C laude Monet was born on November 14, 1840, in Paris. A few years later, his family moved the the Normandie harbor town of Le Havre, where his father ran a marine trade supply store. Monet spent most of his youth in Le Havre, drawing caricatures of the locals, a talent which got him into trouble at school. Claude was a rebel, and he frequently disobeyed the rules. Regardless of her son's insubordination in school, Louise Monet was very encouraging of her son's budding talent. By the age of fifteen, Claude was selling caricatures for as much as 20 francs, which did not please his parents, who were well off from their prosperous business. Nonetheless, Monet continued drawing caricatures, and wasn't really interested in painting until he met Eugène Boudin, the man who would become his mentor. Boudin encouraged the young Monet to go outside and paint nature scenes, playing an important role in the young artist's development. Louise Monet died shortly following her son's very first showing, but his Aunt, Marie-Jeanne, soon took over the care and support of the gifted teen, who was showing signs of true talent as a painter.

CLAUDE MONET
Monet was regarded by his artist peers as a leader and as the man with the answers. Very often,
Monet's work was the first to introduce new ideas in a more radical way and then these elements
were taken over by other artists. Monet showed the way to such artists as Degas, Cezannes, Pissaro and Renoir. His influence can be seen in their work. During the period of 1873 to 1876, Monet's versatility is apparent in the disparity between his brilliant paintings and his
others in very neutral tones. Monet's early work portrayed objects, figures and scenes
as he saw them, but in his later work, he excluded the human figure. Hardly any figures or portraits are part of Monet's work between 1879 and 1885.Monet never painted a nude.
It's almost as if all of his passion was contained in the vast world of nature as he saw it.

Term Paper #30473 Add to Cart (You can always remove it later) Kuroda Seiki and Claude Monet: New Methods in Composition
Examination and comparison of Kuroda Seiki's "Withered Field (Grez)" and Claude Monet's "Waterloo Bridge, Grey Day". 3,150 words ( approx. 12.6 pages ), 10 sources, Click here to show/hide Paper Summary
Abstract
Kuroda Seiki (1866-1924) from Japan and Claude Monet (1840 -1926) from France are examples of artists who shared an urge for creative discovery. Both artists painted what are considered to be impressive and revolutionary paintings. In their paintings, they instilled new ways of representing reality through composition. This essay will examine Kuroda Seiki's "Withered Field (Grez)" and Claude Monet's "Waterloo Bridge, Grey Day" in order to show the similarity of their respective methods, a similarity that was radical in its time because it broke with the accepted methods of composition and attempted to reinvent the nature of artist experience and representation.

Monet, Claude: Houses of Parliament, London
Of Monet's and Pissarro 's experience of England during the Franco-German war, Pissarro was later to write, `Monet and I were very enthusiastic over the London landscapes'. However, they chose different aspects of it: Pissarro, what he described as `at that time a charming suburb' (Lower Norwood) and Monet, Hyde Park and Westminster. Monet's paintings of Hyde Park in 1871, though nothing more than stretches of grass and pathways with an indication of strolling figures are remarkably true to character though the principal product of his stay in London was the beautiful view of Westminster Bridge and the Houses of Parliament, dated 1871. The suggestion of color in the fog-laden sky is certainly Impressionist but the silhouette of the Parliament buildings does not suggest any debt to Turner , whose works the two French artists now saw. Monet observed and made use of the same flattening result of the heavy atmosphere as Whistler , whose Nocturnes belong to the same decade. The resemblance, fortuitous as it may be, is increased rather than otherwise by the evidently well-considered relation of the foreground timber pier and the buildings and bridge behind, a reminder that Monet like Whistler was an admirer of the Japanese prints in which these decorative relationships had a studied importance. Monet was to come nearer to Turner in the later more vividly chromatic paintings of the Thames at Westminster made on his later visits in the first decade of the twentieth century.

Bathing at La Grenouillère
1869 (150 Kb); Oil on white primed canvas, 73 x 92 cm (28 3/4 x 36 1/4 in) La Grenouillère (`The Froggery') was a restaurant and bathing place on a small branch of the Seine at Croissy. It was an extremely popular area because the Railway line from Paris to Saint-Germain, the first to be opened in France, had a station at nearby Chatou. Both Monet and Renoir painted several views of it in 1869 (Monet: La Grenouillère , Metropolitan Museum, New York; Renoir: La Grenouillère , Oskar Reinhardt Collection, Winterthur, Switzerland). Several successful academic painters had houses nearby, and the place was extensively written about, sometimes approvingly, sometimes not so, during the 1860s. It was thought of as a very `contemporary' subject, and its popularity was confirmed in the year that Monet and Renoir painted it, when it was visited by the Emperor Napoleon III and Eugénie, his wife. (detail, 210 Kb)
La Grenouillère was a riverside bathing and boating resort, popular among weekend trippers during the Second Empire (1852-1870) and after. It had a floating restaurant which is seen in another of the paintings executed by Monet during his two-month stay there in the late summer of 1869, and it appears in similar works by Renoir often painted sitting alongside Monet. The resort was situated on the Ile de Croissy, facing the left bank of the Seine.

Monet spent his childhood in Le Havre where his teacher Boudin encouraged him to paint in the open air. After military school service in Algeria, Monet met Sisley and Renoir in Gleyre’s studio. Initially influenced by the Barbizon school in the late 1860s Monet developed the Impressionist technique in views of Paris and in the 1870s in boating scenes at Argenteuil. Monet created series of the same scenes painted at different times of the day including ‘Gare St Lazare,’ ‘Haystacks,’ ‘Rouen Cathedral’ and the ‘Poplars,’ Monet’s last works were his famous murals of water lilies.
