel declared that "By common consent Seymour Haden ranks as the greatest of modern etchers." Artists and the public here agreed. Haden was a major influence on American etchers, and when he gave lectures on etching here during 1882-1884, he drew audiences of nearly 800 people. Greenwich is one of Haden's most spectacular etchings. In excellent condition.
    Etching, 13 1/4 x 20 7/16 inches. Ellen Day Hale
    PONTE DELGADA, AZORES, 1921. Signed in pencil; on simili Japan paper. Signed and dated in the plate. Hale was an important figure in the late 19th century etching revival, and she continued to work with, and influence, groups of women etchers well into the 20th century. Her etchings are very scarce. Hale's art has received considerable attention in the past few years, but the best source of information about her prints is still Phyllis Peet, American Women of the Etching Revival , exh. cat., High Museum, Atlanta, 1988.
